Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I was browsing around on nokia's website today and happend to come upon a site pronouncing nokia and slingmedia's partnership to provide a slingplayer on the N95 http://www.slingmedia.com/go/nokia

I'm sure the N95 user base is larger than the internet tablets, but as the ITs become more mainstream I can't help but think it would make good business sense for sling media to provide a player for the IT. I know I would get a sling box in minute if I could watch it on my n810. Anyone else have similar thoughts?

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

well, i dont know much about slingbox, but it seems like its just streaming it, so i figure all you would need to do is set up the box output, and then a program to access the info, and you should have it, now, i'm not too sure, but i think it would be easliy possible for them now, but its the non-mainstreamness that kills the idea i guess

I have a slingbox and would love to see this. But the mixture of Linux and small sales means I don't think we'll see it for a while. :(

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I also have a Slingbox and really hope that either Slingmedia will market a player for the Nokia N series or someone will write/adapt an application to view the stream on the IT's. The latter is probably the more likely solution since SlingMedia doesn't seem interested in the IT's. In fact someone has written a small application to record Slingbox streams on PC's. It's very basic but works. It's open source, experimental, and is described by the author like this: "Provide an interface (sdk) to communicate with a Slingbox (Slingmedia) for creating custom Slingbox player program or some plugin for existing Media player (like VLC). Also Provide a sample application that can be use to record from Slingbox." See http://sourceforge.net/projects/slingboxsdk/

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I keep hoping that some linux guru with a Nokia tablet and a Slingbox will write an application to make this work. There have been two Slingers who have written small applications that activate and capture a Slingbox stream for the purpose of recording the stream on a remote pc/laptop. A variation of one application is actually a plug-in for vlc, a program which has been compiled for the N800. Will a maemo/vlc guru please check this out: http://www.benlo.com/slingbox/
Thanks!!

Oh man-- this would be HEAVEN on earth if the N810 had a SlingPlayer application!

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I really hope this gets done! I would love to have Sling on the IT. I really dont think Sling has any interest at all about doing it. I have written them several emails and the only reply I get is that its not in there current plans. That really sucks. I was even thinking of getting a Blackberry with no phone service, just so I could sling to it, but that would be a lot of wasted cash I think.
PLEASE, TELL ME SOMEONE IS WORKING ON THIS....
I have tried the Garnet VM applications on my N800, but just like everyone, it wont start the streem. I can look at my slingbox while I'm at home and see the N800 connect, but never get a video stream, even though the app says it is streaming. Then it just goes dead and takes me back to the main Garnet VM applications.

Is it possible to use a slingbox on your computer then remotely access it through your N800/N810? Are there software restrictions for that? Sorry for the noob questions.

What about HAVA? Isn't that the same thing? They have a player for n800. I'm sure people wouldnt want to get this though if they already have Slingbox though.

Though I gues sits still in beta?

I have the sling client on my N95 and MacBook Pro and it's near perfect and works like a charm.
Just wish they'd release a client for the N800/N810. Would make watching TV easier on the eyes.
I've even stood on the border of Iraq and Kuwait with a 3G signal and watched TV from a Slingbox located in NC, near-perfectly. Had to see BSG.

That's just...epic in so many ways.

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I can understand why you wouldn't want to invest in another slingbox type product like Hava's considering you already own the hardware to do streaming, but I just don't see slingbox investing in the Nokia internet environment unless it becomes financially worthwhile. I guess Hava believes it is worth it and I'm running their titanium wireless product using the N810 beta software. It's a polished product overall and I breezed through the installation and the setup. The picture quality is actually quite impressive on the Nokia. Still a few audio - video sync bugs to work out if you watch it for a period of time, but it's still in beta. Other than that, if you truly want streaming on your N800 or N810, then consider one of Hava's products.

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I concur, the HAVA is the way to go if you want to stream from your home media setup. I am using both HAVA and Slingbox on my current travel to Iceland and the beta HAVA player on my N800 is impressive as described above. The Slingbox works well on my laptop but I don't think there will ever be a Slingplayer version for Nokia tablets. Too bad.

Can you slingbox -> ORB on a (windows)PC?

Orb's user site is very IT friendly and offers many different video feeds. I don't have a slingbox so I wouldn't know if it's compatible.

Yeah you can, but then you're just using the Slingbox as a remote control. If you want to use a PC instead of a Slingbox, you would just need a capture card and IR blaster (included with some cards). I've been using Slingbox + VLC which works okay at home, but the dynamic compression scaling thing on the Slingbox makes it much more useful on-the-go (whereas VLC is a constant bitrate). The PC also sucks up a lot of power compared to a Slingbox.

I've talked to the people at Slingmedia several times about making a Maemo version of SlingPlayer Mobile. They haven't shot down the idea, but it's a low priority for them.

And let me second (or third) the positive comments about the HAVA player. It works amazingly well, and the large screen on my N810 makes watch TV a pleasant experience.

If you have an IT, I'd suggest you sell your Slingbox and get a HAVA.

If only I had two Slingbox Solos that I could sell for one Hava HD. :(

Re: Nokia has Slingplayer for N95, why not N800/810?

I think there's 2 reasons why Sling has an n95 client:

1) Orange or 3 in England bundled a slingbox and n95, and likely payed for development
2) The CEO of Sling Media is an n95 fan. He got to demo an early n95-3 a few months before it came out, showing off to Om Malik.

However, it has been rumored they are introducing a sling client for the iPhone. I could see a port to the Linux world at some point, but don't look for a GPL'd build. It does work in WINE now, but you have to load up some Windows Media player plug-ins.

Have you seen this news from early June? http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/08/s...le-for-iphone/

Regardless, Apple has to give Sling their blessing for an official iPhone client, and that hasn't happened yet.

Hi guys!
TD here from Monsoon, the makers of HAVA.
Yes, as has been pointed out, we have a great player for the N800/N810. It is going GM very soon now, but the latest beta is very solid already. If you haven't gotten it and you want to use it with your HAVA (or a new HAVA you would get because you want your home TV on your Tablet), point your browser to www.myhava.com/n8xxhava.
Also, we are just about to go pre-beta with our S60 client which offers a much more friendly user interface than Sling's S60 player, so now you will double-love HAVA (notwithstanding its advantages over Sling on the PC too...)
Enjoy!

TD

I'm very impressed with your product and have been enjoying it whenever I'm hooked up to wi-fi spot. Only wish the Titanium box had an off switch instead of having to pull the adapter out the unit gets quite hot and here in Vegas its passed 110 on the thermometer and at that temp even the A/C struggles to keep up. That makes for one toasty Hava box, so even though its well ventilated, I'm hoping the heat doesn't reduce the lifespan of the unit. Other than that, keep up the good work!!

Just wondering how the s60 player is progressing, and how well your system works with desktop Linux, specifically Ubuntu 8.10

A few days ago they released the web-based player on sling.com . I tried it out and it worked fine on Firefox on my PC. I think it only works on windows machines right now but maybe there is hope that whatever applet that runs in the browser could run on a N800 down the road?

How about more of us request support for slingbox on our tablets via feedback and maybe vote this thread up?

This thing has a browser right? Why not just go to sling.com ?

You can access your slingbox directly through their web site.

sling.com is basically hulu.com plus slingbox integration.

Does the browser support flash? Maybe that is the problem?

If you have too much money you could buy a TV card for the PC and use DVBViewer+Recording Service to stream the channels :p
I currently do that with the N95+CorePlayer, but I have no idea if it'll work for the N900.

Sling.com needs a plugin that only works in x86 computers. :(
