Just downloaded a random video from youtube, it does not have any problems that would make it unplabable: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BPFfSO8xozI
I thought that they might have started encoding videos in a different way (for example encode video with H.264), but it does not seem to be the case.

Seems like it has audio problems.

Yes, audio has problems on OS2008. For example using alsa driver for output in mplayer results in choppy and unplayable playback. Using sdl results in a slight audio/video sync issues. Using esd seems to be ok, but it consumes more cpu resources than other audio drivers. So audio output is suboptimal at the moment and can be improved, but there's nothing fatal.

If I disable sound for them, they play just fine.

Most videos that are too heavy for playback in realtime, can be played fine with audio disabled (in slow motion). But I have yet to find such flv files (that is too cpu intensive) on youtube.com
