Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

Hi people. I just took the dive and ordered my N800 off amazon over here in Germany. I have also bought a class 6 8GB sd card that I will be using in conjunction with a 2GB card that I already own.

As an N800 noob, what are the top ten things I should do immediately after it arrives?

1. Search the forums.

The other nine will come shortly thereafter.

not exactly the answer I was expecting...

I was asking for people's personal opinions on what they think the best aps are etc.

Here's what I plan to do and please comment on anything you would add to take away from my list.

1. OS 2008
2. Bomberman etc...
3. Mplayer
4. Kopete equivalent? (for yahoo video support)
5. AMSN (or equivalent?for msn video support)
6. Quiver Image Viewer
7. ACCESS Garnet (Treo user)
8. Game emulators (MAME?)
9. Mauku (Jaiku)
10. do N-Gage games work on the new OS yet?

Go to downloads.maemo.org and browse through your 10 favorite categories. :)

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

1. Setup wireless access at home and enjoy surfing the web wherever you go in your house

2. Setup bluetooth access with your phone and enjoy surfing the web wherever you go at all.

3. Browse your local coffeeshops for free wireless access and enjoy surfing the web whilst drinking coffee.

4. Install Kagu/UKMP/Canola and load up your N800 with all your favorite tracks.

5. Explore all the other great apps on maemo to find your favorites.

...

99. Install OS2008 when youre bored doing all the other stuff, because as of yet, there really are very few applications available for it. Sure it's snappy, sure it's pretty, sure it's the latest and greatest, but without apps, whatcha gonna do?

There is a lot of that style of posting going on here. People should at least post some key words if the "search the forum" is used or dont post at all.

The things I did right away are:
1. Buy some sd cards
2. Buy foldable keyboard
3. GPE
4. Setup repo's
5. Gnumeric
6. Rhapsody
7. Buy car charger
8. Notecase
9. Mplayer
10. Buy a case

  • Install one of the quicklaunchers, e.g. simple-launcher.
Then you can start your favourite appålications directly from the screen instead of wading through the menues.
  • The Vagalume Last.fm client has quickly become my favourite internet radio too (if interested, search the forum for 'vagalume').

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

1)First thing I wanted was a good solid case that I could open easily and would protect the screen. Still experimenting with ipaq, ds lite, and some caselogic cases, Ill post an update on the ultimate under $10 :P

1b)After that I add extra repositories for that extra software and hooya!
maemo.org and http://gronmayer.com/n800/repos/ are a good start.
Activate RedPill mode if you're feeling dangerously adventurous.

2)FbReader - thanks to the mighty internets, I either go to http://manybooks.net/
or gutenberg for free books. And then you can find lots of books in english in Russian and Polish sites if you use their proxies :P
There are lots of torrents too with sci-fi and other books. I have about 100 books on my n800 right now.

3)Entertainment - I download movies and watch them in the default player or mplayer. THis is a big topic in itself if you're not familiar with formats and all that.
can be challenging

4)System apps for them console jockey needs!
xterm - a must!
ssh and sshd - a must!
vnc viewer
ping, tracerounte, wlan status, etc. Everything I need. If you need these, you will know :P
5)entertainemnt- lxdoom and battle for wesnoth. Nethack for those good old days.
6)now working on the os 2008 upgrade

Oh how I wish someone would port fluxbox to the nokia n800!

i have been reading this forum for a while but only joined after i purchased my n800. i purchased an 8GB class 6 sd card for the moment. i have older 2GB cards around the house i can use with it. i will definitely look into getting the foldable keyboard! i also have an extra DS-lite case that can now be put to good use :)

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

you're welcome!

basically, with an e-book reader, terminal and network tools, a solid case and a bluetooth keyboard, and some 1-gb cards (I don't like bigger cards - I can get 1gb for $3-5 and they fit a movie or 100s of books)the nokia n800 is a complete replacement for a laptop for me.

What i'm thinking of next is getting a cheap+portable tiny wireless router

that way I can go anywhere where there is an Ethernet connection (I do some computer related consulting gigs every now and then)
and stay current without using someone else's setup and risking compromising my security for email etc.

airsnort and kismet have proven somewhat unsatisfactory for me, but I'm still experimenting with them, so cannot give an honest appraisal.

my only gripes with Nokia tablets are similar to everyone else's-
1)poor usb support- the lack of power-over usb connection, lack of usb devices support without a hack,
2)lack of screen protection

Thus the added expenses of cases, wlan hubs and bluetooth keyboards.

One great thing about running gnu/linux on this thing is you can do remote backups by ssh into the nokia and downloading all your files, including apps.

That way if you want to flash your os to an upgrade but don't want to reinstall all the aps, you can just copy them back and save hours.

I'll make a howto if I don't find a decent one soon.

And if you're not running gnu/linux on your main computer, I would suggest installing a dual-boot debian distro, like ubuntu.
This really powers the usage of the nokia n800 up immensely, as it allows for faster upgrades, painless ssh/sshd/rsync integration, and is a great experience to boot.
The cheapest replacement for a bluetooth keyboard (cost- $0) is ssh into your nokia off your main computer.

type away!

I agree with the OS2008, you can wait. I still have resisted :)

0:Configure repositories (*)
1:Xterm
2:Becomeroot
3:Ssh
4:Mplayer
5:Pidgin
6:SimpleLauncher

Go to maemo catalog, have fun.

97: Install multiboot from fanoush
98: Install xfce from penguinbait (really nice interface); kde I didn't try so I don't recommend.
99: Install OS2008
100: Start to develop your own apps and share with us ;)

(*):
For setup repos, I use this:
Using xterm and becomeroot , copy this to /etc/apt/sources.list:
This will save you some time. Then go in application manager and update list of applications.

There's a driver for Realtek RTL8150 based USB to Ethernet adapters in OS2008, you might want to wait and see if anyone gets one working, unless of course you'd rather not have any wires hanging off your N800 :)

I made a post asking if anyone's tried any adapters, but no responses, so I may just grab one and try myself, as they're only about $5.

question 1 : A guy in some website published an information that N800 playing Divx through canola after the firmware upgrade. It didnt work for me .

How bout you guys? Is divx file playing for you all ?

question 2 : Even after installing MicroB browser , why are we not able to access webmessenger.yahoo.com?

We have flash9 and ajax in microB browser i guess. Then why are we not able to access such sites?

question 3: I am not able to switch from microB browser to opera becas i dont see SET ENGINE option under close as you guys have. A person on this forum tried to help me how to program to get that option but i am not so good in linux. So what will happen if i uninstall this MicroB browser? Will i get the new opera back ?

Please guys reply for all my 3 questions.

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

If you really want to 'wow' yourself with your new tablet, try installing VNC. It'll allow you to take control of your desktop computer and see it's screen on your tablet.

Becomeroot is always a plus as a lot of the cool things you can do might need root access. Just be careful, you don't want to turn your new tablet into an expensive paperweight.

Installing Canola is a definite plus, it gives the tablet a nice polished interface for playing movies, music, and viewing pictures.

Otherwise, application-wise, it's pretty much up to you. I only have a 770, and the way I use it has changed about 20 times over the past two years. Now it's mainly media-on-the-go.

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

...buy a case.

Lucky for us N800 is the same size as the Sony PSP game box. Best Buy has a really nice "firm" carrying case with an internal screen shield for the princely sum of $11 and change! It's black, zippered, has net pockets in it for your extra SD monsters full of nasty music.

No need to spend big bucks for a case. The case has a big snapclip for your belt loop.

Headbanger Audio UPC 08056 00115 on a blue cardboard peg hanger that says "Travel Case - Etui de voyage" on it.

My Nokia GPS puck even fits in it.

Get evince if you ever want to view a PDF. Much better than the built-in one.
I like mpd and mmpc for music playing, but whatever your preference, you _must_ get some better media player than the built-in one.
If you want an xterm (you will, for any serious fiddling with the device) get the "flying keyboard" one: http://74.86.202.247/forums/showthread.php?t=10348
If you're a commandline junkie, but not a vi-person, get JOE: http://www.opbyte.it/maemo/
If you want to take notes, highlight PDFs, etc., Xournal!
Because writing stuff up on the tablet, exporting (with notebook paper background) as PDF, and printing from the PC produces lovely results, and confuses little sisters into thinking you borrowed their sharpie collection.:)

Why much better? I think I'll reinstall it to give it a try..
What I don't like for the integrated one is that you have to tap rightclick and then next page to go to next page. Boring.. Or did I miss a shortcut. That's what I'm missing on the integrated one.

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

The problem with installing evince is that afterwards, when you click a pdf link in e.g. the browser, the system will launch evince instead of the built-in pdf reader. And evince won't show you the pdf.. either it can't be launched with the file as parameter, or the way to launch it is incorrectly set up. Not sure which one it is.

anidel 2007-11-21 10:32

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

Exactly,I've noticed the same behavior and removed evince since.
The internal PDF viewer on OS2008 has been greatly improved.
Faster and you can go back and fort by simply tapping on the side of the screen (a little arrow appear and fades out after the tap).
Very handy.

free 2007-11-21 12:31

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

Exactly why I removed it :)

This bug is probably easy to fix.

Ok I'll try the tap on the side. Thanks

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

Well, if they improved the one in OS2008 enough, that would be nice. I'm tired of the browsing issue too.
But why (I consider) it's much better than OS2007 version:

Evince lets me:
  • view 2 facing pages
  • view continuous scrolling
  • rotate (for portrait view)
  • use the TOC in many PDFs, instead of memorizing page numbers
  • easily go to page numbers (w/o menu)
And I'm happy to trade browser integration for all that. My main use is offline reading of course notes, manuals, exported PowerPoint presentations, etc., so it's not a big deal to save the odd online PDF, view it, and then delete it manually.

free,

I was going to follow your instructions:

"(*):
For setup repos, I use this:
Using xterm and becomeroot , copy this to /etc/apt/sources.list:"

but then I realized I don't know how to use both xterm & becomeroot together. Once I open xterm what I'm I supposed to do next?

i tried typing "/etc/apt/sources.list" and it gave me this:
"- sh: /etc/apt/sources.list: Permission denied"

does this mean I am missing "sh" (whatever that is)? I am a total newb so please bare with me =/

thanks in advance, lg

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

These lines I posted have to be copy-pasted in the file /etc/apt/sources.list

/etc/apt/sources.list is not a command!

So first you should install becomeroot.

With this, you will be able to become root ( by typing sudo gainroot in xterm ) and then will be able to edit this file (which is only writeable by root).
2 things:
*As somebody said, TAKE CARE, root has full power on the device. If you do a mistake, get ready for a reflash (happened to me already 3 times in 2 months)

*How will you copy-paste the content or how to overwrite the file...
Ok I've set up a webpage for you:
Grab wget:
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2007/wget
click install

Then
open xterm
Go to the correct directory:
cd /etc/apt
Become root (using becomeroot)
sudo gainroot
Make a backup of your current sources.list:
mv sources.list sources.list-orig
Grab the new sources.list from internet:
wget http://debfarm.free.fr/images/src.txt
Rename it
mv src.txt sources.list
Close xterm

Go in application manager and click on check for updates.
You should have more applications.
This sources.list is far from exhaustive, maybe I'll update the post later.

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

O.k. I haven't got a top ten per-say, but I'd like to encourage some users to give their Google Talk Video Chat a good chance, and play a little with it. It's not so bad at all. :)

This might be just 'pure user' thoughts, but in the home environment it can be very helpful as a video 'intercom' of sorts.

My wife is pregnant and due within six weeks. So, she is in bed a lot these days. I keep a few horses and we have found this to be quite FUN to 'check in' when I am out at the barn doing tidyup and chores. I suspect this may make things also easier when baby has arrived and wifey is feeding and I am not so close as to simply be called out loud through a couple of floors or across the driveway to the barn.

With the N800, I like that the camera can be rotated to have the view away from the user and towards 'a child' or the pet or another friend. My connection is medium high speed and I am basically happy with the image feed.

O.k., in that baby consideration as well, I just installed all the key baby cd's of melodic lullabies etc on my wife's N800 for her to have at her fingertips 'when needed' ;) (yes, yes mine will have them too!)

Just a couple of practical uses I felt moved to share that I am finding meaningful.

I'd start with configuring a web connection, and then view this site: http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.ph...&system=maemo3
and click on all the green arrows. Then your applications manager will have plenty of repositories configured and you'll have loooads of programs to choose from.

I will be getting the N800 for Christmas (the misses wont let me open it now :( ). I have been thumbing through this site for a few weeks and have come up with the following initial todo list:

1. Install OS2008
2. Install 8GB and 4GB SDHC cards
3. Set up repositories.
4. Install Apps (xterm, word processor, media apps, pdf viewer, IM)
5. Connect the N800 to my cell phone via Pdanet
6. Back up this "clean" set up.

If there is any thing goofy|wrong|ordered wrong|missing in the list, please let me know. :D

Re: Top Ten Things to do after buying an N800

Browse to and bookmark favorite webcam sites (local beaches, Times Sq., etc.).

It's fun to pull out the N800 from your pocket and impress friends by saying "Let's see what they're doing at the beach, NYC, New Orleans...." etc.

Kind'a invokes the myths or fairly tales of having a "magic mirror," or "gazing crystal" in the palm of your hand.

If I could just get peekaboo working correctly, or had someone to video chat with, it'd be even more impressive. But I did once secretly snap a pic of a friend and emailed it to his Touch while he was still talking.

Also, instead of just trying to describe favorite movies, videos, music, newstories, etc.you can just show people what you are talking about.
