What sucks the most in N800?
Okay I haven't had my unit for that long a time yet and all in all I love it, but there's one thing that is very wrong with the design. It's the zoom and full screen buttons. Suppose I browse the net in the dark. It's then impossible to see these buttons and they're so damn close to each other that it's really pure luck if I manage to hit say the full screen button instead of the minus button. Also, can't all the buttons be illuminated at dark all the time? It's almost impossible to "feel" them.. like say the home button or the one above it.. very easy to mix up in dark if you want to act fast.
But all in all I love this little gadget. Goes so well with my N95 :) edit. I see they've actually addressed this problem in the N810 |
Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Hum for me it's more the email client ...

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Yes, well that sucks too. Are the 3rd party ones any better?
|
Re: What sucks the most in N800?
No ... not mine ... (Pyne4Maemo). too slow and port unfinished.
Clawmail offline imap doesn't really work. :( |

I am quite jealous of all you people that have an N95... It's not so easy to come by in the states...At least not for a reasonable cost...

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Hmm.. I never look at those buttons anyway (they're on the top of the device after all), so using them in the dark or not doesn't make any difference to me. I occasionally press the wrong button, but it's not something I notice as problematic. I can feel them fine.
What's, for me, most problematic with the hardware is that it's so difficult to see the screen in daylight. For the software it's that the email client doesn't use the imap message-already-read flag. If it wasn't for that I would be perfectly fine with the built-in email app. Other than that.. not much. From a developer point of view it's a bit of a hassle to Hildonize the applications. I'm currently putting things on ice waiting for the updated Hildon in OS2008, but I can't stop feeling that Hildon could have been done in another, more transparent way for the GTK developer. |
Re: What sucks the most in N800?
No really intuitive way to put the thing in standby.

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Built-in Jabber Client is toooooo slow.
Using Pidgin is faster, but I hate that it is in the "taskbar". In the "Statusbar" would be cooler. Supporting Exchange Server would be cool, but IMAP4 is enough. |
Re: What sucks the most in N800?
I second the comment about not being able to read the screen in daylight (another thing fixed in the N810). To really take full advantage of the portability and features of the N800 I want to able to whip it out and use it while I am outside.

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Using it with a GPS unit in the car can really be bad in bright daylight.

The best offer here for really unlimited data is 1,5€ a day (same speed). That's 45 a month if you use the connection every day. Plus VAT. :( |

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
I have recently noticed that my battery life on my 3 week old 800 is sucking. I charge it until it reads Battery Full, then after an hour or so of radio use, it says I have about one hour left!
I bet I can discharge it fully a couple of times to restore... hopefully. |

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
- Viewing the screen in daylight, or even indoors near a light sourcce. It's near impossible. Hopefully this will be fixed in the N810. The Zaurus line has the best indoor/outdoor screen I've seen in a portable device. It's transflective screen cast no obstructive reflections even in direct sunlight, and the screen could achive a large brightness range. I hope the N810 can match it.
- The sound quality is very poor. I can hear constant white noise in the background. I know it's not a dedicated mp3 player, but it should have better sound quality. - Rhapsody program has many bugs. - Handwritting recognition is horrible, but I perfer to type anyway. - Opera and MicroB are slow and scrolling is a pain. I guess it is just the 330mhz 128mb ram combo talking there. - No PIM. It isn't advertised as a PDA but a PIM suite will not kill anyone at Nokia. - Screen is recessed, making it harder to clean. It would be much better if the screen was flush with the body. - Not fully open source. Binary blobs and closed source drivers make it harder for developers. The Angstrom project is working on a complete maemo replacement for the N800, but I guess they can only get so far because of the closed wifi, battery, etc, drivers. Maemo is pretty good, but alternatives would be nice. - Built in IM and email client leaves much to be desired. Gmail IMAP does not work, and I cannot connect to AIM using the jabber protocol. - The battery life fails to refresh sometimes, stating I have a full or near full battery remaining, when I actually have little/near empty. Pretty good device overall. Overall best portable i've had. |

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
The best with the Internet Tablet is the never ending strem of FOR FREE !! 3- party applications ....It is like Christmas every day. And that way the Nokia IT just getting better and better..
What sucks most is the need for find, reload and re-install every 3party apps after a OS upgrade. It takes a lot of effort to rebuild it to the state it had with applications before the upgrade. There schould be a easy way of backing up 3-patry apps |

Can't say I have huge fingers. The zooms are on both sides yeah.. it's just too bad there's no gap whatsoever and if it's completely dark and I can't see the thing it pretty much feels like one big button. |

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Is there any other reader that can be downloaded to the N800? I've tried to use the FBreader and I've showed it to a couple of my friends and I just can't get the books into the library; I've read the instructions but no luck; I just don't find it user friendly; so is there another reader that can be used with the N800? TIA

What format are you trying to use? I have the best luck with txt/rtf/html stuff. Be warned, it wont read any of the DRM garbage you get through most ebook stores. |
Re: What sucks the most in N800?
If you are in the dark and using vi, the Esc button is very hard to find even if you know where it is.

Re: What sucks the most in N800?
Commenting on a couple of issues mentioned:
- Large battery drain when listening on the radio. I assume this is the Internet radio, not the FM radio. Yes, streaming over wi-fi sucks battery, more than surfing or most other activities. And no, it won't help a bit to deep-discharge the battery a couple of times as was suggested, that will simply shorten the capacity and lifetime of the battery even more. The only remedy is to plug in the charger when listening to internet radio for more than an hour or two. - Slow scrolling in Opera and MicroB. For Opera the fix is to configure it to use the d-pad as page down/page up (there are instructions in several threads here), then it'll page as fast as you could wish for. No such easy fix for MicroB (not the last time I checked at least). |
