New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix
Posted on 2007-11-14 01:55:12 EET.

A new version of the Internet Tablet OS 2007 Hacker Edition for the Nokia 770 is now available for download. There are two improvements in this released compared to the previous one:

The Mozilla browser engine developed by Nokia is now available in addition to the Opera engine.
A critical bug causing memory corruption under certain wlan conditions has been fixed.
Both improvements carry a remarkable degree of user contributions, big thank you!

The development to bring the Hacker Edition to Chinook levels is ongoing. It's not being easy to make the OS2008 fit in the 770 hardware. We are keeping the plan to offer you a new HE release though, hopefully before the end of the year.

Remember: the OS2007 Hacker Edition is not an end-user ready release and it is not officially supported by Nokia.

Wow, I've been dreaming about this!
But you're saying it's craching often? With or without Seatbelt?
I think it's time for me to learn about the whole dualboot thing.

Is the memory bug fix in the kernel image, or the rootfs image?

(edit: removed question about microb, I had installed the previous HE07 by accident.)

Microb is installed as standard browser in this image.

I've tested the image.
But after surfing for a short time the browser crashed and now i'm back on 2006

I am running it now. I can't change my regional settings. Can anyone confirm this? I get prompted with "all applications will close and device will restart" and then I get an error message about "device storage memory full. remove data to free memory." Can anyone else test this out?

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

I've been using the previous version of os2007HE with very good results and stability (for me at least), so I think I'll wait before upgrading to this version.

It has always been my understanding that the 770 hardware has always been too weak/slow to stream youtube video (I use uktube), so I don't get why people are disapointed when they still can't do it after an upgrade.

or has someone done this successfully with os2006?

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

Is the default really using the Mozilla engine? I checked the User Agent for the browser against a couple of web sites and it identified itself as Opera...

Going to http://grammer.net/mobile/

The browser is ID'ed as:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MISE 6.0; Linux armv5tejl; U) Opera 8.02 [en_US] Tablet browser 0.0.14 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8

Only a couple of little drop outs/no internet connection warnings but a relaunch of the browser took care of it.

BTW, how does one toggle between the two browser engines?

Thanks for your efforts to keep the old 770 going,

Dave

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

Wow, this is a great release!

Installation went smoothly. Microb uses the gecko engine by default (checked the browser headers on a browser sniffer site). I installed seatbelt immediately (along with X Terminal and becomeroot) and ran seatbelt by hand from /etc/init.d to avoid having to reboot. So far, I haven't had a single browser crash (or OS crash for that matter).

All Google apps work perfectly: Gmail, Google maps, Google Documents (only tried the wordprocessor), Google calendar.

It's amazing to see the progress this little piece of hardware is making. It has now finally achieved the level of usefulness and stability I had hoped for when I bought it!

Just a question for Fanoush if he reads this - will there be a multiblock writes version of this kernel with the corruption bugfix?

The browser runs a little slower, and much to my chagrin, there is no input.ini so I can change the directional pad options. Other than that, I'm glad there is progress on this project.

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

MicroB is slow, but Opera seems a bit faster - maybe that is just because you do get some feedback when loading pages (Loading...).

BrowserHawk.com identifies the browsers as Opera 8.02 and FireFox 3.0a1.

BrowserHawk detailed info (more link) either blows up (poof! gone) or renders slowly and badly in MicroB. It behaves well for Opera.

I thought that FireFox 3.0 was not due out for some time?

MicroB is so slow on some pages that I thought my Tablet had frozen, so frozen that it would not turn off. I was just about to pop the battery when it came back to life.

There does not seem to be any Flash in this release at all.

MicroB is a bit better than before, but I don't think it is too useable yet.

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

I have been trying the new os2007 HE on my 770, and I've found that it quite often becomes completely unresponsive, for about a minute, which leads programs to crash, and eventually, it will just reset itself. I'll go back to the previous HE, I guess, as I don't know how to do any intelligent debugging for this type of thing.

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

Internettablettalk is unusable with this version. I have tried both MicroB and Opera (with/without Flash 9) and it just pegs the cpu for minutes at a time.

I don't think I have had a real crash yet, but it is so slow at times that you can't tell the difference.

I wish that Nokia would fix the memory corruption bug in a patch release of OS2006.

If Fanoush is reading this, is there any possibility that you will be able to retrofit the memory corruption bug fix from OS2007HE into the standard OS2006?

The following works for me.

Open browser and select menu.
Select “Set Engine” and select whichever you want.
Close browser and re-open.

I flashed yesterday, works well here. It is slower than OS2006 on the MMC, I dont know how much faster it would be if I loaded onto the MMC instead.

I've had no major problems, installed MicroB flash. Youtube etc do not run but it's not the end of the world.

You can still use same kernel as before. The fix is in dynamic kernel module loaded from initfs, kernel itself is unchanged. It is stil the same old one from 2006 firmware.

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

Finally getting it to work. I think microb uses more memory, and it appears to be slower than opera. I flashed with fanoush's kernel image to increase speed of the mmc, switched on 64MB swap, increased browser's memory cache, now the microb is very usable (on par with opera on OS2006). I also installed seatbelt, but it swapped a bit too much so I changed the swappiness to 60 instead of 100. Everything is working well now, evince is way faster. I'm seriously considering replacing my OS2006 on mmc with this one.

Hmmmm...can't seem to find that menu option at all when running the browser. Any consensus which engine is better in terms of speed/responsiveness/stability?

I'm having the exact same issue with my N770 and the newest OS2007HE. Checking the "Memory" control panel item show there's no installed internal memory. Which would be impossible. It does however display that there are apps and whatnot installed so obviously it's working.

Edit:
Oh just fecking great, the WSOD. I barely had the thing for a day and this. Thankfully it's still under warranty. I hope getting it replaced/repaired doesn't a long time.

On a separate matter, has anyone tried sending Twitter updates from the browser?

I can fill in the post OK but hitting update does zilch!

It sends from Chat OK tho'.

Solved! There was a post explaining how one could use about: to check which engine was active, and now when using MicroB my Twitter update problem no longer exists! :)

The topmost menu is always highlighted in the sub-menus so it doesn't toggle depending on which engine is active.

You could try surfing to browserhawk.com as mentioned above.

Also if the site you're viewing has an RSS feed then the RSS icon will pop up on the address bar if you are using the MicroB browser.

Probably the best way to tell which engine is running is the fact that MicroB browser is noticeably slower than the Opera browser ;).

Thanks Fionn

I found a post about using 'about:' and that did the trick ;-)

Surprisingly MicroB fixed my Twitter problem! I had been trying to set the engine to Opera but it must have been there all along causing my twitter problem.

Can't remember any problems with Opera on 2006..

Question on the new hacker edition:

What's with the /etc2, /var2, and /var3 directories?
They seem unnecessary but I'm not feeling brave enough to nuke them. :)

I have a Sony Ericsson W810i (TMobile (US) and TZones) that I used to be able to connect to the internet with the previous hacker edition (using wap and HTTP proxy settings), however with the new hacker edition release I can no longer get onto the internet. It connects and sends and receives about 1K in each direction and then just stops - has anyone else seen this problem with the new hacker edition?

One other thing, when I connect to the BBC radio using either the IRadio applet or the media player I have issues. With the IRadio applet the screen does not dim and turn off and when I try to use the brightness control it pretty much freezes up. With the media player it plays great until the screen dims and then the music shuts off. Anyway around these problems in the latest hacker edition?

Yes, you can nuke them. There should be new fixed version already (with no announcement).

At same place as other ones, maybe this is old news and you already have it. maemo.org is down for me now but the last HE announcement mentioned some version and later new one appeared silently. If you grabbed it recently and took the latest one you already have it. difference should be no /var2 /var3 and newer initfs part from latest OS2006 image. I'm not sure about fixing that 'cannot change regional settings' bug.

Re: New OS2007 HE for the Nokia 770 with Mozilla engine and memory corruption bugfix

The HE is GARBAGE.
They say that is BETA,but, so crappy and buggy, that´s Alpha (or minor) :
1 my device rebbot a LOT
2 I loose ALL configuration -after a reboot- RSS BROWSER RADIO
3 the microb "browser" is slow, buggy, and get more than 90% of the processor

Again : I cant believe that a lot of time was spend to give this kind of CRAP

There's a post in the troubleshooting forum that tells you how. You just need to edit (as root) the locale file in /etc/osso-af-init Just replace the GB language designation with the language of your choice, US for US English as an example. Save the changes and reboot the 770 and the language will be changed. Worked perfectly for me.

Anyone notice there is a newer version of the HE out than the one released on Nov. 14?

The one released on 11/14 was SU-18_2007HACKER_4.2007.45-1_PR_F5_MR0_ARM
