N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Are the repositories down?
I am looking to download openssh from the extras repository. I wonder if it is not up and running yet for Chinook or....it is completely overloaded due the OS2008 official release or.... just plain dead. Has anybody been able to install openssh from the extras repository on the official OS2008 ? Thanks |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
It is there and working but tricky to get due to the traffic load on the servers. I'd just get the client or the server depending on needs rather than try for the combined package. Might be easier.

Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
For the last couple of hours I've been getting stat errors when attempting to install wget:
Code:
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com chinook/user Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com_certified_dists_chinook_user_binary-armel_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory) |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Maybe it is really time to coordinate a backup
service for all this repositories. Probably a formal torrent service would be interesting.... Who would like to contribute resources to mirror this repos and provide a totally distributed file serving service (services per geographical areas I am thinking).... ? Ideas are welcome. |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Same here, stuck...
Half of maemo websites were not reachable. I wonder if it's the network load or a more general problem (Upstream/ defective server..) Quote:
Maybe nokia? :D ps: It's not only chinook, bora also; as they are probably on same servers. |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Yeah, probably those are on the same servers.
But, building a distributed network may allow say, you to have/manage a mirror of the Bora repositories (or the ones you wish, actually), I could have/manage the Chinook mirrors and so forth and so on. Actually it is not that complex. Torrent already does that. The issue here is to kind of make it "formal" , in order to have the files online most of the time, not just for the brief moments there are seeds when some people download something.... It'd be very nice of Nokia to provide some resources to this as well........ |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Have you tried downloading from gronmayer?

Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Hope it clears up by the weekend, I'm looking forward to getting out of Beta. At least this is on par with any good Linux release, slowing servers to a crawl while everyone upgrades ;)

Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Uncomprehendable !
How is it Nokia either doesn't care or just has no grip on reality. I mean c'mon, this same thing has happend the last 2 releases now, can't dl the bin frrom the "official" source and you can't install any software as their repo's are un-reachable. How is it they didn't see this coming ? As we all just went through this same headache on the beta ? And I'm sooo sick of hearing ppl give Nokia all sorts of excuses, they're not some tiny start-up in silicon valley where they don't know what they're up against for gods sake they're a multi billion dollar corporation. For once I'd love to hear from someone at Nokia give us the low-down on just exactly what they're up to, as so far it's COMPLETELY obvious they're not listening to US. (as with all the suggestions ppl posted about their ideas for the next IT, and where's our no more having to re-install apps again oh less I forget that''ll be on the next release or was that the next, next one or was it to be the last one ? and many other instances) So far they just send out some lackeys and under-appreciated 3rd party devs to make up excuses for them, stop being enabler's really ! First it's "this" small geeky owners only that buy and use the NIT's and thats supposedly why we don't get more input/output from Nokia, then conviently enough 2 secs later we here at ITT are just the tip of the iceberg and there are gazillions of ppl trying to access files all at the same time, make your mind up already Ludicrous, just absolutely ludicrous. |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.

I've just flashed the new OS but I regret because I lost all my apps and now since 12 hours I'm not able to install anything 1)flash image not available. Thanks to somebody I downloaded a mirrored one but without md5. I really hope this is the correct image. 2)repository not available. Unable to install openssh. It's downloading 695kb for now 5 minutes. It just hangs. From my PC, I get this: "An error occurred while processing your request." 3)wiki not available. Their squid proxy is slow as hell. Also the contact email is not valid so we can't even contact the squid admin. "Nokia certified" my ***** |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
I installed OpenSSH server, but it took three tries. And I agree with the rants regarding the quality of Nokia's bandwidth support for the NIT.
[rant] On another (off)-topic: Do you leet-speak dudes have any idea how fscking irritating it is to read your posts? Jesus Christ, this is a forum, not a SMS broadcasting service! :) [/rant] |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Has anyone been able to get any of Nokia's repos to refresh, let alone to get anything installed yet ?
At 24hrs+ later and I'm still not able to get maybe 1 or 2 of the nearly doz repos avail from Nokia, this has been a beyond frustrating experience. At anytime either with the current release, beta, or the N810 we're you able to get Videocenter to install or work ? as I keep getting an invalid error when I tried last night/today. |

Yes, it is *very slow* but I was able to get the basic repos in place. I disabled all but the 'official' repositories and have been enabling the rest one by one. The good news is that the repos are there, as is everything else that I expected to be there after restoring the backup. And, so far, it seems to be going well, server lag time notwithstanding:) So, I counsel, as many others have on this forum, patience. It seems a poverty of bandwidth is a measure of the wealth of IT users! And, first thing I notice is that MNotify is back! Woo Hoo! Much more to come, I am sure. |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
Vent your download spleen in bug #2531 - at least then Nokia can't say they aren't aware of the problems. :)
Repositories still knackered here. :( |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
I got all my apps installed but it did take a few tries, skype didnt want to do it at first , i'm trying to install kagu player its 5mb and it takes forever to download , just about 30min i'd say...I hope this gets resolved its ******ed

Nokia hasn't exactly embraced bugzilla in their work, but this seems to be slowly changing -- there's some actual work happening in bugs.maemo.org. Let's not ruin this by making the bugzilla a flamefest that is useless to the developers doing their work. |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
I shall sit this out for a week until the access mess gets sorted, otherwise it is just too frustrating. There are enough rants on here, no need to add more, esp mine.

It looks like the repo's may be slowly coming back to life. I was able to get python runtime loaded.

Can someone post the link to the site that had most of the repositories on one page?

Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
none of the repositories are working! i am using bora and i tried downloading most of the apps and they don't work, i refreshed the browser 5 times and when it actually downloaded the file the app manager wasn't successfull.
and a did a number of different attemptsfor the past 3 days at 3am 7am and 4pm eastern time. ps: i agree with ttgowings as the maemo website should be more than capable of such things, just think about it remember when FEAR combat came out? it had thousands of downloaders from all arround the world downloading files of 3gb - they arent a multibillion dollar business and the game was free of charge, i got no lag in fact i got 500k/s download speed therefore NO MORE EXCUSES please... |

I had to retry 5 times to fetch openssh, using xterm and apt-get Now still not responding.. Do they provide tranquilizers with the tablet? :) |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
I love this community but I must say that the Maemo site for me is the ONLY site I have visited that is most often unresponsive and/or completely fails a request outright. This has become the norm for the last while, not just this past week with the OS2008 launch. Really the only site.
From the view of cultivating the large scale interest around the tablet, this is infuriating for an end-user. Its just as bad as having a wireless 'internet tablet', modern though it is, that can't see N routers? Like what's that about? Frozen web sites, blind wi-fi, some of it just drives me bonkers. ...and now 'application restore' can't find or source most of the apps that were installed in my Beta OS2008. How many people really have the time to keep starting from scratch and manually re-installing and setting up their tablets every single time there is an update?! |

Ok, I just checked and didn't have the log enabled, so I guess I'll try again and see what gets logged. In the meantime, has anyone managed to get past this? Is it just a matter of waiting till the demand drops a bit? EDIT: Indeed, all it took was for me to ignore my own advice, lose my patience and post *another* whine and voila! My next attempt worked. |
Re: N800 with OS2008 (chinook) repositories.
This whole process has been pretty much a pain. After upgrading from the 2008 beta and using the backup utility I had to do a complete clean reinstall.
The new 2008OS was having to many conflicts with what I had backed up. I could not get any of the repositories to work and the connection icon was completely gone and was not fuctionable. This has happened each time I have upgraded. You would have thought I would have learned by now. I hope in future updates that this is a focus. On a positive note. This is one great OS and it is very responsive. |
