rDesktop for OS2008?

Is there a version of rDesktop yet for OS2008? I looked but couldn't seem to find one.

rdesktop is available in maemo.org extras repository (http://repository.maemo.org/)

The rdesktop for os2007 does not install on os2008 from the maemo site. I had to downrev my n800 back to os2007 to get rdesktop to work. So I'll ask the question again. Is there a version of rdesktop that works for os2008? Does it just need to be rebuilt? Anyone know?

rDesktop is working just fine in N800 with OS2008 installed.

Ok. That's great. Didn't work for me, it said unsupported OS. So if you don't mind, could you give a direct link where you found the binary? I got it from here.

Thanks for the link. Yes it's Remote Desktop for Windows hosts. You need to enable remote desktop access on your Windows machine. Plus you need a username/password. Only certain versions of XP/Vista support Remote Desktop. For example, XP Home does not.

If you run rdesktop from xterm, you can see what error is causing it to close.

Add me to the list of people who have rdesktop working just fine. I installed it from application manager, and it worked right away.

How about a rdesktop client for the Mac? The only one I can seem to find is a version from Microsoft. Anybody know how you would connect to the n800 from a Mac?

Usually I get a stack of log messages, but nothing specific as to why it closed (just a generic error). I've found it works sometimes, doesn't work others. Often it'll work if I log in as root (ssh root@0) then run rdesktop, and other times it'll work as user. The rdesk alternative mentioned in one of the other remote desktop threads always works, but it doesn't support the windowing environment on the tablet very well.

What you're looking for is vnc server running on the tablet (there is one, but I don't remember if it's in the repositories), and a vnc client on the mac.

Remote desktop involves a server (built into the operating system) running on the windows box and a client on the tablet.

I don't think there's a remote desktop server for Linux at all, much less for the tablet.

Re: rDesktop for OS2008?

I installed it and ran it several times before it finally worked properly. (It may have needed rebooting on both systems.) Then I found out I would be operating my XP desktop computer from my N800 with no virtual keyboard available. It's well worth the trouble just to see it function, although I can't think of any practical use for it right now.

Re: rDesktop for OS2008?

It's so frustrating. I just reloaded OS2008 and then reinstalled rdesktop from https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=214 , Version 0.4 installed successfully. Then when I launch it, it says it's loading, then it just goes away.

Someone suggested running under xTerminal. What is the command line syntax for that? I typed rdesktop and it complained about missing libraries. ./rdesktop doesn't work either. When I type ps, I don't see the app running. How do I debug this thing?

Very frustrating. This is a brand new n800 out of the box. All I have done is load OS2008, establish wireless connectivity, install Skype, install rdesktop. That's it!

rDesktop is the whole reason I bought this thing. And I have seen it work beautifully under OS2007.

Thanks for any help or advice anyone can give me.

Its very buggy on OS2008, works on and off for me.

I personally would like a new version with a checkbox for connecting to the console (-0 commandline). To be able to save connections in a list would be great too. For me its one of the most important programs!

Windows has its own on-Screen keyboard, search for it in Start/Programs/Accessories/*one of four folder*. My Windows is Finnish so I don't know about the English translation for those folders, but it's there somewhere :)

You could use Remote Connection Manager (grcm) with a command line rdesktop : it will keep a list for you ;)
I know it's not fully polished but it's available in maemo-extras ...

Fred

Edit : And I think the command line is somthing like rdesk -f -z <host> -u <user> -p <password>

In Vista under Accessories/Ease of Access is a virtual keyboard that works fine once you are Remoted into a Windows session. Under XP it's Accessories/Accessibility.

Me too. Yesterday I was able to launch it and app the disappeared. No Remote Desktop came up. Today, it worked. Nothing has changed with my network between attempts. This app is the reason I bought the n800, so I would really like to see this app be reliable. At least it would be nice to say why it doesn't connect before it just dissapears.

Re: rDesktop for OS2008?

I humbly disagree. I upgraded N800 to 2.2007.50-2 during Xmas and has been using rdesktop 0.4 since. It is much more responsive and snappier than the 2007Os. I have it connect to a winXP Prof, and then log into my company via citrix on the winXP Prof. On the 2007, it is always a drag, it works, but not smooth. It is eye blinking with the 2008. Why do I go thru rdesktop to citrix? That is the ONLY way!. There aint no citrix driver for the tablet. I talked to citrix, they are NOT interested.

Back to the rdesktop. When the winPC goes into screensaver, sometimes, not all the time, the tablet will NOT be able to wake up the PC. Problem solved screensaver on PC was turned off. After that, I have not run into even once, that the rdesktop is having problem

I'm using it to control my media center pc.. I have all my music on there, connected to hi-fi's in different rooms, and i can control the media center application anywhere in the house.. Media center's got an on screen "phone keypad" where you can tap it in like a text message (only really used for searching for tracks)

On my N810, the first time I use rdesktop after a reboot, it works fine. Any subsequent uses (without rebooting first) results in a "Bad Window" error, as reported in xterm if I start rdesktop from there. This happens to multiple servers. Any ideas?

This is really pretty neat. I just VPN'd into my ASA with vpnc GUI and successfully Remote Desktop'd into my PC! I had my doubts, but some people obviously have done a lot of work-- many thanks!

download the command line only utility and use...it works every time. Use google and search for the different command options.

Which ip address are you trying to connect to? The one your router assigns to your computer - 192.168.1.149 or something to that affect? Or the IP that your ISP gives you

Make sure you are not logged on to your Windows XP Box

If you have a router try forwarding the IP address of your N800

I have successfully RDP'd into my Windows XP Home box from my own home network as well as from Panera Bread

Im off to work. I'll check back later

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm a sysadmin, so I'm talking abouut getting into my Windows servers, which I can easily do using mstsc or MacOS clients. (Also, before you get the wrong idea, please know that I'm a Linux admin; Windows is unfortunately a necessary evil for me :( (VMware VirtualCenter))

Re: rDesktop for OS2008?

digisage, if your server is running windows server 2003 then it probably has rdp 6 (which vista also has).

On Vista, i need to go into remote desktop and 'Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)' instead of default higher security option using network level authentication. This added security was put in for RDP 6.0 (winserver2003/vista) and the open source rdesktop client does not support that (yet?) Since microsoft built the mac version i guess that version is kept up to date with security of rdp 6.

Also the command line build i did supports -0 option to connect to server console (if thats what your trying to do)

I had to do a couple of things to get rdesktop to successfully and reliably connect with my windows 2003 servers-

On the server go to- Administrative Tools->Terminal Services Configuration. In the 'General' tab I set it at-
Security Layer-> RDP Security Layer
Encryption Level-> Client Compatible

Under the 'Logon Settings' I've set it to 'use client provided logon information' to prevent having to type the user/password twice.

On the tablet, set it to use 8bpp color depth or it'll crash on logon...

At this point it would work 'sometimes'

To get it working consistently I had to create an ssl certificate and install it, then on the same tab of the Terminal services configuration window, set terminal services to use that certificate.

That in mind, it works every time now. (I regularly connect to 5 Windows/SBS 2003 servers and 2 Windows 2000 servers this way for work...)

hope this helps,
kernelpanic

p.s.- there is something with the rdesktop maemo package where once you've crashed by not setting 8bpp, you may need to reboot the tablet to get it to successfully start.

<EDIT> I've compiled the debian etch rdesktop1.5 package for armel and installed it on my tablet. and 16bpp works. (but it's not hildonized. i.e.- once minimized you can't restore the window, hardware keys don't work so '-f' must be specified on the command line, etc...) But it looks as if most of the issues (aside from ecnryption settings) are specific to the maemo port... </EDIT>

Weird workaround for official rDesktop@OS2008

I don't know how and why, but it works

The connection is made reliably all the times if and only if data are being exchanged between my n810 and the AP the very moment I press the ok button at the logon screen of rdesktop (Connection Details window).

To ensure this, I press the play button at the "internet radio" applet just before I press the ok button at rdesktop, in order to be sure the ok button will be pressed while internet radio is buffering.

I also tried pressing ok btn while pinging or loading a "heavy" web page. In these cases, it succeeds ocasionally. On the other hand, if you have continous data flow (radio buffering or ftp) it never crashes !

I had a really old linksys (B) wap11 version 2.2 and it did not work with the n810, I now have a netgear that A/B/G and I dont have the problems anymore.

If you have a really old AP, maybe consider upgrading?

Re: rDesktop for OS2008?

Originally, I posted this in the NEWBIE section - But figured having it posted here would gain more traffic;

Be gentle...

So I finally took the plunge and bought a new n810 Let me lay a quick foundation for you on my background with Linux based system; None. With that said, thank god for the internet and these forums... heh. ive been able to quickly learn the general functions and messed around with xterm. After days of reading, I finally got the courage to install rdesktop.

Awesome app, I downloaded rdesktop from the maemo repository site. I believe it was ver 0.4. After running once, I ran into the same problems other users reported - it wouldnt open anymore. So, I downloaded ver 1.5 which is xterm or cmd based (is this the right term). I am able to successfully log in to my desktop or laptop computer when using the router assigned IP i.e. 192.168.1.4
I'm using the command ; rdesk -f -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD 192.168.1.4

So now that I have successfully logged in via my wireless network. I decided to try and connect to it via using an EVDO Bluetooth connection via my paired treo 700p (w/ PAM hack) and n810. I have opened the default port of 3389 (assigned by windows) via my router and assigned "Public IP" to the IP my isp issues. I Believe I have everything setup correct but when I try to connect using either of two cmds below, I receive the same error;
rdesk -f -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD MY.IP.ADDY
rdesk -f -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD MY.IP.ADDY:3389

1. It will give me an error that says ERROR: connect: No route to host

or

2. Autoselected keyboard map en-us and then just lock up there...

When i re-run the command to try and connect I can see data being sent on my treo but after a couple of minutes it stops and goes inactive...

So my question is... Is my phone not allowing me to connect because it cannot do UDP TCP via 3389 ? or is the EVDO connection just too slow to allow a usuable rdesktop enviornment ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Just so you know I have not been able to try connecting via another Wireless connection not of my own... maybe I can walk the neighborhood for an unsecure connection to see if I can connect ?

If this helps any I am currently setup on Verizon FiOS here in California, my router is in Actiontec
