wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
Is there a program for the n800 that would give information as far as which particular wireless access point its connected to, and its relative strength? Trying to use my n800 at work to determine which of our 6 access points are down. Thanks for any help

Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
Nokia-N800-39:~# apt-cache search wifiinfo
wifiinfo - Shows current WLAN status Search for the right repository here: http://www.gronmayer.com/n800/repos/show_repos.php |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
can you expand on this? "Nokia-N800-39:~# apt-cache search wifiinfo" not sure what to do with that, i did a search from the link you provided for "wifi" and got nothing...sorry im pretty stupid

Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
click on the connection icon top right, click change connection then it will detect all wifis. or go to connection manager it works the same. :)

Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
I was looking for a program that shows a more accurate signal strength, and also information about the specific access point im connected to, not just connected to "soso" network.
WIFIINFO is great for showing the signal strength, but i think its showing the mac address of the access point. We cant seem to find an easy way to pinpoint the mac address to any specific access point. Ideally there would be a program that i could load, and then stand anywhere on our lot and see all the available access points and their relative strength. |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
You'll probably find the MAC address of the AP is on a sticker underneath it...
Failing that, as it appears to be more of a scanner you are after, try kismet. |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
If you are the administrator of the APs, then just log into them and view the interface to get the MAC address of each AP. Or if that isn't possible then use WiFiInfo and stand next to each AP to ensure you are connected to the nearest one, then make a note of the MAC address that WiFiInfo is reporting.
You'll need to make a note of the MAC addresses anyway for any of the scanner software to be of use, since they all report the MAC address. There is no other info in the Wi-Fi packets that would identify which particular AP signal you are seeing. Kismet is good, but unfortunately it is not working well on the N800... it stops picking up packets after a few minutes. But for the few minutes that it is working, it does the job. |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
You may want to install wireless-tools which includes iwconfig (it will be in /sbin/) which will tell you everything you wanted to know about your AP and more.
It is not auto-updating, so it won't tell you signal strength as you move around, but it will give you good info about the AP. You need to run it from an xterm. If you want to war-walk (search for wireless APs) then I would suggest you search the forum for Kismet and how to install it. It works very nicely on the N800 (again in the terminal). I hope this helps, Craig... |

awesome thanks for all the tips, now i get to play around with these tools all day tomorrow at work :)

Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
AutoScan might be of use to you. [download]
For a quick check on AP you can also in Xterm type: /sbin/ifconfig [PS - somebody above mentioned /sbin/iwconfig which is from Wireless Tools for Linux ] |

I installed AutoScan.1.01_Maemo.deb without a hitch - to the best of my recall - on July 30th. Does the 'i' or 'details' button give you any information as to what might be conflicting/missing when the 'uninstallable' dialogue box comes up? |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
I tryed install 770 vaerion from here.. Is it same?
http://autoscan-network.com/index.ph...d=12&Itemid=27 It didnt tell anything, just that sotware cant be installed after it downloaded it.. I dont have latest OS update, course havent had problems with memorycards, but version before that. |

My os2007 isn't the latest either I have as previously mentioned: 4.2007.26-8 It is a shame that there is no 'info/details' button for you to find out what might be conflicting/missing. There is no info in the Application Manager's Log either? I have attached a jpeg to give you an idea of what it looks like running on my n800 and whether its worth pursuing. [PS: I have not had occasion to use 'autoscan' much and so have not explored its full capabilities] |

Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
Just tried installing and running it over here on my N800, seems to work fine. Maybe you have a bad copy of the .deb file?
|
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
Yes. but I downloaded/tryed install it directly from those internet links.. It does download, tel that its not Nokia software, you still want install it and after it says that software cant be installed.

Perhaps, as 'zanglang' suggested, the autocan deb file you downloaded is bad. You could try getting a new copy and this time when it asks you 'to open or save', saving it first to make absolutely sure the entire deb file gets downloaded. Afterwards you can install from Application Manager's: Application "Install from file". If it still won't install you'll at least know that the problem wasn't a partially downloaded or corrupted 'autoscan' deb file. |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
I tryed that, no help. :(

Atleast I hope so.. |
Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
Installed fine on my N800 but I had to reboot before it could find the loopback interface (127.0.0.1).

Re: wireless utilities for n800? access point info?
Looks like a nice app, but I had the same problem. It installed ok, appeared in the Extras menu, and appeared to start and then nothing happened.
