How old are you?

Just trying to get an idea of the general age group here and who all uses these devices. I'm in my late 30s :)

20 here. First time I've had to think about it before answering, too. -_-

The really odd thing is that the majority of responses so far comes from people which must already have some degree of presbyopia - while the users that can still see and read their tablets are relatively rare...

linuxrebel, we don't count presidents up here in Canuck-land but I'm half a century this year. And I'm getting cranky too. Can you beat old and cranky? :)

I've voted, but also wanted to state my age: 34.
And still looking for a permanent job. Next life I'll avoid educational careers in Italy.

You damn kids get outta my yard!

OK so I'm only 40, and still tingling slightly at finding that there is an off-topic forum on this website. It's sort of like going to a book-reading group with members of the New York Literary Society only to find that there's a back room where they all read Marvel.

Speaking about Linux.. I've been using, developing, loving, then hating it since version 0.99pl13 .. Even if I do prefer Mac OS X, Linux keeps following me...

Re: How old are you?

wow, I do feel young again.

I'm 24 and just finishing undergrad, where I feel old since I'm the only one married and with a kid (3 months nows).

As for linux, I've been using compy's since the good ol' Tandy 1000 that my mom couldn't figure out how to turn on and Linux since Redhat 2 or something, but it wasn't til 4 years ago that I started to really like linux, before I just liked the idea of linux.

The best part is I'm a Management major and just accepted my first full time job. Man am I gonna have with IT departments.

Re: How old are you?

Ok, I am the oldest slacker (so far) out here - I hit 60 this year.

My first love was the NEAT assembler for an Elliot 4120 (UK machine) using paper tape. Still remember it fondly, very fondly. Anybody out there still got a copy of the little hand-book for the 4120/4130? I'd love to get a scan or p'copy of it.

Then there was a PDP-11/40 with Unix 6th. ed. direct from K & R, then there was kids, and then it was game over.

I am hoping the IT can help me re-connect.

Re: How old are you?

I'm 28 and amazed. I knew we had a diverse community here but never thought about the age gap.

I might be an odd duck, I started on a C64 when I was 3 and called quotes "quilts". ("load quilts star quilts comma 8 comma 1"). First PC was a 286 (with a mighty 80MB HDD) in the late 80s, and then a beastly 486 33/DX with 8MB RAM and a 212MB HDD in 1990 or 1991 (I forget, we could run Wing Commander at high detail). First Linux distro was slackware in ummm... 1994? 1995? Something around there.

I've had more than one grey haired coworker look over their glasses at me wide eyed when they needed to do something in DOS and I start spewing commands like I'd used them every say since the 80s.

Re: How old are you?

I'm Thirty-four-and-a-bit. What I found interesting was that I had pre-conceived notions about how old some of you were based upon your posts in other threads, your avatar, and your handle. For instance, GeneralAntilles - I'm surprised to see that you are 20! And Hedgecore, your avatar had me thinking all this time that you're in your 40's. Goes to show that you cannot judge a book by its cover. It also shows that Linux experience, community involvement, and general courtesy towards others on this forum are not necessarily age related. Very nice to see. The future looks bright for the NIT community.

My first computer was the TRS-80, followed by the Tandy 1000. My first calculator was a HP-25. Still use a HP calculator for work, and got my N800 this summer. Linux experience is about 3 years in Fedora and Ubuntu.

45 here. Another side benefit of owning a NIT is that I have to do a better job of keeping up with my reading glasses :).

Re: How old are you?

Turned 38 last month... Sometimes I feel that the smallest font web sites on N800 makes me to go check my vision.... (I do not wear glasses yet.)

My addiction to computers started in high school when we programmed something in Basic using Kaypro Z80 computers having CP/M OS... :D

Then I bought an Atari 800XL to home. Those were the times when programs were saved to cassette, and I could only dream on upgrading to a 5 1/4 floppy drive...

Re: How old are you?

These responses are far too tame ;-) Someone has to spoil the party, may as well be me! So the question is: wisdom of age vs youthful enthusiasm? personally I don't profess to having any of the former and only a little left of the latter. At least age gives you perspective, you get a chuckle out of statements such as "it's impossible to program modern computers in machine code" and get to see old ideas being regurgitated as The Next Big Thing.

ps: there would be some capital p's around here but I have just discovered that shift-p opens windows media player (xp sp2, ff 2.0.0.11) - anyone else have/had this problem and know what the solution is? Update: hmmm, for some unknown reason "Windows Media Player" was activated in taskbar/toolbars. Untick and back to normal. Very strange. Stuff like that makes me paranoid

Re: How old are you?

29 here.
First portable TRS-80 loved it!First Linux experience probably tinkering with a server about 5 years ago or so.
Formally trained in Pascal and C++ even though I don't code at all anymore. I'm getting into the movie business after my love affair with IT fizzled.
The age on this forum definitely skews older thats why I love it:D there is less OMG teh IT suxxorrs get teh ifonzzz, and more somewhat rational discussion etc. I'm sure that those days are numbered and this place will get more and more crappy.

Yeah, well, I'm 62, and I'll raise yer "get off my lawn" with a "turn that damn music down!" Oh, and thank God for the zoom button.

Re: How old are you?

EIPI: Hahhaha. There's a line from a song (by a pretty bad band) that goes "I'll be happy when I die, I'll be 34 but I'll have my pride." and I love it cause I really think it applies to me. My usual activities are getting campy with age. (Another few years and I'll be the 'old guy' in the circle pit.)

My avatar's actually Joe McCarthy, commie witch hunter extraordinaire, which is ironic when you consider my leftist views. :)

Re: How old are you?

I realized it was Joe Mccarthy, I just thought that would put you in your 40's (or more)!

Another telling piece of information would be for people on this forum to post real pictures of themselves, or better yet - actually meet in person. A sign of the times now - it used to be that you would have 'meets' - little get togethers to discuss gadgets. Surely something like that would be beneficial to everyone - you can learn first hand how to do something, and give/get hands-on advice/training. Any thoughts?

darethehair 2007-12-20 16:24

Re: How old are you?

45 years and about 8 months here...and I am *so* glad that this still qualifies me to stay out of the final "46 and over" category -- whew!

For the future, maybe we can have a few more age categories for people like me, so that I can avoid the 'old guy' slot?

:)
