I'm going to try running jvm in gvm. :)
Perhaps this will finally yield an easy way to get Java stuff on the N800...
If anyone knows anything about getting java apps to run on palms, I'd welcome hints as to what would be good test programs. (And where to download them.)

My main reason for downloading this is that I have seen an HP48/49/50 emulator for palm, but apparently no-one has a maemo-ified linux one yet. Being lazy, and not yet skilled enough to try such a thing myself, I was hoping this would get me going. (Without scaling, though, the calculator keys in a palm 48 emulator are probably too tiny for use :( )

Jvm on palm sucks a lot. It's an outdated vm not really well working vm.

Yes, but then I would have to remember alphabetic keymapping for all keys on the calculator. The HP49 has enough keys for a full alphabetic keyboard, but the alpha bindings are secondary. If I were going to memorize them, I'd probably just use my BT keyboard.
However, I just looked it up, and the version I remembered was for 320x320.
There's also a version for 320x480, which should be less cramped. Stylus-only, but should be usable.

I know nothing about the Palm OS and which devices are compatible with which OS versions. For the purposes of using Garnet on a N800 and downloading software from a pay site, what would be the appropriate "compatible device" when prompted at Handango, or other relevant site?

I got the power48 HP48/49/50 emulator installed -- and it doesn't work. Worst part is, I have no clue if it's some Palmish thing I'm doing wrong, or if it just catches a shortcoming in the VM.

Well, the options shown on the compatibility settings in gvm are:

• Default
• Treo 650
• Tungsten T3
• Tungsten T5
• Tungsten T|X
• Custom

So that Treo and those Tungstens, at least. Which one? I've no clue.
Someone who knows Palms might be able to tell you which of those is most widely compatible.

Of all these, the Palm TX is the model with the most cpu/ram/etc.

I tried the calculator software when I still owned a palm (TX), but if I remember correctly, it is only an emulator. You still need a rom -or something like that- from the actual calculator, so it was useless to me.

Rom is given with the emulator.

The authors get the right to provide rom with his emulator from hp.

Can't get it to work. It wants a name or ip address and I really don't know what works.

Run the vm
click on the app you want to run
click on configure
then click on custom for device
now find the device ID and Company ID on the link above.

And you can pretty much run any software from the looks of that custom selection.

If I remember correctly, on the first run of the hotsync software, you have to name your palm device so it can create the profile and backup files. So you should be able to put any name in and that will be the name of your "palm", as far as the software is concerned.

you have to sign up for a (free) account in order to download apps, but the forums there are really helpful, especially if you have never used the palm os before.

WRT the calculator ROMs, HP's gone back and forth on that.

• First, the ROMs were copyrighted, and HP would not license them for distribution. So you had to dump the ROM from your HP calculator (legal, under fair use), and use that.
• Then, HP slackened up and licensed them for free distribution for non-profit use. At that point, most emulators, including power48, distributed them with the emulator.
• Finally, HP revoked distribution with emulators, but permitted free download from HP, and also from other sites. Just not packaged with the emulator.

So I got the emulator from HPcalc.org. And I also got the ROM image for the HP49 in a separate package from HPcalc.org. And, because I wasn't sure what I was doing, I tried starting power48 with no ROM, then again after I loaded the ROM, to make sure that it was seeing the ROM. It failed in different ways, so putting the ROM on did have some effect.
So for now, I give up. I'm too busy, and tinkering with my N800 wastes too much of my time without an HP emulator.
Still can't wait for ITOS 2008, but I'd better get some work done so I have time for that.:)

Actually, the T5 used a 416 MHz Xscale processor, faster than the TX's 312 MHz CPU. The T5 also bested the TX in memory, 256 MB to 128 MB. The TX just finally integrated WiFi.

Yes, Free42 is great. I've used it a bit and the interface and implementation work great. Free42 is also well respected by HP 42 owners (though this implementation has a different layout from the actual calculator (it looks more like a 15c)

Well, I can tell you I've installed in Garnet VM the same version of Power48 I've used on my Palm T5 for years along with the same HP48GX ROM, and in Garnet VM it just doesn't work. So it look as though they're missing something in their T5 emulation.

It appears I'll be carrying my real HP48GX in my briefcase a bit longer.

You bet! I've been using it, but I never had a 42. I had 48/49 of various flavors, so I'd like to get something more like that. Also, the 49s have a good CAS, which I'd like to have.
Still, Free42 is a good solid RPN calculator for calculations, so it's been quite handy.

I guess I may wind up buying an HP50, then. My 49G+ got a broken LCD this past month, and I was hoping to replace it with N800 software.

Maybe the ROM need to be converted, that's what you have to do with Emu48.

That's a good suggestion.

Power48 is based upon Emu48, so it does indeed require that an HP-provided ROM image be converted into a suitable format prior to use. Unfortunately, I did use the Windows-based tool that comes with Power48 to convert the ROM image. Power48 + the converted ROM work on a true T5, but crash in Garnet VM.

Yep. And the T3 has 12MB heap memory, the TX only 4MB as far as I know. The T3 could run certain memory-intensive programs that the TX couldn't. Er, and the T3 had a 400MHz Xscale processor. As sjgadsby says, integrated WiFi is what the TX gave us.
