Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
hi
id like to know which is the best software to use the n800 as a PIM? thanks |
Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
Currently that is probably the GPE Pim suite though synchronisation is rather unreliable at present.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
isnt it better to use sites like google calender and "remember the milk" direct instead of ending up in the syncronization swamp.

It hardly satsifies the "Bob, what are you doing next tuesday morning?" type queries. The Palm was so good at this - one button press to see my calendar. |
Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
Well, Date Book, which is built-in in Garnet VM could do the trick, if it's Palm behaviour you want. The Calendar app in my Palm T3 is the main reason I'm still carrying it around. But I don't synch, I carry the T3 all the time so there wouldn't be any use.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
GPE calendar and GPE todo did not meet my needs. So, after years of using a Palm, I'm trying to use an online calendar. Yahoo! Calendar works well. It loads quickly and entering events and tasks is quick and easy. Save the page (daily, weekly, event list, whatever) for offline viewing. I paid $20 to get rid of the ads.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
When was the last time you tried GPE calendar and todo? They've improved a lot recently - the 2.8 release was good, and the nightly builds since then are also very good. I've synced it with my desktop, with the instructions linked in my signature ( http://cleardefinition.com/page/Sync...d_GPE_on_N800/ ). Works great for me, though of course YMMV.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
the GPE ToDo program crashes in OS 2008 when you try to create categories.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
File a bug - that way it can get fixed.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
I use GPE calander to read my Google Calander using ICAL.
But I don't seem to be able to get GPE to upload to Google Calendar - is this possible? |
Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
While GPE Calendar and Todio and GPESummary also work on their own (with a few vrashed - as mentioned when creating categories in Todo), UI cant seem to be able to import the Calendar exports from my Zaurus, or either the contacts from my Zaurus addressbook. Both the imports fail.
Hence right now GPE Contacts is stiiing there blank since I dont want to enter all my contact details by hand again. Note : on my Zaurus I was using KDE PIM - i.e. KaPi and KoPi |

I would be grateful if you could quickly check if the new version can do bi-weekly events - the last time I checked it couldn't (and I de-installed it, or I would just upgrade. It had a name colllision with another app I used too so I'm hesitating a bit.) For repeats, my Palm Calendar can do:

Thanks guys, I wondered what erminig was for.
Installing it now. |
Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
You could use Garnet VM and run the palm PIM software.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
Nobody tried programs from
http://home.cfl.rr.com/genecash/nokia/debs ? They need python, no sync, everything simple but with a first class user experience, really great! After three days of usage my calendar and todo are full populated... |

the password manager "zsafe" indespensible. Do you have any experience with porting Zaurus apps to the Nokia...or know of anyone who's ported kapi/kopi? I have already built Qt 4.3.3 within Scratchbox, and Qtopia is next. This process makes me very aware that I am not a very good software developer...while I it is just possible that I will be able to get kdepimpi to recompile on the Nokia, I strongly doubt that I'll ever get to truely porting them to use the Hildon environment. I'd be extremely grateful for any help or suggestions that you have. |

http://home.cfl.rr.com/genecash/nokia/index.html scroll down and find the 'patch-dirs' package. Install it, it should work. Afterwards, you can also remove it. |

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
FWIW, I tried to install the Gene Cash apps to OS2008 and they won't work. I even wrote off to the dev and asked for an update to OS2008... He replied that he didn't have plans of upgrading his N800 to the new OS yet. Maybe if more people requested the update?

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
A KDE (QT) app can never be fully Hildon-ized, since Hildon is GTK+, unless the app is ported from QT to GTK. The best you can do with getting those apps on Maemo is a) just getting QT over, and putting up with them maybe looking/acting weird or b) ditching Maemo/hildon completely for a desktop KDE - I know there are folks who have done that.
|
Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
There's certainly no technical reason that a QT app couldn't sit and interoperate relatively well in the Hildon Desktop, i.e. hidden, drop-down menus, proper theming etc.
It's just a question of whether it's worth it. |
Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
What is the final opinion on a good PIM to use?

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
In their current state GPE, erminig and Notecase do it for me. Google Calendar sync works well and I use the Nokia mail ap, modest, to access Gmail. As an Ubuntu user I've the additional advantage that GPE and Notecase run there as well with data base compatibility. There was some data entry to get started but now everthing works pretty smoothly for me. Hopefully one day there will be a package like Erminig that will sync Google Contacts with GPE.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
I use an almost completely CLI environment on my laptop, my "other computer". I use mutt for email, remind for my calendar application, abook for contacts etc.. I find that with a little bash, perl and what not GPE on n800 is simple enough to "sync" the info. I care about between my working environments. To each there own :D, that is my comment.

Re: Best software for using the n800 as a PIM?
@happymonkey: So, how do you sync? Can you elaborate more on that? I was about to use offlineimap (python) to sync my mail, but I discovered Claws Mail doesn't read maildirs.
I'd love to have mutt on the N810, found a .deb but doesn't work. |
