Re: OS2008 map downloads
Yep, just finished and it works. I have no clue why yours isn't working. What speed is your internet connection? Maybe it's timing out? Now if I could just get it to see my gps again.

Re: OS2008 map downloads
Is it possible to download maps with PC and then transfer them manually to memory card? I didn't find any instructions from Wayfinder website.

Re: OS2008 map downloads
Try removing the 128MB card completely and just put in your larger card into the internal slot (leave the 128mb one out for now). Then you should be able to run Map and download maps.
The way I see it, the first time you run Map it installs its config area onto the internal card. Then even if you swap the cards around, if it finds a card with its Map config on it, it will continue to use that one. Thats why you need to remove the 128MB card completely, install the big card into the internal slot and run map again. I had the exact same problem and this fixed it. Afterwards you might be able to remove all the map config from the 128MB card and swap the cards back around, I haven't tested that. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
This trick works, after removing 128MB card, the maps installed with no problem.
Thanks, |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
I can confirm that if you download to one internal card, then switch it to the external slot, the maps app finds the maps still. Thus, just put the card you want the maps on into the internal slot for download.
Also, it seems you need somewhat more than the space the map takes (maybe 2x as much?) free before the download and install will succeed. I tried putting the USA east maps onto the device with about 900 MB free on the internal card, and it kept failing at the install point. Not 100% sure that was the problem, but it seems to be an issue. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
They probably use the same database of info for all the devices they support and "compile" the correct format on the device when you download it. That's the only reason I can see it doing the installing thing after a download.

Re: OS2008 map downloads
Their "maps" for the US are half-assed. In Nokia's OTHER map software for the N95 you can select what individual states you'll need and it downloads each one one after the other. The problem is that MANY ISPs are probaby ganking those 600+MB downloads ala Comcast using Sandvine. Of course it's not a problem for Europeans since their ISPs aren't doing that (at least T-Mob in Germany did when I lived there) and their map downloads are smaller.
Nokia needs to get on the ball and in addition to USA-East and USA-West (pick a side, we're at war...) they should allow individual state downloads. I mean, right now I only need Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska (home of Bill Braaaaasky!) so why the hell should I be forced into constant failed downloads of 600+MB of data I don't need? Also, the more stuff Nokia launches here the more they need to think about putting a state-side server mirror. Remember, almost all our international traffic is being "copied" now to the NSA... I can't even download the 1MB Singapore map. Something's wrong with their damn servers I guess or they have them "locked down" to prevent people with N800 MAC addresses from downloading from the servers until a set date/time. My conclusion on the new built-in map program? To hell with it, and the built-in email and RSS feed reader. I swear, for every two steps Nokia makes forward with this thing they take three steps back. TomTom on my N95 stomps *** over all others to me. |

I add my thanks here too. This trick worked for me. I downloaded Singapore just to test and it worked. Now downloading US west. So far even tho os08 is incomplete, it's sure looking good to me. update: The download for US west is *verrrrry* slow, hence it looks for all the world like it isn't working. Staring at the progress bar *verrry* closely tho, revealed a one pixel move in about a minute...or more:o |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
I found the same thing. The message was not very helpful. It was saying the maps failed to download but in reality the card was just getting full.
I had to free up bunch of space on my internal card. I had plenty of space on my external card but it was ignored. I also deleted the partialy download maps directory and then had much better luck. I have downloaded the eastern US. I am finding the map data must be quite old also. The street I live on does not exist in their maps. The street has existed for at least 2 years. I moved into the house a year ago. The street already existed when we bought the lot about 20 months ago and had grass growing along the side walk. The street exists in google maps, virtual earth... |

Re: OS2008 map downloads
You do have to have room on your internal sd card, but it took me a little while to figure out how to download maps seperate from that.
In "Map" you go to the main menu and select "maps." Then you see a window with "Maps in device" and "Available maps." When you select "Available maps" nothing is there BUT if you click on the "Refresh" button on the bottom a list of maps is downloaded. Then you choose your map and download. Maybe that was obvious to everyone else but it took a dunce like me a while to figure out. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
lol....
:-) I Know what you mean, i have gone through the same a while ago.. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
BTW - I was getting the "failed to update map list," too. It turned out that privoxy was causing it problems. I disabled my proxy settings and got the list (and maps).

Re: OS2008 map downloads
I activated Maps with my Navicore key and downloaded maps for US East, West and Canada, no problem. Sure it's slow but I let it do that over night and in the morning it was there. I find a fact that I can download maps for other regions even though I only have license for North America navigation a plus.
|
Re: OS2008 map downloads
Yeah, I forgot to mention, I stuck a fresh 2Gb card into internal slot to basically emulate what N810 has, and to avoid mucking with the original Navicore card.

I have followed the directions outlined above but to no avail. I thought the map app was supposed to come with free installed maps that we could view but not navigate on. Also, when I try to request the free license to evaluate the app I get a failure to connect message . You can't even buy the damn thing. I love my Garmin nuvi 200W. Amen. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
I had errors downloading the maps; so, I deleted the maps directory and tried again. Then it worked --- took all night for the 600+ West Coast maps. However, a try before that, downloading locked up the tablet --- forcing a reboot. After that, my SD card became Read-Only. aaargh! Time for a reformat! :(

Re: OS2008 map downloads
I to have entered the OS2008 Twilight Zone regarding my Navicore that was working perfectly under OS2007.
Now I cannot access either the old Navicore or the new "Maps". If I attempt to purchase the new Map I'm told that I must first download a map. When I attempt to download a map the download starts the progress bar and just sits there...forever. I cannot seem to re-install the old Navicore. I have plenty of storage room and I have the original Navicore Memory card installed in the N800. My thanks for any suggestions? |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
anyone know how I can download map data from the website and install it manually? it keeps failing when I try downloading it from my nokia. thanks. i have an n800.

I still don't sure is the "Map" App is Free or is a paid application.... If it's a paid App, Then I don't need to waste my time to download the map data! ::: |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
The basic "Map", with mapping functionality, is free, included with the OS. Routing is a paid (and rather expensive, compared to the competition) extra to that.

Re: OS2008 map downloads
:::
Thats mean the "N800 Map Free" will not (a) Show you the Route (b) using Bluetooth GPS Am I said that right..? Thanks......! ::: |

Uninstalled map yesterday, bloody useless.
Much happier with maemo mapper :-). |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
This is the first thing i really hate about the tablet. when the whole world is giving routing free. .., why not give it to us for free. voice guided instructions can be premuium

Re: OS2008 map downloads
I found this at http://www.wayfinder.com/internettablet
It says: "As a Nokia N810 Internet tablet user you can try Wayfinder Navigator for 7 days free of charge." Does this means that the Maps software will expire in 1 week? I flashed my N800 2 days ago. Please advice. Thanks, Ramkre |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
No. It means that the voice step-by-step navigation will expire in 7 days. Maps software that is preinstalled is free and will stay installed on your IT.
I would save the 7 day trial for some trip when you can actually test it. |

Comparing MaemoMapper to WayFinder (Nokia Map)
I like MaemoMapper for the Google Hybrid maps, routing before-hand between two known POIs, and for the sheer effort that Gnuite has put into it... but I wouldn't compare it to Wayfinder Navigator nor put it on par. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Yesterday I drove over 70mi to a place I hadn't been before. I knew about it an hour earlier, and I didn't have access to WiFi. I could either plot it on MaemoMapper across a slow AT&T GPRS/EDGE connection or use WayFinder. Along the way, I was looking for a good Thai restaurant to stop and eat at. As a GPS application, WayFinder works perfectly. It recalculates quickly when I miss an exit or need to find another route around a traffic jam. It's useful for finding routes or POIs I'd have missed otherwise. The "Christopher (UK)" voice is better than flite in MaemoMapper or my Garmin, but that's subjective. As someone who travels, and needs instant access to routing with quick recalculating, it's not a fair comparison. WayFinder is worth the 89 EU ($127 USD) for anyone who wants to use their N810 as they would a Garmin or Tomtom. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
Thanks for the replies.
If it won't expire then it's good to download the maps to the SD card. The bottom line here is that without activation you get a working GPS software without Voice navigation nor point A to point B guidance, right? It will show you where you are and it will move as you move. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
yes, it will still show you the guidance from point A to point B, but without VOICE guidance.
someone correct me if I am wrong. |
Re: OS2008 map downloads
Hello,
I was able to download the maps without problems (took a while, though - around one hour for West USA). However, now my Applications Manager is showing an update for the Maps app but if I click on "Update" it gives me back the following message: "Unable to Install. Software contains updates to packages installed from a fifferent source and is likely to harm the system. Contact software author.". Anyone else getting this message also? The Maps app I have running is the one that came with OS 2008. If I click on "Version" within Maps I get: App v.2.2.6.377 Map v.2.2.1.347 TA2006.10 Application Manager lists the "update" as v.2.2.6.377-1 |
