Re: no street names on Map application
Mine did the same thing, no street names. I drove around with the gps on and closed the map application on accident. I opened it back up and I had street names and other things like gas stations etc. I live in a prety rural area too.
Hope everything works out for you. |
Re: no street names on Map application
What view are you in? I don't believe street names are ever shown in 3D view. And in overhead view you have to zoom down very low before the names show.

Re: no street names on Map application
My N810 Map application also displays without street names.
I have not been able to discover a way to make them display. I have not used the N810 in the car as of yet. |
Re: no street names on Map application
It's pretty silly how far you have to zoom in to get street names :(

Re: no street names on Map application
I have TomTom mobile on my Nokia N80 mobile phone and it shows street names in every mode and you can even zoom out really far. Wayfinder is not really good software, quite "basic". I am not gonna buy license.

Re: no street names on Map application
When I was out using the GPS today with the N810, street names were visible even way far out like 200-400 yards. Then sometimes they would be blank or some streets might not be named at all but only major routes and highways were.
I know at first when I fired up the GPS and all I saw were road lines and rivers I was kinda appaled. But after I drove arround a bit and relaunched and resyned my GPS I found that I had some street names and even places like gas stations were being found that werent visible the first time I turned it on. |
Re: no street names on Map application
I'm hoping the author of maemo-mapper will figure out a way to use the Wayfinder maps in his app, but with better display of street names.

Re: no street names on Map application
ive tried every which settin, i find this app useless. hopefully next update or the subcription service makes this a app you can use.

Re: no street names on Map application
Yep as it is, it is pretty useless...street names are shown only in 2D and if you zoom it a lot (that is you loose the "catch" of where you are).
Only useful thing is it shows you POIs. But I would have liked at least a small arrow for the one-way roads (as in google maps). And if I want to go to a POI of interest, I may not mind the turn by turn directions, but at least an arrow pointing at the POI itself! (this could be a nice addition to Maemo Mapper). |
Re: no street names on Map application
I don't have a N810 but a N800 with a Nokia navigation kit. In auto zoom mode, street names are speed dependent, If I remember correctly. When driving slowly, you can see them, when driving faster you can't.
May not be the same on the N810. |
Re: no street names on Map application
I just got my n810 and it is pretty good tool. However, when i tried the GPS - it only shows your position along the road but it doesn't tell you how to get to my destination. so, If I take a wrong turn, it doesn't guide you to your destination...it simply shows where you are on the map...am I doing something wrong? or do you have get wayfinder subscription? Unfortunately, if I have to get a subscription, then I will return my n810 since one of the main reason I purchased it was for the GPS & WIFI (WIFI is great!). Any comments/suggestions?
One more point, when you want to change your "home city" it doesn't have "Toronto, Canada" as an option. It has other Canadian cities but not Toronto. |
Re: no street names on Map application
ara178, you need wayfinder subscription for that feature on the map app that comes with the device. You can bring up the menu for it by clicking the right hand side of the map. I tried to use the trial but I got some weird error.
The home city thing is anyoing. I live close to Albany NY, and that wasn't even on the list. It seems only certain select major cities are on the list. But at least they cover all the time zones, which I think is the base idea of that thing. |
Re: no street names on Map application
Thanks Karwee. The device lock to the GPS pretty quickly but, unfortunately, it is not a REAL GPS as advertised. Otherwise, it is does everything else very well. I don't want to spend another $130 every 3yrs to just get directions - given the prices for GPS systems these days (in low $100 with voice guide) - it is really sad that Nokia want ppl to pay for something so basic. since many people don't want to carry a separate GPS, an N810 and a phone. This may hurt them and many may stay away from N810.
The Home City is very annoying...Toronto is a major city! they should have included it. They have got much smaller cities. |
Re: no street names on Map application
I've used both the Wayfinder application and Maemo Mapper pretty extensively. As of now, Maemo Mapper is the only option. It's both useable and feature rich.
For actual navigation, consider Maemo Mapper strictly. If you are in a jam and need to find a WiFi hotspot, go with Wayfinder.... |
