N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Hi all, I just stepped up from my 770 this week and bought an 800 and I love it. Definitely a much snappier OS and form factor.

2 glitches though.

Firstly, the charge indicator seems to continually show "charging". Even over night.

Secondly, the second day I charged it all day, used it for an hour and switched it off for the night (with full power). When turned it on the next morning it had one bar left???

Ant ideas? Is this a battery or charger issue. I don't want to exchange it unnecessarily but this behavior worries me.

Hey jnack95, thanks for the feedback. Does your charger stay on "charging" all night? Shouldn't it move to "Charged"

Also when it drained over night, the tablet was OFF. So could a 3rd party app be running while off? Plus I haven't installed anything yet, as Iam waiting for os2008.

Thanks.

Also the 800 is just sitting in standby mode and has been since late last night, and it has drained by half. Definitely something at play here...

You may want to fire up an xterminal and run top. See if something is running _alot_. Some of us have noticed a run away 'sh' which will eat your batteries.

If you are handy with Linux/Unix, I have compiled a real ps which will tell the parent process (something the built in, busybox, ps won't do). You can find it at:
http://www.makikiweb.com/n800/downlo....2.7.armel.deb

I hope this helps,

Craig...

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

No...it should say "battery full" at some point. I would reflash the device and if you still have problems, return it as it is most likely defective (or at least the battery is).

T
hanks for the suggestions... I am still really a Noob with linux so I not really up to speed advance problem solving (windows no prob) so Iam not familiar with xterminal.

I will do a little more research and reflash and see if that helps. Is there a tutorial on how to reflash on ITT? I'll poke around and see. Cheers.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

The battery drain issue is related to your wifi router.

You need to install osso-statusbar as an application. It allows you to monitor the processor activity of the unit. Install the statusbar, and then watch your CPU usage on and off wifi. If you connect to your router, and your CPU usage spikes, you have incompatible router settings.

Perhaps you could go into more detail about "incompatible router settings" I certainly have never seen that (and I have 3 wireless routers).

thanks,

Craig...

Agreed, I see how it might be possible, what would you think would cause the incompatibility? I can tell you that the 770 never had an issue with my wifi.

Also as an update...I didn't reflash the unit, but restored factory settings check to make sure nothing was running in the background, but it still drained over night (whilst it was on, but idle). This screams of defective battery and or charger....

I think I am going to send it back for another.

Flashing is a totally indispensible thing to know about, so you should reflash anyway.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

If your 770 battery is still good, why not try popping that one in? (They use the same batteries don't they?) See if it exhibits the same behaviour.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Just so you are aware, I came across this thread while having similar charging problems.. the N800 continues 'charging' for hours, and this is the same if I use my N770 battery in the N800.

So far today its been charging for 4 hours or so, while my E61 charge completed in its typical 2 hours..

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Same problem for me with my n800 and os2008. If I put the battery on my n770, the charging is quick. After the charging in the n770, the battery is put in the n800 and is fully charged. So it's not a problem with the battery but with the os2008.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

I think some daemon or background process gets stuck somewhere and puts the CPU at work thus draining the battery down.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Hi all, first post : be kind ;-)

Okay, my 2p... I had similar problems with battery life. Sporadic. Some days it was okay, some days it was dead by morning when it quoted there being hours left in the evening. I updated to the 2008 final (after using the Beta for a few days), and at the same time I removed the metalayer-crawler daemon as suggested in other threads (changed the name to "metalayer-crawler.disabled" and killed it in the process toolbar.) I have now got the device to last 3 days with maybe 2 hours a day surfing. I had "4 hours" left, but rebooted (to show a work colleage) and it went down to 2. The first time the battery gague had gone down since upgrading! Just recharged it in 2 hours back to full charge.

The side effect - the media player insists I have files that don't actually exist in my library - hmmmm... and can't seem to remove them (as in deleted already, but library is not updating.) Not a big deal. I guess I could run the metalayer-crawler once every time I add new files - at least then it is a known quantity!

Hope that helps someone ;-)

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Ok - the other thing I do... I always go in to "offline" mode when I'm not using wifi and I always "lock screen and keys" when not in use. Without removing the metalayer-crawler, this did extend the life slightly, but now having removed it, things are a lot better.

:D N800 is possibly the best purchase I made this year! (lucky I got it in there before January!) Nothing else, since my iPod video in 2006, has made such a big impression. I'm extatic with it at the moment! :)

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Just to let you all know, this bug (random battery drainage overnight) is known problem for Nokia developers. They do not know yet what is the exact mechanism how/why his happens.

So, if you have seen this, and if you have an idea why that might have happened, please post your findings/ideas to bugzilla.

I do not remember if there is a bug open for this yet? I'll check and post back.

EDIT: I did not find open bug for this? If nobody posts back I'll file a new bug soon.

EDIT2: Bug #2602 opened:

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

My n800 drains overnight without being on also since upgrading to the latest OS. It also goes through endless reboots while being charged. This happens whether it is on or off. It didn't do this for a while after I flashed with the new 2008 OS. Then after a couple hours of charging it started the rebooting cycles.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

I just upgraded to OS2008. I didn't notice any difference in term of battery life (yet..), but I did notice that instead of the usual 2 hrs. charging to get the 'battery full', now no matter how long I left the charger on, it would say only "charging".

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Same problem here. Even when the N800 is off, the battery goes of.
This happens after upgrading to OS2008.

I noticed that this is tha case if I do the following:

1. If I turn of the N800 when it is not pluged in, no problem.

2. If I turn off the N800 when it is pluged in, and then plug it off, the battery goes off over night. I have the feeling that this is the problem.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

I am seeing a problem with the battery as well. I recharged over night. In the morning, it did say that it was full. I went the day with little/no use. This morning, the battery was down a bar with 3 hours left. Under 2007, it would take me 3 days of normal use to get to that point.

Could someone point me to the information about incompatible wifi settings? I had recently installed a new router because my old one was locking up 2/3 times a night.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

Heres an update to my previous post saying that my n800 was going through endless reboots while recharging. I left the IT without the battery in it overnight because I figured at least I could keep the IT from draining the battery over night. Well, the next day I was able to leave it charging and it had stopped rebooting while being charged. So, I wonder what the link is there. I didn't do anything else that might have caused that change.

Re: N800 Battery drained while off (overnight) and other charge issue.

I tried Neil's suggestion last night -- just took the battery out for a minute and put it back in instead of the whole night though -- and now my unit displays 'battery full' again :D
