Need Answers RE: the Storage Capacity of the N810

I am confused about the external storage capacity of the N810. My goal is purchase the largest SD card available that will work with the N810.

The Nokia book says supported cards are: "Mini SD and Micro SD with adapater." Neither is the high capacity card ("SDHC").

My limited understanding of storage cards is that above 2 GB they become "high capacity" cards, i.e., Mini SDHC or Micro SDHC. The Nokia says only that it accepts Mini and Micro SD cards -- not SDHC cards.

The Nokia card slot is MINI SD yet Amazon.com pushes the Sandisk 6GB Micro SDHC (high capacity) card for the N810.

Will it work? How can it? Its the wrong size and there is no adapter to the Mini size (you cannot have an adpter from SDHC to SD as they are different chip sets).

You would need an adapter to put a Micro SDHC card into a Mini SDHC slot and I do not believe that there is one (there are adapters when the card is not high capacity).

I guess I really do not care so much about the technical answer to all of this as much as someone telling me what is the largest card I can buy for the N810 that will actually work?

Very interested in a helpful response.

SDHC cards are the ones you want to purchase for the N810.

... as long as they are "mini" or "micro" size!

The N810 WILL NOT take a regular SD card!

Will the 6 GB Micro SDCD card work? How would it fit, the adapter provided is for regular SD size. They told me that the adapter to Mini SD wont work either because one card is SD and the other SDHC. I have never seen a SDHC to SDHC (micro to mini) adapter. HAVE YOU????

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Geeez WFT, chill out! The micro uses an adapter to make it the size of the mini. If you can find HC cards that are "micro", they will work using the adapter (mini sized)... make any sense?

The maximum size (physical size) of cards the N810 can use is the mini-SD.... and can use micro-SD cards with an adapter.

I took a deep breath, sorry.

The fundemental problem is we have two variables here:

mini + micro and
SD + SDHC

I know Micro and Mini can adapt as long as they are both SD. Presumably they could as well if they were both SDHC -- but I cannot find an adapter that does it. Without that, you cannot go above 2 GB becasue there is no adapting between SD and SDHC.

Does this make sense?

Seems to me you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Although I do not own an N810, it also seems to me that when you purchase a "micro" card that it will come with an adapter... if not, I will assume that the card that comes with the 810 probably has an adapter with it. An adapter is just that... an adapter. Seems to me that the adapter has nothing to do with whether the card is HC or not... its just an adapter.

does anyone know when the 8gb micro cards will be released?

No the N810 doesn't come with a micro to mini SD adapter. You can go on ebay and find them ( ~ $0.99 + shipping ) or SanDisk sells a 1 GB micro SD kit that comes with one ~ $20 at Staples, Officemax, etc.

Here's my understanding of the situation, based on another thread <http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11695>;

The N810 takes miniSD cards; you can use microSD cards with an adapter.

The adapters are functional with BOTH SD and SDHC cards - there is no difference between adapters (they just change the size/shape from micro to mini/regular).

The N810 can use both SD- and SDHC-format cards (but in mini and, with adapter, micro size - no full size cards).

While my N810 hasn't arrived yet (developers delay list :)), I don't believe there are any card adapters included. Look on the link above to find stores that sell adapters. They're cheap, and can convert microSD to mini, full-size, and even Sony MemoryStick Duo. And, you can convert full-size SD to Compact Flash. That should cover everything!

Hope that helps. It sure helped me.

Having been buying a mix of Sd to microSD cards for a couple of years here's some pointers for us 810 owners:
1. It seems the market for SDHC is jumping from SD to microSD, only a few mfg.'s are making miniSDHC, SanDisk is skipping it.

2. Several mfg's sell complete "kits" with microSD, includes adapters for mini and standard

3. Keep a small pair of pliers (like on my Swiss Army geek knife) or tweezers to pull out the adapters, saves inventive cursing.

4. Look for the BUY's. Right now 4GB micro's and miniSDHC's are going for $50 up. Buy.com has a 4GB mini on sale for $24 with free shipping. I just bought two more because I am presently FILLING my first one with maps for MaemoMapper. The only reason I limited myself to one the first time was to make sure they worked with my 810.

5. Look for buys - they seem to be cyclical, but within a month from the time you start looking the cycle will go thru and you will find some half off deals.

Now I'm looking for getting a nice 2.5" 1 TB external hooked up :)

Everyone, post links to adapters (micro-to-mini + mini-to-SD) that you find for sale in this thread. It won't be fun to always switch between micro cards with one adapter.

Re: Need Answers RE: the Storage Capacity of the N810

WFT: The simple answer is:
- The N810 can use _any_ capacity micro- or mini SD you can find.
- It'll need a micro-to-mini adapter for micro cards. One size (er, type) fits all here.

Re: Need Answers RE: the Storage Capacity of the N810

I probably am making too much out of this but it is more of a problem with my communication of the issue. My research shows that you cannot load a micro card that is SDHC (i.e., greater than 2 GB) into an mini SD adapter (non-SDHC). If that is true, you could not use a micro card greater than 2 GB which seems to make no sense. So it boils down to whether a micro SDHC can be used in a mini SD adapter? Right now I only have a 2 GB micro so I cannot make this determination.

The adaptor is just pins and wires, SDHC has to do with the addressing scheme, not the pinout.

Great, thanks for the answer. Had I just been more clear initially I could have saved everyone all the posts.
