How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
Exactly how does one use unzip in OS2008?
Is there no GUI style unzipper availablle for the IT, as all I could find were some references to use the unzip program through X-term. If this is the only way to use it could someone please post some detailed instructions on how to unzip a file which is currently residing on my removable mem card, thanks in advance. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
This is another important piece that we need.
Maybe the folks at Winzip could do something?:) |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
Somewhere in the forum there was a mention made of an as-of-yet non-functional File Manager menu for unzipping. I also read that a developer had planned on a basic GUI for unzip but didn't promies anything soon. The reference to this unzip menu was vague though and I didn't really figure out where it could supposedly be found. People in the thread seemed to disagree on the existence and function of the menu anyway. Also, I don't remember which version this was about, so it's probably irrelevant now.
Note: I was a little high while reading that thread amongst a dozen others, but that's the hazy jist of it. If you find the thread it may clear some things up. But new information from people who actually know what they're talking about is welcome over an old, vague thread linked to by a newb. So, yea, I'd like to know more about this too. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
I just found this: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=13163
Only for 2007 now, but at least it's a current project, so maybe it'll get some momentum to show up for OS2008 and have a GUI built. The multi-format support of 7-zip is key and pretty much makes me forget about using unzip/zip in the future. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
Sorry for the third consecutive post, but the quick answer to your question is to type "unzip -h" in the console to get the options. For basic unzipping I don't think any modifiers are needed, so just "unzip filename" as far as I know. Verbose mode can be helpful though.
(Having flashbacks to the 90's and pkunzip in DOS, my last command-line experience.) |

at a command line (dos prompt for Win Users) unzip -x filename. As for a gui. There was one with 2007, the author hasn't yet ported it to 2008. The better comand line version is the 7zip (another thread in apps forum) |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
To unzip stuff in OS2008, install zlib-bin (may need to use the red pill for this). This gives you minizip and miniunzip. Works fine from the command line.

Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
I saw unzip in the installable application list and remembered a time in ITOS2007 when I double clicked a zip file from file manager and selected the unzip app from the open with window.

Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
How about a program that can unrar files? I have been using transmission for os2008 and get a lot of .rar files that I can not extract.

I need people testing this unzip version (attached).
With this version you will be able unzip files from the filemanager in OS2008. I have applied the patch that Danny sent me for the bora version, modifying it for chinook. I don't have now any tablet with OS2008 so I cannot testing this. What I want to know mainly is if it works :) and if the item is showed in the menu (it shouldn't be showed). This menu is useless (it does nothing) but it's necessary for the function. It's not perfect since you won't know when the file has been unzipped totally, but I will look for some solution for it, though my knowledge of C doesn't give for anymore yet. |

Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
I have installed the unzip_5.52-11_armel.deb and tested on the N810 (OS2008). ZIP file can be uncompressed from the filemanager! Thank you.
I have attached the screenshots on my blog. |

My only dislike is that it is set to delete the original zip file after the decompression. Any way to change that? tia. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
Oh, yes. The original patch delete the zip files. I changed it for OS2007 version, but I forgot to change it for the OS2008 version.
Anyway, now I have a n810 so I will upload a new version to extras repository soon. Thanks. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
hi, i'm trying to extract an x-rar file that came with a password ( i have xarchiver, unzip, and unrar installed, os2008). when i doubleclick on the file and thereby open xarchiver,
the password line in the dialogue is always grayed out, and i get a message "incorrect password" in the command line output. how do i enter the password to extract the file? thanks! |

Just curious if the problem is in the unrar or the xarchiver side. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?

open xterm navigate to folder with the rar using cd type: Code:
unrar e -p filename.rar If you just type: unrar you will see more details on unrar's usage. hope it helps. |
Re: How to use Unzip in OS2008 ?
are you trying to turn me into a linux expert? but seriously, thanks a lot! i already deleted the .rar file but i'll save these instructions for the future.

I just love when all fail, one can open immediately the terminal and make things happen with a simple line of code. For me, that's the real power of gnu/linux. BTW, I've test it by creating a passworded rar in a windows system and then run the command in my N800 and all worked fine. It asks the password twice. I'm off to sleep now but I'll try to remember to fill a bug against xarchiver on the first chance. |
