New OS, New Look

Quote:

To celebrate the the launch of Internet Tablet OS 2008, we at Internet Tablet Talk have decided to refresh the look of the site and make it more current. We have added a new section called 'Tablet 101' where we plan to post OS 2008 video tutorials and walkthroughs, as well as try to gather other tutorials from other Internet Tablet related sites. We are hoping that new OS 2008 Internet Tablet users would find the new section helpful. The new look mimics the new OS, using the same default background (blue circles) and transparent menus. It highlights the new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet at the top, with its keyboard appearing at the bottom of the page. Most if not all of the icons on the main page are directly lifted from the OS. As tribute to the site's old look, a screen capture appears on the N810'd screen above the site. We would like to thank folks from Nokia who willingly provided us with OS 2008 icons and N810 images. Lastly, we have posted our very first video at Tablet 101 -- a 10-minute video walkthough (in HD) of the Nokia N810. We hope you enjoy it. New changes means new bugs. Please report any problem that you encounter. Thanks!

Great !!!

I like the new look ! Very beautifull !

A touch of dark, a touch of glasses, a touch of web 2.0, a great style !

EDIT : Where is the "new posts" button of the forum ?

Re: New OS, New Look

Looks great but some of the quick reply buttons may need to be retouched, the Remove text formatting, I, U, and blue A looks a bit odd hard to tell what they are...

EDIT:

We lost our Jabber icons/settings too :(

Whatever it was you did tonight reset my skin setting from "classic" to the default.. which was annoying. Had to go find that setting again so I could undo the mistake.

That's what I'm saying. It does not render for me properly at all: a giant N810 image blocks all the controls and nav buttons, and a floating advertisement takes the rest of the screen.

Re: New OS, New Look

On the desktop it looks fantastic!...

You can still change the view to "Classic" and have all the quick link features or one of the mobile views. Classic is much cleaner now BTW.

Good Job Reggie. :)

I'm with dingerx on this one, I can't login or view the recent posts or choose to go to the wiki/forum/downloads or anything with my N800 now.

Re: New OS, New Look

It works with MicroB but not with Opera. I can't really use MicroB on my N800. I find it very slow and very prone to crashing.

I think this link
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo....php?do=getnew
should work in all views for the new posts.

I like the new look a lot, it looks more modern, nice work :-)

One note: the "username" input box is a bit unreadable because of the dark gray font color.

They're not equivalent. "Todays Posts" lists all posts today, "New Posts" lists all posts since my last visit, and the latter has gone AWOL. :(

It will take some getting used to, but I dont like change.

I like it,I am just not used to looking at it yet. I thought the n800 was an ugly chud, but it grew on me, I am sure the new ITT will.

You can use the 'more' link below the Active Forum Topics on the main page, or use this link:

Sorry Reggie, but that kind of assumes I have the Main page bookmarked as my landing page, which it's not - I come direct to the forums, and from that point onwards my only option is to navigate to a menu and access an option that doesn't quite do what the old "New Posts" button did.

The new site has removed very useful functionality and the alternatives are either awkward to access or not direct replacements. I can now see how involved Nokia were in this re-design! ;)

I can use the link to get an initial list of new posts (in fact, that's what my current bookmark already provides) however it's not then possible to easily re-generate a new list of "new posts" without having to use my bookmark - I tend to read new posts each in their own tab, and having read all articles I like to refresh the New Posts list, which I can only now do with my bookmark (which is in a Firefox bookmark folder etc.).

I'm beginning to see parallels between the removal of the New Posts button and the Bluetooth status icon! :)

On the whole I'm liking the new design - it's certainly "fresher" - but see no valid reason to drop the "New Posts" button...

On a slow connection, I have to stare at a wierd extended-keyboard n810 for a while.

I like the new site so far, but I have only used it on my laptop.

And I really look forward to the 101 stuff.

Will it have 101s for apps as well?

You mean how much time I spent on it? Lets say I mostly had only about 4 hours of sleep every day for the past two weeks. :)

I'll add that to the list.

For the meantime, how about a super secret , always current, ajax enabled latest thread page? sshhh. ;)

Tablet 101

Let me get this right: ITT's new site does not work on a brand-new n800 right out of the box, but that's not really a problem, because there's a workaround?

Okay, I know such a statement is true for just about everything else for the n800, but come on! If there's one thing an internet tablet should be able to display without issues, it's a website dedicated to internet tablets.

It's enough to tempt me to write a snarky n800 review, beginning with:

Quote:

The n800 dazzles you with its technology and promise, until you find out that nothing works for it. It cannot even show the website of the "Internet Tablet Community," let alone thousands of others.
The new look is cool. I appreciate the thankless hours put into maintaining these forums, and agree that the perks y'all get are nothing compared to the effort you put in. But I'd say a minimum standard for this website is that it has to render properly on stock 770s and 800s, not just on some tablet that isn't even released yet.

Re: New OS, New Look

There will be a version of the theme for Internet Tablets and mobile devices. Hang in there.

Ooohhh... that's interesting! It might take a bit of getting used to, and I'm not sure I'll use it all the time - it's a bit of a cross between IRC and a forum! - but that's pretty neat! Careful it doesn't bring down your server! :)

Woahhhh....trippy. I miss the 770 up there, then again I'm weird the 770 has a special meaning to me, but I gotta admit, this looks dope. (good).

Re: New OS, New Look

If I had one request for the forums it would just be to limit the flash based ads to non-tablet devices. There is enough javascript, css, etc already that I always use the "classic" theme so a flash ad won't slow things down further. I know you can "disable" flash on the N series, but I do use it on other sites and prefer not to flip. I would imagine there is something in the user agent that could be keyed off of so that tablets are just given graphical adds.

You're right - when clicking the Search button the floating search dialog appears but it's missing the text input field, it only shows the two radio buttons and the link to Advanced Search (this is with Firefox 2.0.0.8 on XP SP2 - "Search" seems to display correctly with IE7).

On a slightly related issue, the floating menus are all displaced far to the right of the associated menu buton, this is particularly noticeable with the thread-specific buttons, in particular "Display Modes" (this problem affects both Firefox and IE7).

Re: New OS, New Look

The new look is great but get rid of the dark text and icons on the black background. It is very difficult to see even if I switch from the tablet to a computer with a 20 inch monitor. A little design tweaking and this site will look truly excellent.
