8GB sdhc Kingston seen as 8GB ends at 4GB!
Hi all,
I ve bought 8GB sdhc(speed 4) kingston memory card. I ve read also about all problems with sd cards, so I felt lucky when OS saw 8GB capacity. Recently I have got memory card full message - at 4GB boundary!! Card is seen as 8GB but allows to write 4GB only ... Anybody had the problem of this kind? Is it possible to make _two_prtitions_ using N800? ( I have no sdhc reader to do it) and when I saw the experiences of others I wont risk to do it using N800 as a reader with cable and f.ex. partition magic or sth.. Any ideas or smart program for partitioning? (could be 2 of them on my card - doesnt matter) Regards Bryxon |

First of all, if you have ever used that card on some computer, make sure that it is not filled with some hidden, OS-specific trash can folder, and that it did not get reformatted to 4GB. If you never had it mounted anywhere besides on the N800 (that is, never took it out, and have not used it on a PC, with the N800 USB tethered as a SD card drive), the card is toast, and half its memory got damaged and was remapped by the card-internal controller, in which case it would be pointless to split format it - you could merely put two 2GB partitions on it, while it still lasts, which probably won't be long.

Do you have the latest version of OS2007 installed?
I have an 8GB Transcend class 6 card ($56 from Newegg), and it works fine in the internal slot (using the latest OS2007 update). |
Re: 8GB sdhc Kingston seen as 8GB ends at 4GB!
Hi again - thanks for answers!
I am using os version: 4.2007.26-8 and it seems to be a bit old but supporting sdhc. Quoting the thread about newest os version: Quote:
I had my sd card in N800 internal slot from the begining, once tryied to read it by the sd reader in the PC which was sdhc incompatible - without any result - could it burn the half of capacity? Anyway, personaly speaking the mess about compatibility on the memmory card market drives many of us insane..I saw so many of sd dead cards - mostly expensive ones.. Is there a problem with the standards? Should it be a warning about possible card damage in old readers? btw. Recently Ive replaced the cracked cover (dont sit on your cards!) with the missing write-protect lock in the transcend sd 4GB. It still worked but in read only mode. I did it really gentle using old cover from 16MB card. After 2h of working with magnyfying glass- it completly refused to work  (static electricity?? magic?) Greets Bryxon |
Re: 8GB sdhc Kingston seen as 8GB ends at 4GB!
The write-lock on SD cards is just a hint to the device using the card, it doesn't physically write-protect the card. The N800, for example, completely ignores the write-lock state.

Re: 8GB sdhc Kingston seen as 8GB ends at 4GB!
where did you buy the card from?
I have heard of a scam where people re-label card to larger capacities. I think it possible to false information in the partition table to make a partition look bigger than it is. a quick google reveals people claiming that as many as 90% of flash cards on ebay are fake. |
Re: 8GB sdhc Kingston seen as 8GB ends at 4GB!
Well Ive bought it on Polish biggest auction stock called "allegro.pl"...
The seller looked like reliable and all the comments were ok...the card package was originaly sealed with all of these Kingston certificates, leaflets.. etc. It was not about changing one sticker on the card I am sure about it...and Nokia says it is 8GB (7.51gb) but indicates full card around 4GB.. DiskUsage app says it is 8,987,956 KB and showed around 50% at "full card" I ve order the reader - and in a couple of day we will see on reformat.. Anyway the issue about broken 4GB card was for my girlfriend pocket-pc:) I havent tested it in my N800... Greets Bryxon |
Re: 8GB sdhc Kingston seen as 8GB ends at 4GB!
I have just checked my internal card and the N800 says it is a 4G when my pc says its an 8G as it should be.
I have the same card type in ht e external slot and this is ok |
