Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

I haven't even gotten to the page to download the software before I'm running into problems.

Even loading the index page @ http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/ has been hit or miss. Resulting in seeing the actual page 1/3 times.

The servers are over loaded.

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

Overloaded or was the upgrade pulled? Now when I start up the Wizard, it says there is no upgrade for my unit (N800).

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

It doesn't really make sense that Nokia can't handle this small amount of bandwidth. They are a multinational corporation. How can't they afford or have a decent server? I mean how many N800s & N810s are there in comparison to any of their other products?

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

The server is overloaded. The update hasn't been pulled.

I got the same message just now. It does give me an option to load a bin file that I've downloaded.

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

I was downloading it at 4kbps :( But i guess the server crashed because i only got 34mb of the file. I ran a search on the file name in google and found some one hosting it, got it at 1.1mbps :) the md5checked out. flashing it now.

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

I managed to download the n800 update from another source, but I can't even get into the official site to get the md5 to verify its integrity. Nokia needs to get maemo.org set up on proper hosting infrastructure pronto. It is embarrassing to see a site associated with a multi-billion dollar company crap out week after week.

I can't find anyone else hosting this file. Got a link Jay?

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

Agree re host stability and performance issues... their web application server issues reflect very badly on Nokia.

Stability is an issue with maemo.org on a regular and frequent basis, seemingly at any hour of the day or night. You just never know what sort of response you are going to get when you click. That makes me not want to visit the site, especially if a new or popular application is being released or upgraded.

Whatever the reason - be it poor web application choices / web app framework / server(s) implementation - whatever is driving Maemo.org, tablets-dev.nokia.com (in behind Akamai services), and related is... well... crap at this point.

Since tablet users hit these sites on a regular basis, even though the web app performance issue isn't tablet-specific, the tablet user experience is certainly tarnished.

Thanks a lot guys. I picked it up @ Noneus.de
10min download, and 5min install. Fantastic. I agree the interface is already so slick.

You download the OS2008 binary file and the (windows) PC based updater from the Nokia site and then hold the home button with the USB port connected as you power up...

The update takes around 60 seconds (after the multiple hours it takes to get the bin file)!

If you are starting from scratch with a new machine the process should be painless. If you're trying to get a machine back to the configuration (applications etc) you had before it takes a lot longer due to the serve loads.

Don't mean to scare anyone, but I think the linked update provided above has just bricked my N800. It worked fine at first and then when I clicked on the memory icon on control panel the N800 simply froze and then after a couple of minutes the screen went black and I cannot switch it on anymore - it just seems to have died!!

Does anyone know what I should do!!??? I installed some previously saved settings from my OS 2007 version on the N800, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Thanks for any assistance.

Can you reflash it once more? (meaning does it connect to the PC?)
Did you try to charge it? (just in the case you were in the battery limits)..

Ragtag 2007-12-18 22:09

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

Tried both - but nothing happened - no response when trying to switch on. In process of trying to remove the battery (which aint easy!) to see if that makes any difference. I have seen stories on this forum of people's N800s/N810s coming back to life again.

Phew - taking battery out worked. Up and running again! Thanks!!

Did you verify the md5 checksum before flashing?

(Just an added precaution... personally I never flash without making sure the file I downloaded is 100% correct. That also means you can download it from anywhere... as long as the checksum is correct you should be safe.)

I cant find X-chat Irc client and I cant install MAME emulator launcher.

OS2008 is cool :)

Finally! That's the right way to do it. Downloading at 200 Kbytes/sec, half done already.

What's the correct MD5? Can someone post it here?

Thanks. Those work ok with this official release of OS2008?

Has there been any information when non beta version might come out. For some reason link Maemo page link to X-chat page didnt work. Adress was missing.

The final will come when it comes. For now, it's really not a stability issue (I haven't had a single crash since I started using it around the time the N810 firmware was originally released), but there are a few little quirks in the interface. So, forget about the beta status. :)

Re: Updating to OS 2008 ... problems ensue

Amusingly, even this late in the game, my just having upgraded my 800 to 2008, the download *still* took almost 10 minutes... and when I had to do it a second time, it wasn't bright enough to notice that it already had it downloaded, and it had to download it *again*.

Other than the mce.ini fix for sleep mode courtesy of Dante_j, though, I'm quite happy with it so far.
