N810 new features

The N810, with a price around US$479, has built-in maps and satellite navigation for getting directions, a high-resolution camera, instant messaging, and a 10-gigabyte memory card that stores up to 7,500 songs in compressed format. It's cool for the little device.

Re: N810 new features

BZZZZT! Wrong!

There is no 10GB memory card. There's a 2GB internal with an external slot that can take up to 8GB. The camera is not high resolution either (though apparently better than the N800's.

Re: N810 new features

I hope the camera chip is the same, so that, maybe, the improvement are all software side :)

Not to nitpick but the maps are for directions, the satellites are for the GPS. Is there really a "new" instant messaging feature? The 10Gb is not a single memory card but the combined total of the 2Gb internal memory and the 8Gb miniSD that you can put in the slot. Someday 32Gb miniSD cards will probably be available. Hopefully, as the format becomes more common the price goes down. SD used to be wayyyy more expensive than CF, but now it is pretty comparable.

Re: N810 new features

Last I checked SD had actually dropped down below CF for the same capacity.

PC Mag's first look says the IM is not "multi-platform", so I'm assuming its still just google (but that's what pidgen or meebo is for :) )

It's Jabber... which means Google Talk, Gizmo, LiveJournal and others... and with the right Jabber server, you get AIM/MSN/Yahoo/etc... as well which is what I do.

Re: N810 new features

Also, the 2GB of internal memory is mostly occupied by the map data.
There's likely only a few hundred meg free.

Yes, as zerojay says, it's not meebo or pidgen . . . it's Jabber transports. Using the built-in Jabber client is both fun and easy! Just find yourself a Jabber server that supports transports for the protocols you need, set it up on a computer (using something like Psi), then enter the account info into your IT and away you go. Works like a charm.

Re: N810 new features

Also, RTCOMM beta supports stuff like avatars and showing status messages in the contact list which Pidgin still can't do right. IT2008 should have RTCOMM final so... yeah.. it only gets better from here.

matt

I have a Nokia 770 and the only reason it isn't readable in sunlight is that Nokia 'forgot' to put an anti-glare screen in it, but fitted a mirror instead!!

If the 800 really sorted out the speed and memory problems, and the 810 can also be read outside, it might just be worth it.

Just my £0.02
A.

Which servers support AIM, Yahoo, and MSN transports?

And, hopefully, multiple AIM, Yahoo, and MSN accounts?

I almost think I ought to set up such a jabber server on my own machine(s).

I can also indicate that MANY of my clients have adopted Jabber and that it works well in an environment where users are oriented to instant messaging.

I Don't Work For Jabber...

I've seen wayfinder website and yes it's pretty confusing. I was at the imprmptuive show of thoughtfix last night and i can tell u that the routing comes for free, even waypoints. The voice and other live trafic report and goodies is what wayfinder want to charge for

I think you answered your own question :) There are open Jabber servers that have the transports (like jaim.at) , but in the end I set up my own and it works great. Check out Openfire:

http://www.igniterealtime.org/projec...fire/index.jsp

It's an excellent Jabber server. Adding the IM Gateway plugin is just one click in the Web admin and then you can set up your other accounts. It supports AIM, Gadugadu, Gtalk, ICQ, IRC, MSN, SIP, XMPP and Yahoo.

Once you have it set up and you have added your gateway registrations, your N800 will have access to every service via the default Contacts/IM/etc. Good stuff.

Re: N810 new features

To me the greatest new feature in the N810 is that transflective screen.. that picture from Thoughtfix says it all. I could have used Maemo Mapper much much more if the N800 had a screen like that. And I could have done some browsing and email reading in the park also on the days when it's not overcast.

Fully agree with this. I wasn't planning to upgrade to N810, but this makes me think... Hopfully my request to get discount code gets approved... :D

Mara, you are confusing me:confused:

I thought you were a Nokia employee??

You would not be able?

I think I fall into the grey area...

- I'm not on Nokia payroll
- I'm not contractor

Therefore I wasn't sure and the instrucions ask to apply in such case...

So then what is your relation to Nokia and how do you have access to all the fun stuff? :)

Re: N810 new features

Thoughtfix, or anyone else having actually held the N810 in their hands, could you say anything about the display's viewing angle? The N800 has a viewing angle I'm not used to from any LCD device I've owned, you can virtually watch it from nearly any angle. I always wondered if the price to pay for that was that it wasn't transflective..

The viewing angle on the N810 looks pretty much identical. At least I'm holding both of them in my hands, rotating them and I can't really tell any difference. So yes, it's also very good.

Can the map data be deleted if someone doesn't want to use GPS? Any estimation on how much storage might become free if the maps are deleted?

Can you say if the wifi driver is a bit more stable using kismet, if we can really do monitoring with it, and if we can make IV packet injection ?

Thanks

Yes, they can be downloaded / added / updated / removed one region at a time. No problems with that issue. The size of the map depends on the region. For instance Scandinavia is about 150 megs.

Can they be put on an external card instead of keeping them on the internal card?

The SW reads them from the internal card. So no.

johnkzin 2007-10-23 14:36

Re: N810 new features

Seems like it'd be a useful feature to have to tell the software to use the external card slot for reading maps (and complain if the card slot doesn't contain the data).

But, I'll probably move most of the data to an external card (instead of deleting it), and just keep my local area data on the internal card.
