tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
Anyone have any insight on if this is possible? I am all but sold on buying an N810 but would love to leverage my unlimited data plan that work pays for.

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
It works flawlessly for me... I am using OS2008 with my N800 and a BB8830.

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
8830 is Sprint? Good to know you go it working but I am concerned I might have difficulties with T-Mobile. Are you on a corporate data plan?

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I am using T-Mobile's 4.99 Unlimited Data plan. It's not the quickest bunny in the pack, but it works.

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I was only asking specifically about the model number because the 8830 is the world phone edition for either sprint or verizon. tmobile's is 8800 straight up. But if you say that you have the t-mobile data plan, that clears it up. At least enough for me to run out and buy this immediately. Being able to leverage my 8800 unlimited data connection makes the N810 unparalleled. The iTouch can not touch the N810 in my book. Of course, I say this without ever having put my hands on the 810. :)

As for speed, engadget says that next week T-Mobile is making a big announcement. They might finally be releasing HSDPA service... and since none of their current phones is 3g capable, I'm holding off on buying anything until after the announcement. |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
Sprint and Verizon have been known to pull shenanigans with non-audio Bluetooth services on their devices.
I would suggest you make certain that your operator doesnt cripple the Bluetooth by checking in on Howard Forums in the BlackBerry discussion group, or on BlackBerryForums.com. |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I did find this:
http://www.blackberrycool.com/2007/07/19/005156/ where someone was able to tether their macbook pro to a t-mobile BB 8800 using what seems to be a similar script as I've seen folks here have to edit on their N800/N810. |

My understading is that the "Tmobile Web" is for connecting to web servers only, so ports 80 and 443 should be fine. But, in order to not violate your terms of service, if you want to connect to other ports (say, ssh from your tablet to an ssh server), you'd need the "total internet" package. Some ports to try: ssh, imap, imaps, smtp, imap, imaps, pop, spop or, try to skype from your tablet. |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
Kilmar,
Did you have to go through any special steps to do the tether or was it straight forward? The reason I got picky about the model number was that I can't find a T-Mobile Blackberry unlimited web plan for $5. |

If you have a Blackberry, you have a BlackBerry data plan, otherwise the PIN network cannot be used -- you need to be on the right data plan or you do not get email. Ergo, unless T-Mobile has totally broken their BlackBerry Internet Plan like they did a couple of years ago. When they did that, they only let you reach web ports, blocked SSH, and blocked most IM networks (my XMPP server, for example) |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I have a T-mobile blackberry curve 8320 and no luck whatsoever tethering. I know several people have had the same problem. I am going to purchase a nokia N95 just so I can tether with my n810. I love this tablet!

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I was able to tether my N800 to my 8700g on T-Mobile last night, but one problem: it work for *one* connection. Once I disconnect, I can't reestablish a data connection unless I power cycle the phone (pull the battery.)

If anyone has managed to reliably connect to a BB from N810, can you please post your detailed setup here? My understanding is that there is something funky about BB's implementation of bluetooth DUN. Only windows PCs work reliably. Mac users have to use a special modem script. Is there an equivalent of such a modem script for N810? |

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I have problem tethering through bluetooth to BB 8800 even from XP (using IVT BlueSoleil 2.6 driver); however tethering to BB 8800 works fine after switching to native XP driver (on the same hardware) following this guide: http://www.blackberryforums.com/blue...-adapters.html.
This indicate problem is in driver and if someone is able to figure out how to emulate XP bluetooth native driver on N800 / N810; it should fix problem tethering to BB for good. |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I have been able to tether my n810 to my BB for quite a while now. I have the unlimited corporate data plan.

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
following is my finding with various bluetooth combinations:
- N810 + Sony Ericsson z310i => works - XP + Sony Ericsson z310i => works - N810 + BB 8800 => failed - XP + IVT 2.6 driver + BB 8800 => failed - XP + native driver + BB 8800 => works anyone successfully tether N810 + BB 8800 (firmware v4.2.1.101)? I upgraded N810 to diablo yesterday but still no luck. Any pointer is appreciated. thanks |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
I am using version 4.2.1.74 and I can tether my n810 to my t-mobile BB 8800 fine in addition to os X and default xp drivers...

Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
My BB pearl did not work reliably for tethering with 4.2 on the 8100. The tablet (both 800 and 810) could connect to the phone but actually getting data loaded from the internet was hit or more often miss. I could get a web to load if I hit reload often enough.
Once I upgraded the 8100 to 4.5 tethering on 800 and 810 with chinook worked just fine and was very stable. I am now on a 8310 (4.5 OS) on T-MO with Diablo on both my 800 and 810 and tethering is still working just fine. |
Re: tethering to a BB 8800 (T-Mobile)
finally get N810 tether to BB 8800 working after upgrading BB 8800 to the latest 4.5 firmware, thanks rone and dubiousmike
