How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Edit as of Nov.26:
Nokia has just released an OFFICIAL beta OS2008 for N800. For download links and instructions, see the news here. The procedure that is detailed in this thread is no longer needed. Pre-Nov.26 ---------- For those who weren't following the thread about the OS2008 release date, there has been a surprising development. There is an OS2008 firmware file available... intended for the new N810, not the N800... but some smart folks here have figured out how to install it on your N800 right now, without having to wait for Nokia's official N800 release (apparently delayed to mid-December). This is probably not the exact version that will be released by Nokia for the N800, but if you are adventurous and impatient you can be running OS2008 on your N800 today! Others have done it, with success. If you are not already a bit of a hacker or are not in a rush, then you should probably just wait a little longer for the official release. Proceed at your own risk! A firmware upgrade gone bad could brick your N800! Also, as with any firmware upgrade, your settings will be lost. Back up any data or settings that you want to restore. |

Thanks, works like a charm :)

Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
MAC address has been removed ...
No one else can post the number can they? Someone must have a record of it. |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Thoughtfix has pulled the dmesg log from his site, which contained the MAC address that was being used to enter Nokia's firmware download site. He is (understandably) pretty steamed about it, as he is afraid this may damage his relationship with Nokia. N810 mac addresses can widely be seen in pictures of the device online, so it is a bit annoying that the CNET article chose to reference one accidentally posted (as part of a log posted to satisfy *nix gurus about the N810 hardware) by a prominent and well respected community member.

Pretty funny, and it helps Nokia rather than hurts. I'll wait till the actual release, though...
|
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
I can't put a serial number in my blog post (hosted on cnet's blog network) for legal reasons. However, I've updated the blog post to point to the engadget photo.
Thanks for the link. |

Hey genome4hire, thanks for providing a great set of instructions and links in your CNet blog post!

Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Well In theory these kind of betas could hurt nokia. Someone could do damage to their tablet, or the software itself could be unfinished. I bet Nokia doesn't want ppl to use unfinished stuff. Good reputation to the tablet if it crashes. How likely Joe Average is gonna buy the NIT if he sees it crash?
But then again ... most nokia phones are some sort of betas anyhow, so what the big deal. The new OS works like a charm :) |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
From the eyes of a new N800 owner this is the reason why "open source" and communities like this are so valuable. I suspect Nokia is dancing in the office after reading your very positive preliminary reviews of OS2008. This tells them that the N810 users should be very happy with their new IT. I will wait for the official release because I don't have your linux skills and having a working Skype is important to me (among many reasons).
What is important is knowing that this community and Nokia aren't leaving the N800 users behind. Thank you for a great and entertaining evening last night. Just watching you work and share was a lesson in what the "open source" community is all about. |

Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Since this post is full of dupes from the other huge thread that no one will have the time to look trought to find the right info, I might as well post my info here too.
How to get a valid mac adress to put for the validation. Pick a random number between 126409750144 and 126409842879. (those numbers are in decimal, not hexadecimal). Then google for "convert <number_you_picked> to hexadecimal" without the quotes.Take the hexadecimal result (it will say 0x<some_string> use the <some_string> part) and use it for the validation. edit: you have to add two zeroes to the beginning of it too, see post below. It looks like N810 mac adresses are all in this range, so if you pick a number from here it will work, but the number won't be from anyones specific device, so no one should get in trouble. Took about 5 minutes to find this range trought some trial and error, maybe they should consider getting a more secure validation system :P |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Also you have to add two zeros (that is 00) to the beginning of the number you get from google to get it to be the correct lengt.

Linux for Windows
For Windows users, I found a few Linux distros that say they run from inside Windows. That means you can avoid creating and booting a LiveCD or having to partition your drive for a full install.
I haven't tried any of these, they are FYI only.If you successfully use something like this to flash your N800, please let us know. |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
I kind of suspect that the Maemo folks are not so happy about this leakage.
I for one start feeling sorry for downloading the firmware (I used a different method than looking for a MAC address) ahead of time. I don't know what legal issues there may be inside Nokia, but if they delayed the update for the N800 to December there MUST be a reason (either "logical" or "commercial"). And we all went against this. This is a statement for a fact. I don't feel sorry for Nokia by itself, I feel sorry for the Maemo team and I hope this leakage doesn't hurt the relationship they are building with the open source community (us) and, more important, I hope it doesn't hurt the "view" that a huge commercial company like Nokia has about the open source (and that brought us this mostly open-sourced device). But, indeed, they should be already prepared for this things to happen, but I still feel some kind of "sorryness" and I can't stop it. And yes, I am still running the OS2008 on my N800. Waiting for a reaction from the Maemo team, I haven't seen anything yet. |

and yeah feel sorry about the MAC-part. |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
I for one, i can wait until this "hack" is accepted as "not hurting" maemo/nokia ...
Though can not guarantee for my fingers to stay put ... and google a valid MAC :) |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
i heard that skype wont install in it.
also there are some dependencies problems with python. The map program rocks. gizmo works. |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
One issue with using the wayfinder map program on the N800 is that there isn't enough storage to download any maps over about 100MB in size as it uses the internal memory. And I can't see anyway to tell it to use any other storage. Unless knows a way to clone OS2008 to an SD card I suppose?

Heh, my problem is that it "installed" itsself onto my 128MB card in the internal slot, my external slot is a 8GB SDHC.
I removed the 128MB and moved the 8GB into place and now It seems to be downloading the UK maps fine. Thanks for the help:) |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Wow, I am gobsmacked by all of this. And just when I thought the forum was becoming boring.
I am all set to go now, I have the flasher and the .bin just need to investigate live Linux cd's - I use Vista (spit). |

In any case, they could and would have used better methods if they would have had to protect their firmware - requiring a device ID will probably be done to prevent clueless users from sueing for damages after they toast their device with unsuitable firmware, and to gather statistical data on the number of actively maintained devices. Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
First, ThoughtFix: stop whining. Yes, you'll see that the tech websites that do reviews will blur over or otherwise obfuscate serial numbers, and you probably should have done so, as should every other site that had that information out there. But, no, this is not a super-secure "product-activation" scheme that you broke.
As for the rest of you: you were told 2008 was not available for the n800. You were required to give an 810 serial number to download it. You installed it using third-party tools. So you willfully represented yourselves as n810 owners to Nokia when downloading the software, and did everything possible so that Nokia could deny responsibility and refuse support if something bad happened. This is not a "beta" of the n800 version. Nokia would be required to support that. So I say, "cool! Let me know what you find out!" If you break something, you're SOL. From the Nokia perspective, this is the best of both worlds: they get beta feedback if they want it, without support issues. As for why there's a delay, my guess would be less along the lines of "give the N180 time to shine" than "because the same QA people are doing V&V on both machines". |

Hmm.. nah I wait for the official release. There's nothing wrong with Os 2007 as it is :)

Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
Plus there is no EULA on the http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N810.php page so it "void" in the same was as a EULA on the inside of a shrink rapped box is "void".... ;)

Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
first garnet vm, now os2008 on the n800.
pretty, pretty,, pretty good. |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
I downloaded ubuntu 7.10 and burnt a disk. Then i ran the disk and installed(not in the true sense) ubuntu using install ubuntu option. since wifi wont work immediatly i used a ethernet cable to download both the 0s2008 bin file and the 3.0 flasher for x86. now go to applications and open xterm and follow the instructions on the cnet site....http://www.cnet.com/surveillance-sta....html?tag=head
Just one thing extra. After opening do the following cd Desktop chmod a+x ./flasher-3.0 ./flasher-3.0 -u -F RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin after unpacking sudo ./flasher-3.0 --enable-rd-mode sudo ./flasher-3.0 -k zImage -f sudo ./flasher-3.0 -n initfs.jffs2 -f sudo ./flasher-3.0 -r rootfs.jffs2 -f -R And that is it you are done. I am a linux noob and i assure you tat it is a lot easier than it looks. And dont worry about bricking it... just follow the instructions and you will hvae os2008. |
Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!
I haven't try OS2008 with my N800 but...
I was reading User's guide of N810 and found out that Clear device... feature will remove all your data from internal non-removable memory card from N810 and I think this means removable-internal card for N800 users. So be careful out there if your going to use N810-OS2008 in your N800 because this feature may remove all your data from internal memory card  I think this feature will work differently with official OS2008 release for N800 or I really hope so ;) |

Yeah . my card is still the same. IInfact the maps downloaded directly to my internal memory card. I dont know if this is autiomatic because my external 4gig card was almost full. SO i think it decides to download the maps to any space which the 500 mb maps can fit.
