Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

We have installed a new feature in the forums that allows members to show their gratitude for helpful members in the forums.

A new icon called 'Thanks' can now be seen at the bottom right of each post. If you think a member has helped you answer a question that has been bugging you for quite some time, or maybe a member just contributed something good that you didn't know before, show your gratitude by clicking on the new 'Thanks' button.

:D

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

I'd like to thank you for that - but there's no button :)

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

It might be that the button doesn't show up on the mobile versions of the site?

Correct, right now the thanks feature is not yet ready for the mobile templates.

I always use the mobile version, and I'd like to thank a lot of people... please put it also there - maybe as a text link?

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

Doesn't this sort of depersonalize the expression of gratitude? :)

You should now see it on the 'Mobile' theme.

Thanks.

If you use it instead of replying then yes ;)

It shows below the post which members have given their thanks so I don't think it depersonalises the expression of thanks, it just keeps things neater and tidier! :) Also you get a "karma" count for "future usage"! :)

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

I think it's an awesome feature, and have already been enjoying it!

I'd hate to see what would happen if General Antilles got the "No Thanks" feature he requested though... :D

Why, it'd backfire spectacularly on me, of course! :D

Reggie, I find the :-) link only in mobile II, can we have it in plain mobile too?

Rocketman 2007-11-16 07:20

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

I think we need a "anti-thanks" button as well, so that members can show each other just how much they despise each other too! We can have the two cancel out and the net result is an overall Karma point system.

Cool feature. Will the overall totals for all users be exposed at a particular URL which could then feed into the Maemo user profile karma system?

We will try to do that in the future.

Although a "thank you" button is commendable, I immediately saw a major flaw:

Where's the "I flip you the middle finger" button?

I don't mean to rain on the parade, but I don't like it. It's just using up more space. Many forums have a thumbs up/down feature or +/- that you can click and rate the thread or each post. If you click further you could see which user liked/disliked the topic/info. I'd rather see that. The "XYZ" thanks... deal will get old fast and annoy, IMHO.

Actually it has four major advantages:

1. You don't need to do a quick reply to say thanks which I guess makes the thread longer
2. Members viewing a thread will see immediately which post/reply is helpful
3. It promotes helpfulness in the forums
4. Nokia can make use of the data

Reggie: This is what I was thinking of...

http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/

you can see the rating in the list,
click on a thread and you can rate each response or the thread.

Another example: http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdi...hp?sduid=0&f=9

Reggie 2007-11-16 15:16

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

We do have that now. See:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...splay.php?f=30

Above each thread we also have the 'Rate Thread'.

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

I like it. But, I think the font should be made smaller and maybe a gray color, so it is less obtrusive, rather than now where it looks like a bold white color.
- I mean the font for the "The Following 2 Users Say Thank You ..." text.

Rebski 2007-11-16 15:47

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

Maybe a check box or radio button with a selectable list to choose from.
e.g.
Thanks;
Don't be stupid;
Search before you post;
Why did you start this thread in the wrong forum?;
Off topic;
Did you actually read any of the existing posts on the subject;
What makes you think anyone is interested?;
etc.

I am sure sugestions for the list will be plentiful.

Sorry, but we'll just go for positive reinforcement. ;)

LOL!

That would be huge fun! I'd love it, but then I'm thick-skinned. It would probably scare a lot of people off.

Actual results:
#2 & #3. Every post/reply says "thanks"! (is this helpful?)

Yes. On a long thread, other members weigh in on the topic and a lot of replies are at times really helpful.

For me, the Thanks! button is missing on all of your posts but available on everybody elses! How wierd... have you upset somebody? :)

linuxrebel 2007-11-21 05:11

Re: Say 'Thanks!' to other members with one click

It's either that or Texrat just can't be thanked enough... But I too don't see the thanks (green word) on Texrats posts only.

Yeah, that's the weirdest thing.. in this thread there's a "Thanks" button for everyone, except for Texrat!

Did you perchance give yourself the "invisible" status?

Isn't there also something weird with the two post dates before this one?
Or does it take account of each user's GMT settings? (don't know anything about vbulettin).
Strange display from here.

Arg I would prefer a 24h time.
Lazy packets?
