Easy way to update N800 firmware on Mac running OS X?
 

Okay, now I'm the one asking for help:

Is there any EASY way to update the firmware on the N800 on a Mac running OS X?

By easy I mean no command lines, no dual boots with Windows etc. It has to be something as easy as the Windows update wizard.

It is very easy, but it does require use of the terminal. See link above. Don't be scared.

The link above says it can be done entirely through a GUI, but it's not the Nokia-approved method.

Is there some reason why Nokia don't approve a GUI-based firmware update?


It's not for me, it's for someone who cannot cope with using the terminal. They bought a Mac (and a tablet) precisely to avoid stuff like command lines.

The 770-flasher.app works just fine. Has a gui and everything.

It's a lot better than the command line, but it's still a bit complicated compared to the Windows wizard.

With the wizard, you just follow some very simple on-screen instructions (connect the tablet with the cable, press button X etc), you don't even have to know what firmware is. The Wizard's only requirement is a basic understanding of english.

770Flasher requires you to get the image you want to install yourself. It's relatively unclear where or how you do this. I know what the link is, but how is anyone non-technical supposed to find out?

i'm as non-techie (i.e linux) as you get and i found the method in post #2 works really well ... took me a few minutes ...my main problem was that i was so interested in seeing what os2008 looked like that i er ...forgot to plug in the cable ...that set me back for at least 3 tries .... nothing seemed to be working ?? hmm ...once i plugged the cable in it worked like hot damn ... there are lots of places to get the image now

You say you're as non-techie as they get, so how did you find the correct image to update the tablet?

I didn't say it didn't work well, I said it was still a bit complicated compared to the Windows wizard. My original question was asking for a method that was as easy as the wizard.

A lot of you might find 770flasher very easy, but it requires a fair amount of previous knowledge about firmware updates. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who has no knowledge about firmware or flashing.

The wiki page's documentation is terrible, for example sentences like this don't really mean anything:

And please be sure to have no character in your directory name of Flasher/Image

I'd guess they mean no non-alphanumeric characters in the folder where you keep the image, but that's not what they said.

On top of all this the wiki's download link to the flasher doesn't work, and neither does the link to the images.

I share your enthusiasm for updating the wiki. I found it quite easy to add some information to the ITT tips and faqs. Please summarize what you have learned and think would be useful and add it there where folks with problems should be able to find it. The ITT fora are getting rather too large for newbies to find the nuggets they need.

I tried many times to get the 770 flasher working on my Tiger partition today but it hung after a few seconds, something about 'secondary..'. I had previously used it to flash the 2008 beta ok.. so, I was obliged to power up the XP again! Ugh

Tiger has had a few updates lately, but I do wish Nokia (?) would put together a gui like the XP one.

That's weird, I didn't have any trouble with the 770 flasher. I was going to do a step by step on how to do it with pictures, but all the sites are timing out for me at the moment. Maybe later I'll do one.

A GUI front end could just wrap around command line software, no source code necessary.

However, I would like to see the source code released, so it could be built for more operating systems and architectures.

I'm beginning to suspect there is more than one problem with Leopard on my iMac.. the one problem I know of is an inability to edit my address book, and nearly everything is owned by root!

Tiger is OK, and I was able to flash the beta version ok. Someone on Jaiku too mentioned no trouble with the flasher on Leopard.. hmm

Anyway, I'm happy with the N800 result ;-)

You didn't happen to do an archive and install when you upgraded did you? We've had a few problems with that. Keeps some of the settings from 10.4, which 10.5 doesn't seem to like. Usually I copy out every thing but my /Username/Library folders, then do a clean install. Then copy the folders back.

As far as I can remember, I just chose to chance the upgrade as I had two extra Tiger partitions and several backups. Perhaps the new upgrade which is rumored will fix things.. crossing fingers as we used to say.

Technically, the non-GUI method isn't approved by Nokia either: the OS X flasher-... was compiled as a semi-skunkworks project by someone in Nokia, which is why it's downlevel.

Having 770Flasher.app ask you (or interrogate your tablet) for you MAC, download the image and then flash it would all be perfectly possible. However, I'm now Mac-less, so the options are:

• Use the command line or 770Flasher.app as-is.
• Someone picks it up and does a better job (very welcome to :-))
• Someone buys me a Mac and I do a better version including these suggestions, possibly based on 0xFFFF for Intel Mac support.

I've tried the GUI method on my Mac ibook G4 more than half a dozen times now. No luck so far. I successfully downloaded the 770 flasher and the latest Nokia image, opened the .bin file in the flasher, then disconnected and turned off my N800 as directed. I started the flasher but at this point got message and spinning wheel indicating that it could not find a suitable USB port (or words to that effect) and is "waiting". Assuming the program was just downloading a massive amount of data, I let it run for about thirty minutes, but the message remained and the little wheel kept spinning until I canceled.

Solutions tried: 1. Powered up and plugged the N800 into the USB port after the no-USB message appeared; 2. Started over, with the N800 plugged into the USB (but turned off) before starting); 3. Tried again with N800 plugged in and turned on; 4. Removed one, then both memory cards from the N800 and repeated all of the above; 5. Restarted the computer and repeated the above; 6. re-downloaded new copies of the flasher and image and repeated all the above again.

No luck. One other thing I noticed, which perhaps is related to my lack of success: when I plug the N800 into the computer, an icon appears indicating it is plugged in (two icons when both cards are inserted in the N800), but when I try to eject it, the icon keeps reappearing, so there's no apparent way to properly disconnect the N800 from the computer. Do all Apple owners have this problem?

Any ideas on what else I can try to update to OS2008?

The GUI doesn't download anything, so long delays aren't that.

Are you using an Intel Mac, or a PowerPC one? Have you ensured that the N800 isn't plugged in to the power (which boots it up into a special charging mode)?

Have you tried running it as an administrator, as a worse case?

I've not got a Mac anymore, so can't help much further than that. Hopefully others can...

I've unplugged the power. It's a PowerPC Mac. The Administrator suggestion may be beyond my ability. I'm familiar with the concept at work (where we have a network administrator who sometimes cedes admin rights so I can download things), but am not sure how to do that on the home computer.

If it's a home computer, then you are the administrator! The way it's supposed to work is,

1. Shut down the Nokia, pull the sd cards out, and set it aside.
2. Fire up the updater, I think by dragging the bin file on top of the updater app icon.
3. It will then do the waiting for device thing.
4. Hold down the home button on the Nokia, and then hit the power button. You should see the little usb icon show up on the screen.
5. Plug in the Nokia's usb to the computer.
6. The flasher app, that's been saying "waiting for device" or something like that will do the "Ah Ha!" thing and update your device.

Holding down the home button on the N800 and then hitting the power button did not produce a usb icon on the screen. I connected the N800 to the computer anyway, and got a message on the N800 "Unable to connect via USB. No memory card inserted."

I'm starting to wonder if my N800 is mutant (or maybe it's me).

Maybe it's hold the home button and plug in power? I can't remember, don't have a N800 any more.

Then your N800 is on already? It should be off and unplugged.

Whilst it is off, connect the USB cable.
Start the flasher.
Turn the N800 on whilst holding down the home key.

It's something like that, anyway ;-)

Mmmm.. This confuses me. it looks ,like step 4 turns the n800 on??


I too am trying to update to OS800 on a Mac. I have NEVER updated Firmware before & this new purchase of mine is my FIRST interaction with Linux. I'm brand spanking new to it, so I may seem unbearably stupid or ignorant to some folks. Sorry for that. But I AM trying to learn.

Here is the process, as I understand it, and what I have done thus far.

1) Download 770Flasher

2) Download image from Nokia

3) Make certain N800 is fully charged, but NOT on or connected to Mac. Also ensure that neither memory card is in it.

4) Run 770Flasher

5) Select Image file from whatever location you downloaded it.

At this point... things seem to come to a complete stop.

On the 770Flasher window, I see the following:

That's it. When do I plug in the N800? Should the N800 be turned on when I plug it in? What SHOULD the screen prompts be? How will I know if there is a problem or I have done something wrong?

I really DO appreciate any help or advice anyone can share to help me past this.. so I can access more cool stuff on my fab new toy!

SF, have you switched the N800 on in update mode?

You do this by holding down the bottom button on the front (looks like a house) and WHILE HOLDING IT DOWN you switch the tablet on with the power button. If you do this correctly a white Nokia screen with a USB logo in the top right hand corner will appear.

This is the mode the tablet has to be in for it to update its firmware.

Note:

The device must be plugged into the computer with USB before you turn it on holding down Home.

Just got my NEW 800 (yay!) and want to flash to 2008 right away, but I'm on a Mac - so...

1) Download 770flasher
2) TRY to d/l .bin from Nokia by entering ID from device

Now here I encounter a problem - The page will NOT accept my ID, taken directly from both the box and inside the battery compartment.

Go figure. Any advice?
