Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

That's right. Check it out :D

You know what would be awful? If I got exactly six entries.

Mine's coming homey. I've been trying to get a video camera off my friend for a week (web cam quality will kill it...) and it's been a pain. Also what with the Hollywood writer's strike, I unfortunately had to write all the dialogue myself.

Mine will also be up ;)

Patience though! I do have a number of questions.

Thanks for the warning. If you don't tell the other writers, I'll doctor it for half price.

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

Yabbas asked (and I am answering them here for fairness)

1) Can I submit more than one entry to maximise my chances?

One per person. Sorry!

2) I've got loads of ideas - most of the videos up now only demonstrate ONE feature of the ITTs - must I only show ONE feature in a video or can I demonstrate loads of different features?

Use your judgement.

3) Can ideas come from copyrighted sources (say for instance - can I replicate TV adverts for other devices but using the ITT instead...)

Like an Apple ad? That'd be funny. Stick with YouTube's TOS on copyrights and you'll be good.

4) Is comedy seen in a good or a bad light?

I love it. I'm not the only judge though.

5) Maximum length of a video entry?

Stay within YouTube's limit.

6) Can I include music/sound effects in mine?

Go right ahead. Impressing people will get votes.

Extra points for well-done satire, right? :D

Who would you pick for models?

I'd pick me, and me in drag. Both hot, both appeal to opposite ends of the spectrum. ;) (This is the most sarcastic thing I've ever said, print it and frame it) :) Still no camera, it's like pulling teeth.

Hedgecore: If you have no camera, you can still create a slideshow and and voice-dub it.

I had a digicam but that'd be crappy quality. So I bought a refurb JVC video camera for $150. :) (I'd use it anyway for taping bands, this was just a fun catalyst to part me & my money) :D

jdsemma 2007-11-08 01:22

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

I used a digicam for the few bits of actual video in mine. It outputs 320x240, not fantastic quality, but decent enough for youtube anyway. One of these days I'll get around to getting a real video camera, sure....

I'd totally stuff the chick in the first video...wow. Oh!...and I got dibs on the uhh....bubble wrap keychain....or do I want the work luck thing?....hmm....

*sigh*. Human females, as opposed to ficticious Klingon females, have rights, namely equal ones. This *usually* stops people from talkin about them like a delicious Thanksgiving turkey (which you can go ahead and cook yourself). I bet you'd 'stuff' Jenna Jamieson too (aside from the whole 'gooooood luck' factor).

Tofurkey's way better. Go veg.

hugs & kisses,
Hedgecore.

Just a figure of speech, don't want anyone to get butt hurt. However, my statement stands...I would definitely stick it to her...you know...tickle her fancy?.....perhaps, drill for the O word? (not oil)...

Honestly though, if someone actually took offense with any of that...get help. Quickly. I really don't like how it seems like everyone in the world has to walk on egg shells be cause of "rights"...what happened to free speech??

Oh, and no, Jenna is not my cup of tea.

OH...just as a side note...I'm not having sex until marriage...so it's literally a figure of speech.

I don't get offended, I can dish it out _and_ take it. :)

I'm also just not a fan of horse #*$&# mysoginist statements.

... and I'm also stopping now before Reggie closes this thread and ships me a springloaded boxing glove that knocks my teeth out when I open the box.

Cheers,
Hedge

I hear ya man, in all honesty, I'm really not like that either...I actually like treating women like they mean something.

lol @ boxing glove.

Hey just a thought. In order to avoid any possible impropriety, would it make sense to limit voting to those with a join date before the contest was posted?

(I could get like 50 people to sign up and vote for me.)

(If not, maybe I will.)

:)

Man, I'm either oblivious or naive, but I didn't even think of that...wow, that would suck.

Well. That Optimus Prime costume I did for halloween? There were some online contests I went into... and got smote horribly in. Seriously, when someone who did a paper bag with angry eyeballs drawn on in Sharpie beats Optimus F'n Prime, something's wrong. So that's fresh on my mind :)

uNtouched 2007-11-12 17:07

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

Yeah, I have a feeling that the whole "be original" thing will be over looked in this contest, so far all the entries with the exception of Jeff Grado (in my opinion) show the device for what it was made for, mobile browsing...we'll see how it turns out.

It must suck about that paper bag winning. I can only imagine how pissed you must have been.

Mine is on the way. Although it does'nt have any innovative ideas.... but it is not that bad either..

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

Untouched: Nah, I built it for two reasons. First, I don't get much of a chance to do DIY stuff, so any 'project' I can sink my teeth into I do with a strong sense of obsessive compulsive behaviour :) Secondly, I figured Transformers were popular and Halloween was coming up, maybe I could get rich off the ads on the site. I made just under fifty bucks. Awe. :/

All in all, it was a fun experience. That's why I blogged the step by step making-of. The only thing about the contests that sucked was people were cheating left and right. Win some, lose some. :)

(My entry's being uploaded as I type this... but it's 105MB so it might take a few days.) ;)

I had thought of that too. I can only assume that Dan had as well and it'll not be an issue.

I'll go ahead and say that I just joined b/c of the contest. I don't have a tablet already so really, why would I? :o

If something is done to limit the voting to those who joined before the contest was announced then I wouldn't be able to vote for my own video (which is coming soon) and, in my opinion, that's a little messed up. What about limiting it to those who joined before the finalists are announced?

Either way I don't think anyone wants this turning into a "I can coerce more people to sign up and vote for me" contest.

Hedgecore 2007-11-13 17:50

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

Well. Personally I'd say if you entered, regardless of when, you should be able to vote. :) Even if it was the contest itself that convinced you to sign up, all I've gotta say is.... welcome! :)

I'm in the same camp as ninjatuned there -- I've actually been browsing the forum for a few weeks prior to the contest being announced, but as I don't currently *have* a N-anything, I hadn't bothered joining (until after my contest entry anyway).

Phenomonal entries! Thoughtfix is up to 15 or 16 responses!

With like 5 entries squeaking in the 11th hour (literally!) I'm holding my own subcontest*! Film yourself freaking out and swearing at YouTube for processing your last minute video so slowly and I'll ship the best one a cheapo Canada shotglass from the tourist shops downdown.

* Not really. But upload it anyway with the tag "N810, Contest, Hurry, #$&*#$"

:D

They are jumping in out of the wood work now. Makes me feel like I wish I'd taken the risk and worked on my video a day or so longer. I've never fooled with a lot of this stuff though so I didn't want to be cursing the screen as it tumbled in retrograde motion through the air past my doorway.

I posted as Luudite by the by and I'd like to play devil's advocate for 1 second. If getting people to sign up to vote brings more traffic to the site and awareness to the tablet, that's good no?

I know, it's still poopy to do. What can I say though, I always liked those points in English class when the "Oh no you didn't just say..." came about.

Wow there are lots of really good entries. I wouldn't want to have to narrow it down to 5.

That's actually a good point I hadn't thought about. I guess it's a matter of whether the traffic sticks or not. Sure it increases with all the people voting but I'm not really sure how much new blood it would bring to the fold if they're just here b/c they're friends with the person they're voting for.

Anyway, it's not up to me. I just have to play by the rules like everybody else :D

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

My entry was one of those last day submissions.

I hadn't touched a camera nor iMovie in years. After lamenting last week if I should enter or not, I decided last weekend and ran out with the camera the past few days. Had some odd looks while videotaping and an unmarked car pull up on me. Weather was a bit tricky, couple iMovie crashes, depleted batteries, wet feet and a bunch of other snafus - haha.

Hadn't checked the new replies in the last week, while I was working on my little reply. Great entries out there. Nice job hedgecore, I like your entry.

I actually didn't realize we'll all get to vote. Thought it was just Dan and the other editors/contributors of the other sites.

Like hedgecore; I've seen a few of voting things online get pretty wild and ugly (where whole schools & families are jumping to vote for one submission that wasn't great at all objectively speaking) ... and it just became a matter of how many people can you rally together to hit submit. Hopefully Dan & Co have that in check ... so there won't be some type of voter 'fraud'.

Anyway. I had a lot of fun doing my little video.

Out of all the entries I could pick 5 favorites ... but a winner? That'd be a tough job.

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

Crap, I just typed out a page but it got lost :/

Thx for the kind words icerabbit. For about a day I thought I'd make the top five, now I just want to see how those that do fair. The response has been phenomenal and it really shows how strong this loose-knit community is. Not a single show of poor sportsmanship that I've seen, way to go everyone!

I don't envy the judges at all. I started looking through all the entries again and took different angles. Great editing is one thing, content is another, creativity, etc., all weigh in. Some seemed more "Why I want an N810" as opposed to the contest's "Show how you'd use it in every day life". Others were based on web site after website, and others came up with stuff I didn't even know they could do (I'm a 770 guy, never did get an N800). The heart-string tuggers (read: anything with a kid in it) made me think "aaawe. Do I *really* want it if it comes down to me & the kid?", hehehe. The one common theme though, was people like these things. I think there would've been a totally different crop of videos (pun intended!) if this had been for a 770 before the release. First, everyone would be using blocks of wood, hehehe. Second, it was pretty much a geek niche back then.

Regardless, I think we all got a prize out of seeing that we've got a kickass community here. We definately need to have more of these things, even if they're just for silly little prizes like Sushi USB keys. :)

Cheers,
Hedge.

Re: Contest update: All finalists get prizes!

I agree hedge. I suppose I can't say I don't want to win, but really it was just a lot of fun to clip the video together. Learned a lot of things, namely iMovie's limitations :/ Perhaps I'll be a video blogger yet. At any rate, if there was another run of movies, I'd do my best to add something to the mix :)

Also I've learned that muxed videos from a sony camera are aggrevating to the nth degree to work with.

in geekhood,
Matt

I've only had a chance to watch Hedgecore's (impressive!) entry thus far, but I'm looking forward to sitting down to watch all the submissions tonight after my kids are asleep. I'm eager to see how others are using their tablets.

As a side note, I derived some amusement out of the fact that I was posting my second YouTube video on the one year anniversary of losing my car in a flood at work--the subject of my first YouTube video.
