|
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
pretty cool :) I don't have a USB drive to test it though :(
I love all the little tricks people are able to do on the N8x0's |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Neat hack, but what sort of practical use ? :-)

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Oh come on! :)
DVD on the tablet ? It can't be that powerful, can it ? I would actually use it to burn files on a CD/DVD, but I have a PC for that (and the tablet as a USB drive).. on the move it can be useful some times... |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
I am working on a cdburning app, as this would make backups nice and easy. As for the DVD movies?? Not sure, I will try to play unencrypted DVD when I get home. Seems like it should work, I'm not thinking encrypted DVD's have a chance in hell.
I keep all my music and pictures on DVD, which now makes copying to n800 a little faster. :D |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Really ? Faster than copying from DVD to SD card on the PC ?...
|
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
DVD playback has no chance. (Although I admit I always like to be stunned when technology exceeds expectations)

When I can plugin my n800 into a DVD and copy away. I have a IBM Tablet PC (Dual boot windows and linux) also which accepts the SD card, and I have a USB DVD burner that I could plugin. (same one I use with n800) Here are some of my problems though: Ubuntu 6.1xx has the same SD corruption bug that was fixed by kernel patch on 2007 OS. If I try to copy large amounts of data, it corrupts the card. ( Is this fixed in 7.1) maybe I should upgrade Additionally I am booting from SD and do not like to USB transfer, I have had problems in the past, with rebooting I have read access to my ext2 partitions under windows, but no write access. So often I would transfer using SCP over the network, the encryption slows the data transfer down. In short: YES its faster (For Me) |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
well, you can bring a DL DVD with MPEG4 movies and a ROM with u in some trip =) Neat hack!
|
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
so... has anyone compiled mplayer with dvd support and tried playing a dvd yet? :)
I wouldn't expect it to work well, but the geek in me wants to see anyway. |

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Maybe u also want to play HD-DVD?)
|
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
The main exciting thing for me is the ability to carry and play my collection of music and .avi's with me everywhere. This is really great. Why the hell do u need DVD-playback - really dunno ))

1st - n8x0 has a small screen 2nd - i highly doubt it could ever work. 3rd - without a video out HDDVD is useless unless you are using it for DATA.... now there's a good idea lol |

Most certainly for a penguin it must be -- but I'm a seagull :-)

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Never feed the seagulls, damn rats with wings ;)
OK, so I got home and loaded up the DVD in the player. I have a DVD that is unencrypted. (Grateful Dead - New Years Eve, the closing of winterland 12/31/73) Great show by the way,but I digress. OK, so I mounted the DVD, udf fs used mplayer and picked a vob file and hit play. It played, well sort of :) It played the audio well enough to listen the concert, but the video appears to be at 1 or less frames per second. BTW: Mplayer ran at 100% :) I think it could be possible to make a optimized player for unencrypted dvd's, but prolly not likely to be done. Still CD and DVD access is pretty cool |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Just curious, does the DVD/CDROM you use have to be powered separately, or will this power off the N800?
|
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
My usb dvd player requires 110v power

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Very cool, thanks fo figuring this out and posting the how to.
I got a Mini usb to 'female' USB with a recent digital picture frame purchase. I tried a flash drive, but forgot to mount it and gave up. I feel dumb now. Any guess for required modules or command line for the mount? |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Would someone please check the wiki to make sure it is right.
http://internettablettalk.com/wiki/i...SB_CDROM_Drive Penguinbait, hope you don't mind me just coping your post. thanks Nrune |

Perhaps someone wants to turn them into a deb, with a script to load them on boot. I will happily make the script and tarball,if someone will volunteer to turn it into a deb, and even perhaps put it in the repo? Let me know, someone PM me if you want to help out with this |

[QUOTE=penguinbait;102277]Download the modules
http://penguinbait.com/modules.tar Hi. This is great. But... what about an USB hard drive ? Is there any chance the trick could be similar ? XooH |

"In order for the n800 to enter into host mode you need to flash the N800 to OS 2008 and obtain the correct adapter. What is required is a USB A (Female) to USB Mini-B (Male) OTG cable (sometimes called a OTG convertor cable)." Is it really all ? (on n800) Do someone cheked it on n810 ? If yes, it really rocks ! |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
That is my understanding from this thread. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...light=usb+host
bad news is that the n810 has a diffrent usb port and may not work. nrune |

Attachment 634 Penguinbait actually made a deb, what is the world coming to? |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Thanks, just had a need for this so i searched and found this and works perfect.
I'm not using cdrom but I built a program called isomaster which creates/extracts iso and nero nrg images, but mount didnt know how to read iso9660... now it does :) If anyone else has a need for this you can download the isomaster build from : http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...er-1.3.all.deb I guess time will tell if having iso image capabilites is of any use for me, but if you do something like offline wikipedia (1-4 gb) it would take forever to copy as thousands of files, so packaging into a single iso image would be much faster and manageable. Thanks for the driver! |

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
Penguinbait,
Awesome! I have USB Host mode through osso status bar. This little app makes that app even more powerful. Way to go Penguinbait. :) Dan |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
this dont work for me :-(
I have old DVD-Rom from IBM x21. (sorry, for my bad english) /home/user # mount /dev/scd0 /root/mnt -t iso9660 mount: mounting /dev/scd0 on /root/mnt failed /home/user # mount /dev/scd0 /root/mnt -t udf mount: mounting /dev/scd0 on /root/mnt failed |
Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
smman - did you load all the modules? cdrom.ko, sr_mod.ko, isofs.ko, etc.? Does the directory /root/mnt exist? What does "dmesg" say when typed at the terminal? Are you in host mode?

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS
You need to reset after installing the deb. I have no idea what else might be wrong, or if they are already mounted, which is why I asked what the output of dmesg was since that will give me more information. You need to have the drive attached with a CD already in it when you type the mount commands. If the CD takes too much power, you also need a powered hub. There are other possibilities, but generally dmesg will say if the device is recognized (it will either say something about power or found CD/DVD rom drive or something similar).
