File Manager
Which file manager do you use and why?
What are the pros and cons of the ones you know? |
Re: File Manager
I just started using canoe (0.2.0) written by pancake@phreaker.net (that's in the About Credits). Pretty sure its on Maemo.org, but search this board if need be.
I was looking for a filemanager because the one on board (with OS2007), is awful, and useless for an advanced task. It pretty much has *nothing* to do with actually working with folders and directories, and is more of a media catalog than a file manager. Canoe definitely shows what the actual folder/directory structure is. It isn't perfect (lacks a search feature), but it'll do in a pinch. It's pretty much amazing that I haven't found a filemanager where I can say, find my opera.ini file (or whatever). Unfortunately, I have spent way too much time at the terminal/command-line level for tasks that should have been handled at a higher level. I'm hoping, after the new year, to contribute to the community in that respect, by writing a front end (probably in phython, hopefully cobbled together from some existing stuff), that will abstract out the linux-ie things, and have an updatable database of Internet Tablet specific command line scripts. |
Re: File Manager
Canoe can be found at http://maemo.lancode.de if needed. Don't know if it has been ported to OS2008 yet.

Re: File Manager
More info on current and up-coming OS2008 file managers is welcome. There must be some things on the horizon. Some ports, at least.
|
Re: File Manager
I would like to see something more also.
I read that gpe filememanager now has a flag to show hidden files. I have not been able to figure out what that flag is though. I liked canoe in the past. On the lastest 0s2008 on my n800 the display has changed and I find it a lot more challenging to use. I can go to the terminal to do what I need but that is much less convenient. |
Re: File Manager
I've been using emelFM2 It's great! :D
|
Re: File Manager
At OS2007 ive been using Canoe and i really liked it. Its simple to use, consumes very little space and it works great.
But in OS2008 i cant get Canoe to works, it complains about libdbus 1.2 is missing because OS2008 includes 1.3 instead of 1.2. Because of this im currently using emelfm2 which works good but i prefer Canoe. Have anybody gotten Canoe to work on OS2008? |
Re: File Manager
I have it working on 0s2008. I had to do an apt-get for the libdbus-1-2 after adding the bora repository.
Some of the previous challenges I had with it not displaying correctly have not happened after a re-install of canoe. |
Re: File Manager
rone,
Could you link to which repository you used or to the .deb file? I tried to find it but i failed. |
Re: File Manager
If you go to http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php and add Maemo Bora you should then be able to do an "apt-get install libdbus-1-2" in a terminal window
|
Re: File Manager
Thanks alot, ill try it in a few days when i get hold of my N800 again :).

Re: File Manager
This script seems to take care of the dependencies for bora:
http://austinche.name/maemo/compat-os2007.sh More info: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/maemo/users/31212 (Has this script been discussed in this forum?) |
Re: File Manager
i am using emelfm2. it seems good so that i dont have to use xterm to copy files etc. but all i can do is really browse with it. wtf is up with permissions when i want to copy a file it says "cannot create file /usr/blah/blah/blah.file - permission denied" or when i want to delete somthing it says "cannot delete /usr/wmafsa/wa.s - Permission denied"
i have installed become root and i was able to copy my file through xterm but i want to use emelfm2. i am using an n810 ,os2008 |
Re: File Manager
You need to be logged in as root to edit/create files in any directory other than /home/user. Try lauching emelfm from the terminal as root.
|
Re: File Manager
Ahh yes ditto cakey
You can do that with emelfm2 but you have to do the same thing.... open xterm sudo gainroot emelfm2 launching emelfm2 that way will run it with full root permissions, so use carefully. |
Re: File Manager
i second Queen on emelFM2 , works perfectly
|
Re: File Manager
how can i make it so i can start up emelfm2 in root with out having to type it in xterm everytime.

Re: File Manager
im not sure if i did it right.
i got step 1 but step 2 took a bit to comprehend i went to /usr/local/lib/emelfm2 i didnt know what you meant by "if not being run by root" i was running root emelfm2 to edit the file in the first place. but i put the code in to the script. i saved and rebooted my n810 and then i ran emelfm2 again and well so far i just have had to delete some things which i am able to do now. but the emelfm2 i am running doesnt look like the emelfm2 i would be running while in root. (gui looks like the normal one). so im still unsure if i have done it right. |

As for the script, it needs to check to see if 'root' is running it, because the 'sudo' doesn't work (emelfm2 doesn't run) if run by 'root'. I just went around the problem, because I'm not familiar enough with sudo to know how to resolve it. |
Re: File Manager
Thanks for info, after seeing emel script i realized i wanted this too.
Since this gives emelfm2 power to let you mess up your system, i'd only recommend for advanced users, but you can also do this : Edit (as root) /etc/sudoers and add : user ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL (if you want user 'user' to sudo anything) -or- user ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/emelfm2 (minimum i think... didnt test) Then edit (as root), the /usr/share/applications/hildon/emelfm2.desktop and set the exec line to read : Exec=sudo /usr/bin/emelfm2 That should launch emelfm2 as root. Edit : Fixed sudo line as pointed out by qwerty12 below |
Re: File Manager
Sorry for the bump but this is urgent.
I can tell that you didn't test the sudoers line: user ALL = NOPASSWD: run-standalone.sh /usr/bin/emelfm2 because it should be : user ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/run-standalone.sh /usr/bin/emelfm2 If it doesn't have usr/bin; then sudo is f*****. It will not run any program that needs root (app manager etc) and you cannot edit /etc/sudoers as user  I fixed thanks to "delaroca's" non deb version of plink which connected to my ssh server running on my n800. |
Re: File Manager
Gotta love fault tolerance... glad you were able to reboot the mars rover :) I updated lines above - thanks

Re: File Manager
PCManFM would be awesome on the IT's, and it's lighter than Emelfm2. (btw, emelfm, the original, would also be great).
And as it's a GTK app, would it be too hard to port? edit: GTK+1 emelfm, Debian Sid armel package works on the IT's, with a few UI glitches (preference dialogues). Like XMMS one has to start it with LC_MESSAGES=C LANG=C otherwise the dialogues' text will be empty. |
Re: File Manager
Cough cough
Forget about this post :) |

************************************************** ******* How do I access root mode? when emelfm2 ask for a command, i enter >> sudo gainroot then it loads x Terminal and ask me for a password....and I don't know it. I never created 1. Please Help |
Re: File Manager
Why it is that some files in the file manager that I try to move to other folders are set as read only and I can't move or copy them? Are they locked that I have to use xterm and be root to copy or move them? Cause I have created some note files that now I can't even edit them due to this read only issue.
