just bought n800 - want to return it
I received my n800 from Buy.com last night, and I am very disappointed. It could be that I'm too old, my eyes are not good enough, or I had unrealistic expectations. However, I just can't keep it. My eyes and head are killing me.
Anyway, does anyone know if there is a way I can return it? Yeah, I'll call Buy.com, but I want to make sure there is no better way to approach this. Any suggestions? Thanks. |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
Have you tried increasing the page size using the buttons on the top of the N800? Push the + to make it bigger and the - to make it smaller. Also, pressing the middle button will make the page full screen.
If you still feel you have to return it then sending it back to Buy.com or selling it here to someone may be an option. Hope this helps. |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
I've tried all of the options - including zoom, etc - and it just isn't what I wanted.
- the zoom increments stink - it is slow and seems to freeze up on me sometimes (not responsive or takes up to 5 seconds to respond to click) - it's a ton of work to make the page correct to read - there appears to be a strange shimmery effect that i can't describe that requires I adjust the angle i hold the unit as my eyes move across the screen. can't describe it. I'll try buy.com, although i can't imagine they're going to take it back just because I don't like it, which is really probably the case. I'm sure many people would love it. It just isn't going to work for me. If I can't get buy.com to take it back, I'll probably offer it up for sale here. I didn't take the screen protector off yet, and clearly I can't use it any more because of the headaches - so it's essentially brand new. oh well. |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
I don`t know if it is like that in other Countries but in Norway we got an 14 day windows of return without reason.. just need to fill out a paper that come with what you bought and send it back.

Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
After you zoom in on a webpage with the + button on top of the device, the text may flow off the screen. To avoid this, in the menu choose View / Fit width to view.
There are ways to increase the default browser font size too, this will avoid having to zoom in every time you open the web browser. With properly corrected vision you shouldn't have problems reading the N800, consider getting your eyes checked rather than returning the device. Edit: Your replies since the first one suggest that you have more issues than just readability. It seems that your best bet is to return it. |

You may, indeed, have a defective unit. My N800 is very responsive and works like a champ. Click and off I go. Multiple windows open, no problem.
I agree with 9a6or. It may be defective. |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
Um, I mean no offense, but you also might like trying to hold it closer to you. Out of habit (with a 320x320 Palm) I was always holding mine at arms length, which made it rather frustratingly small to read some times. Then I realised "Wait a minute! These guys are a cell phone company" They're used to tiny screens being close to your face. Try holding it 6-8" from your eyes. It's remarkably clear and easy to read. To get an idea of an appropriate distance, look at the video on the N800. (File Manager -> Video clips Nokia_N800.)
I'd play with it a bit more before sending it back. It's a remarkably capable browser for such a small form-factor. (Of course, if you don't need it and are sure you don't want it, start he ball rolling ASAP.) |

Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
Unfortunately, as we age, our cornea loses flexibility, and we begin to need to hold objects further away from us to be able to focus on them (Presbyopia). This means for some of us, holding it 6"-8" will not be an answer. GIJP may already be feeling these effects.
Also, the shimmering effect may be a sensitivity to the slightly different images each eye gets from the screen. This is caused by both glare effecting the image, but also from the inherently not quite perfect viewing angles of the screen. I found it disturbing at first, but I was able to get over it. On my Toshiba M200 tablet, it was such an issue that I never got over it and had to stop using the tablet. My experience with other M200 owners showed me that there is a very dramatic range in sensitivty to this issue, with some people not noticing it, and others, like myself, being severely impacted. Then again, the responsiveness issue does sound like a hardware problem with the N800. |

Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
I can empathise here, I am very susceptible to display screen vagaries. I once had a tv set that gave me a blinding headache after 10 minutes, nobody else was affected including the friend that I gave the set to. Also I have had similar problems with certain monitors, laptop screens and so on. I need to be very careful as to what I buy but I still can’t define exactly what it is that produces the eye strain.
My only such issue with the N800 is with late night use in a dark room, e.g. bedtime reading. Even with the brightness turned right down it hurts my eyes after a while. Otherwise it is perfectly fine and I have used it for hours on end watching videos. I have seen very wide differences in quality of N800 displays and it seems to me that you might have a bad one, especially judging by the shimmery effect you describe. Generally speaking the N800 display is superlative so it should not give you this discomfort; if it was an intrinsic characteristic then others – including me – would have reported similar experiences. IMHO The best option is to return yours and get a replacement, there is every possibility the new one will be better. |

Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
I don't know if this makes sense, but would an anti-glare screen help?
http://www.boxwave.com/products/clea...-n800_2569.htm It has made the screen much more readable for me, before there was a lot of glare. If you do try this use scotch tape to lift the lint off of both the screen and the screen protector in addition to their instructions. |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
Thanks for all of the responses.
First of all, yes - I don't have 20/20 vision. I'm 34 years old and have been wearing glasses since I was 3 years old. I do go to the eye doctor every year, however, and I have been recently. My rx is good. Anyway, it probably is just old age - mostly. I have my Buy.com return merchandise auth #, and I plan on losing $32 re-stocking fee (15%) + shipping. Damn. I bought 2 SD cards and a boxwave screen protector for this thing. I haven't received the boxwave yet so I left the factory one on. Someone mentioned having a hard time reading this at night. Coincindentally, This is why I bought it. I currently use a Dell Axim X5 almost every night if I can't sleep, or while I'm falling asleep. The lowest setting on the n800 is certainly the most eye-straining and has the most "shimmery" viewing angle problem. However, the overall zooming and setting for each website is not for me. To each his/her own. |

Then, the sooner you return it the better.

Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
I have terrible vision, but it is excellent closeup if I remove my glasses. So it works better than well for me, but I can understand that people with different vision problems could find it unusable.
Zooming is overhyped as a solution. If you zoom, you have to scroll to the side to read many things. |

I know if I hadn't found this forum I would have pro'ly bounced mine back at the retailer who sold me mine too.
Sorry to hear that dude ( < O/P ). Somewhere on this board is simple way to edit Opera's default font size. (If I find the thread later I will post it. ) It's not laid out so concisely for MicroB I found in my searches... I often thought it should be one of the first things a new user would want to do and could be made a lot easier. :) |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
I'm sorry to hear about the OP's issues.
I'm a senior citizen with macular degeneration in one eye and weak vision in the other. I've had no problems using the N800 (yet). But, each to their own, and I wish OP best and hope the return to buy.com occurs w/o problems! |
Re: just bought n800 - want to return it
Dude, 34 is not old. I'm 37 with myopia, astigmatism and keratoconus, and don't have any problems using the tablet, even at night without visual correction.
Shimmering and headaches? I gather you've let other people look at the screen, and they don't have any problem? Otherwise, it could very well be a faulty backlight. Anyway, return it, eat the loss. |

Definitely see if anyone else claims problems with the screen, it might help you return it if others find it "shimmers" and you talk to a CSR who might cut your 15%. |
