Who is moving to OS2008
Hey All,
I'm curious about who is moving to OS2008 now using this process or waiting for the official release? As for me, I'm waiting for the official release. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
Of note, it'll installer with flasher 2.0 on OS X, so option 2 should probably be amended. ;)
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
Hmmmm I can't seem to edit the poll text - I didn't know that though! Hopefully people will get the drift though :)

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
well, I was keep reading about this since this morning, and couldn't decide exactly what to do (since there were warning posted about the USB bug), then I tought to take a chance and if I brick this I will buy 810 :-)
and nothing happed, it is awesome, and very stable, no crashes so far... I am glad I choose to upgrade. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I tried to flash but I kept getting the same error so I flashed back to OS2007 for now.
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I use my N800 all the time and I need Skype, so I'm staying with OS2007 until the official release. And, even after the release I'll probably wait to read the comments here to be sure everything works that I need. I'm new to Ubuntu and Internet Tablets. I'll never upgrade past Windows 2000 on my CPU. Unfortunately, some programs for my business require it.
But, I think what I've seen this community do is amazing. Thank you for sharing it here. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I'm using now the OS2008 but it is that N810 version so I don't see why to move at this moment to OS2008 because there is very number of applications for OS2008. Some functions doesn't work on N800 fully so I'm also reverting back to OS2007 soon. It's quite nice this OS2008 still.

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I've personally had enough problems with the "official" releases to keep me from even considering installing something beta-ish. Add to that the fact that barely anything is ported yet.
Have fun, and let us know how you like things, you brave, hacker souls. ;) |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
other than the lack of ported apps, it is great. 2008 runs like a dream....faster and more aesthetically pleasing for sure.
Google Calendar now works, which is a biggie for me. Thr install was seamless, once I got ubuntu running. And as a side note, ubuntu is great! It had been a couple years since I tried Linux and the guis have sure improved. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I was a little nervous about it and in hindsight it required a bit of doing, but it was actually fun! It's one of the reasons I got and continue to enjoy the IT.
Sure, there are not many apps that have been ported yet, but what I've seen so far is much faster and easier to use. I'm really looking forward to the flood of 08 apps...thanks in advance to all the developers who have been and are still working hard to port their apps to the new OS! Tests with the browser now prove, to me anyway, that this is much better. Gmail, which used to take up to a minute to load fully, just loaded in 10 seconds, which is a truly noticable difference. Also, Google reader and docs, which were both notoriously slow, have just loaded in the same amount of time! Awesome!:) |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I'll wait for the official release. Currently Im happy with my N800, and this way everything will have been gone over and hopefully any major bugs will be known.

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I was anxious about taking the plunge and exposing my N800 to an OS not officially released by Nokia. I spent yesterday watching the ITT threads about OS2008, waiting for someone to complain.
Over 400 postings later, OS2008 on an N800 doesn't appear to have blown up on anyone. I took the plunge this morning. It was relatively easy and straight forward. In the world of UNIX, it doesn't get much easier than that. Installing Openbox/Rox/KDE on a N800 looks far more detailed, so I haven't taken that plunge. So far, I have no regrets. I might have waited longer, but I think it'll be another month or more before we see an official OS2008 release from Nokia for the N800. I'm excited about my N810 pre-order as well, but I'm hoping OS2008 on my N800 will keep me occupied until the N810 ships (Still no idea when, but told "ETA 11/23" from MCO). |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I'd like someone to patch OS2008 to allow me to boot into OS2008 (flash) or OS2007 (internal SDHC).
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I think there should be another item:
Wait until more apps come out. Honestly I bought this for internet only but when I found out the potential for this device to do more than I was hooked. Now using the n800 for about 6 months I can't say its been an easy transition from hundreds windoze and palm apps to a few handfull. Also the apps that do come out aren't for the common end user. Still waiting for a word processor, pim, bible, money programs. They just aren't there yet. |

I wonder how long it'll be before we see OS2008 looking as well as OS2007 does? |

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
The application manager is much better than in OS2007. For example after you install an application, it leaves the list scrolled down to the same point in the list that you were at. In OS2007 it would be really bloody annoying to install multiple apps via the app manager, as it would scroll back to the top of the list each time!
Of course using apt-get was always an option, but its almost as annoying if you don't have a bluetooth keyboard handy. Also, if you have a problem with repositories, then it actually TELLS you which one is having a problem and allows you to edit it! In OS2007 it would just error and you'd not have a clue what was going wrong. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
i'll wait until i know that xournal works. (or i figure out how to build it in the sdk)
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
Well, there's now one more flashed n800. A fairly painless (if nerve-racking) experience. Thanks zero, for the impetus :)

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
kagu won't work :( managed to get it to install by manually adding the bora repos, but kagu-scanner complains about missing cairo module. any ideas?
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
No. All I know is that I had received some weird dbus error so I figured that it didn't work. When I noticed Kagu in my application menus today (despite a failed install) and tried it, I saw it worked. Not sure what you need for your problem. Didn't have that error.
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
did you install via the repos? it says it fails to install, no dbus error though, but won't run
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I installed Python from the repos. I installed Kagu from the deb on the Kagu site, as suggested by disq. There was also an additional repository to add, but I can't remember it right now. I'll post it here when I have the time.
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
on a side note, omweather and simple-launcher applets both work, apart from transparency
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
yay! manually installed python and it's working
|
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
You forgot a choice:
I loaded it to check it out and then reverted to OS2007. (Until the Navkit license will work to get the Wayfinder software working... and I also need skype.) I suspect that Skype and other projects like that have already got it all ported and ready.. but since the OS2008 is not officially released... we don't have the repositories yet. This is probably true for a lot of applications. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
Kagu works now on Chinook, thanks to disq. See the new 1.0.10 release thread and this post in particular for details:

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
BTW, I'd love to see Xournal ported to OS 2008 too. Anyone working on that?

Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I installed OS2008 last night. It was pretty straightforward, but I wonder if I can/should turn off the dev mode that was activated in the install process. I get a lot of diagnostic info during boot.
The lack of ported apps is a problem, although presumably time will solve that. I had forgotten how truly awful the standard mail client is, particularly in IMAP mode. The apps I miss most are Skype, Claws Mail and AisleRiot Solitaire. Maemo Mapper is gone and the Navicore mapper can't seem to download the 700-megabyte eastern US maps. (I don't have a GPS anyway.) So far I have not been able to connect via Bluetooth/GPRS, which may be the OS or T-Mobile's fault. Can't tell. And the Bluetooth daemon was eating CPU like mad last night, forcing a reboot. I was able to install Python, Pidgin, Kagu, UKMP, et cetera after adding the appropriate repositories. The UI is visually MUCH nicer and the transparent applets are cool. I can't tell much about speed; it may be faster but 20 percent isn't going to make your socks roll up and down. I'm really happy to see Nokia moving in the direction of a standard release for both 800 and 810, and look forward to the "real" release. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I am ready but from what I see 3rd party app wise I'm going to wait until the apps I use most show up on maemo! Rhapsody is ready but thIngs like SKYPE, Pidgin, etc. I haven't seen anything yet. Once they show up I'm all over it!
Now to start saving all my repository settings before they get dumped when I update! Is there anything else I should save i.e. Contacts and the like? |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
I installed OS2008 and then went back to OS2007 because mplayer is buggy. Seek, suspend/resume don't work.(A-V goes out of sync) The mplayer GUI also doesn't work.
Only way to get it working is to use the command line and for seeking use -ss hh:mm:ss. I will wait until mplayer gets fixed or I might fix it on my own if time permits. I just installed scratchbox2 and qemu. BTW Is the MBX chip deactivated? Will developing a 2.6.x driver solve most of our problems? |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
Has OpenSSH (client and/or server) been ported yet?
The non-bundled things I depend on are: a) OpenSSH and the advanced xterm b) pidgin c) Tasks (though, it has GUI issues, it's still mostly useful/usable) d) simple launcher And it'd be nice to have VNC, Dates, Maemo Recorder, and Camera, as well. |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
openssh, openssh-client and openssh-server packages are all available via Application Manager in OS2008 - make sure you enable the "extras" catalogue/repository.

Pidgin is ported and works. I received an error/failure message on installing the AIM protocol, but it did install and I am able to connect with AOL. As far as I know, none of the GPE stuff is ported, including Tasks. Others have reported Simple Launcher works, but lacks transparency. |

But thanks (to you and the others) for all of the info. Looks like I'll be able to upgrade as soon as I have the time :-) |
Re: Who is moving to OS2008
Thank you developers ...thank you community for letting us in...Tried 2008 OS, installation was easy. Like so many others ....I LOVE IT !!!, Faster, GOOD LOOKING, fingerfriendly, This is what I call a real uppgrade ! The GPS gets more integrated in the OS (Nokia please keep that GPS OS integration for us n800 users too). And I noticed the the NOKIA envirometal concern advicing you to unplug the charger when battery is fully loaded. ;-) The Internet tablet is not at static device....it is getting better and better . Keep up the good work Small steps Big steps but continue to improve
