GPE for OS2008
Go to http://www.cobb.uk.net/NokiaIT/#gpe and click on each application name to install it.
You should note that this is a work in progress and expect updates and fixes where required to follow. My experience is: - Calendar; ToDo; Contacts; Summary: All of them picked up my restored data and seem to be working fine File Manager: Seems to be working fine Timesheet: Installs but doesn't run. It did run for me on OS2007 though. Starling Audio Player: No drop down Menus LastFM: The submission failed with the following reason: Plugin bug. Not all request variables are set - got 2 parameters SyncD: Installs and is shown as an Installed Application but doesn't show up as an Extras application. But then I don't use syncing so maybe I am looking at it incorrectly. Your experiences may vary and it would be helpful if you could post them here. |
Re: GPE for OS2008
Yay thanks man, gpe-calendar and gpesummary seem to work fine. Now just waiting for erminig..
|
Re: GPE for OS2008
For ermining, you just need gtk.glade python binding. Which ll be available this week if i understand well one of the pymaemo mailling list post.

Re: GPE for OS2008
GPE works great - I use the Calendar and Contacts and the summary on my N810.
Thanks for the apps and the links. |
Re: GPE for OS2008
I believe gpesyncd is never explicitly launched by the user - apparently opensync launches it for me over SSH when I use my instructions. I certainly never saw it on 2007. I will test this out as soon as I get my device program 810.

Re: GPE for OS2008
Now that I have got my N810, the main problems seen so far with running GPE applications on OS2008 have been fixed. All the applications (Calendar, Contacts, Todo, Timesheet, Starling, Filemanager) run and seem to work. The categories crash has been fixed. The event details page now shows up. The gpe-summary homepage applet works (although the alternative gpe-calendar applet does not work yet). gpesyncd seems to work.
The link in the opening post of this thread is still the best way to install. Graham |

Re: GPE for OS2008
I know this probably isn't the place to ask this question, but while reading this thread it reminded me. Is there a configuration option for the GPE summary to show a 12 hour time rather then 24 hour time? For that matter, it probably pulls this from the GPE calendar. I have looked in both applications and don't see a option available to change from 24 hour display to 12. Or, is this how the data is entered (ie, I get my data into calendar using erminig pulling data from google, so maybe its there?).

Re: GPE for OS2008
so glad GPE has been fixed
|
Re: GPE for OS2008
Now if I could just figure out how to get the data from my Palm into it...
|
Re: GPE for OS2008
It seems like the instant kill switch on the apps has gone from categories to the Calendar. Whenever I try to view month, day, or week it instantly shuts down the application. Does anyone else have this issue?

Re: GPE for OS2008
Are there ways in GPE to:
- Bulk delete old appointments? I tried syncing to a Google calendar but that has no easy way to bulk delete either. So I exporting the Google cal, deleted the old stuff and rebuilt it with only current events. When I synced with erming all of the old stuff on GPE got promptly re-added to Google. - Can the calendar month view be changed to start on Sunday rather than Monday? - Can the day view be made to extend beyond 6PM without adding a 7PM appointment? - Can it be configured to work in 15 minute increments? I tap on 5PM to create an appointment and it assumes a 5:30 to 6:30 appointment. Sometimes it assumes a time of 5:15-6:15. There's a lot of tapping to adjust it to the times I really want. I never usually start things at HH:08 so 15 minute chunks would be desirable. Maybe I should RTM, Frank |
Re: GPE for OS2008
Using the links in the first post, I have successfully installed Todo, Contacts, and Timesheet. However, I am just not having any luck with calendar. After some downloading by the application manager, I get the following error:
"Unable to download gpe-calendar. Application package not found." Any thoughts on what might be wrong? Prolly something simple I overlooked . . . . Thanks in advance for any help! I'm looking forward to trying out GPE. |
Re: GPE for OS2008
Have you installed the maemo-hackers repository?

Re: GPE for OS2008
Does GPE Todo crash for everyone when trying to make a new category?
The category function is neat and without it I'll just stick to simple .txt's for my to-do list. |
Re: GPE for OS2008
Nope, I had not. I tried it, tho, and the same problem came up. But thanks for the suggestion . . .

Re: GPE for OS2008
Got it working . . . I uninstalled ALL of the repositories from the app manager, then clicked on the links to install the app, and it automatically added the repositories it needed. No idea why this worked; maybe there was some conflict among duplicate repository entries?
Anyway, it's now looking good! Thanks all. |

Do you have a particularly large number of events or alarms? Would you be willing to send me your database to try to reproduce the problem? I realise, of course, that the data is confidential. Please send me a private message if you are willing to send it to me and I will let you know what file(s) I need. Graham |
Re: GPE for OS2008
I had the same "application package missing" problem here, would be grateful for a solution. GPE's great, cant wait to try it.
EDIT: fixed now |

Sorry if the info is not that detailed.. I don't have it installed at this moment. Nevertheless, in order to make it happen you need to close first some panel which lives in the right side. (Was it a summary, event viewer, or something?) Then push the buttons for the different views (i.e. day, week, etc). BTW, The number of events/alarms is irrelevant.. If you still don't manage to reproduce it because of my crappy explanation, let me know. I'll install it and will give you exact steps. Hope it helps. |
Re: GPE for OS2008
Saturn, thanks. The key piece of information was to disable the sidebar view. I can now reproduce the problem. It does not seem to happen if the sidebar is present.
I have raised the priority of the relevant bug in the GPE bugzilla: http://bugs.linuxtogo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70 |
Re: GPE for OS2008
Are there efforts to migrate GPE to the regular maemo repos?
|
Re: GPE for OS2008

I intend to migrate GPE into extras, although I was hoping that we would have had some agreement on the process and criteria for migrating software from extras-devel to extras by now. I will have to just do it anyway, I guess. Now that it seems that the main chinook-related bugs are fixed I will also add the GPE applications into the OS2008 downloads pages. These will point to my .install files, which I will maintain and will redirect to the extras repos once GPE is there. Graham |
Incompatibility with Claws
I have had a report of a problem installing GPE on OS2008 which seems to be a problem with the Claws repository. One of the dependencies for gpe-calendar is libgpg-error0 which is present in several repositories. It is in extras, in maemo-hackers and, supposedly, in the Claws repository. Claws claims to have the newest version (1.4-2ubuntu1), but the file is actually missing! So, the gpe-calendar installation fails.
This means that you cannot install gpe-calendar if you have the Claws email repository currently enabled. The workround is to disable the claws repository in the application manager catalogue. If anyone has a Claws bugzilla account and could report the problem I would be grateful. As there is a version in extras it would be good if the Claws people just used that version and did not try to provide their own version. Graham |
Re: GPE for OS2008
@Graham: Done. ;)

Re: GPE for OS2008
Finally got my Palm data in.
Installed Palm desktop on my mac (I normally sync w/ my PC) and synced. ISync kicked in and brought it into iCal. GPE rejected that ical without comment. I eventually gave up and uninstalled it. Installed dual boot and KDE on my N810. Korganizer mported the ical file fom the mac without complaint. Copied KOrganizer's ical file to the SD card. Reinstalled GPE. Imported the Korganizer ical. It's pretty slow once you get a lot of events in there, but at least it works well enough so I can evaluate it. Are there any other config entries available, files to edit or whatever? I'd like to change the alarm sound, for instance. |

Thank you for your work with GPE. Writing freeware is often a chore! I had posted the above much earlier in the thread and have since concluded than the items in the above are not part of GPE and are wish-list items. Should I put them on the wish list or is this thread an okay place to muse about new features? Thank you again, Frank |

But your comment has prompted me to try to make some more progress tonight. If people are interested I can create another topic to track progress on Opensync. And if anyone is interested in helping out, for example by testing sync with different devices/systems, let me know. The big problem is going to be that there is no good GUI. I am not a GUI guy and we could really do with someone willing to work on creating a GUI for local syncing on the tablet. I believe there are python bindings available for opensync so it may be easiest to create in python (I'm not a python guy either!). Quote:
In the meantime, if anyone thinks they might like to have a go at improving it, feel free to work on it and submit patches! All help is welcome!! Graham |
Re: GPE for OS2008
I'm sorry to hear they're not working on GPE calendar.
It's got a fair ways to go, at least to meet my needs. I was disappointed to discover last night that disabling a calendar doesn't speed it up. I need access to all my past events, but KDE gets really slow with big files. I was hoping to break it into several calendars, and turn them on as needed. I created a new calendar, with one event in it, and turned off the main one. Didn't help the performance. Any ideas? I can send you my unimportable .ics. It's 3700 events, 270k zipped. It has a bunch of gobbledygook in it that Pimlico's Datebook5 put in the memo fields to specify icons and links without screwing up the native Palm database. I also have it with that stuff edited out. KDE PIM likes it fine either way. If you want someone to test sync solutions, I have Tungsten C and Tungsten T Palms. No Linux desktops, though, just XP and OSX. |
Category colors
Hi!
Thanks for your hard work Graham! I recently bought the N810 as it seemed to be a good replacement for my Archos PMA (pretty much the same functions - just older/worse grafics & inbuildt HDD (makes the dev. pretty heavy - on the other hand 30gb space..)). Anyway - GPE seems to be a quite powerful PIM aplication. I'd love to use it as my primerily calendar. Unfortunatley i cant use the calender, as long as the category-colors aren't supported (in monthly view). As this bug seems to exist for more than a year now, i wonder if it will be fixed anytime soon? I don't assume you have any idea, what's wrong with the coding/wich CSS (if they are used?) needs to be checked? Maybe you or one of your mates is able to tell me where to find the file that defines the colors? If not - please tell me wich file you recently edited to fix the other category bug. OH - and one more thing... how/where can i find the (any) files to edit on my N810? I must say the maemo os is nice - yet it does confuse me in there structure. I didn't see any config files/dir's when connectig the N810 to my PC yet. Either they are in some subdir i didn't find yet - or hidden somehow. I suppose there are a lot of hidden files - as the "root" directory is more or less empty when connected to my machine (ubuntu 7.10). Have a nice day! 2beers |
