GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Does anyone else feel that GPS functionality is even more unreliable / slow in the new firmware release? It feels like the unit does a cold start every time now, even if I switch GPS off for just a few seconds.
On a related note, I wish Nokia would opensource gpsdriver. |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I just upgraded yesterday so I really haven't had time to test it out much, but it seems like there are fewer sats visible after the upgrade than there were before.

Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Before upgrade to 50-2, the N810 could see several sats ( with 4 in green) from in my office at the house. After 50-2 upgrade, N810 can only see 1-2 sats indoors. I have to go outside to get 4 green ones.
I would go back to previous OS2008 release but I would like to use N810 as nav device, and well, thats out. |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Hmm. Someone said it used the Sirius III chipset (if i'm right), are there any open source drivers out there for that particular chipset that could be used instead?

Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I've found the GPS functions to be perfect, but I use OS2008 for N800 using a bluetooth GPS with SiRF Star III chipset, personally I think its more accurate, but that could have nothing to do with OS2008 and just in my head. (maemo mapper actually has me on roads and not on footpaths or in tree area's)

Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Has anybody noticed this bug, I have a newly flashed N800 (OS2008)
and I'm using an external GPS that connects via bluetooth. Then I select "My Selection" and "Map" after the application open I then select GPS, a dialogue box opens with the GPS display, "No GPS Connection" even though tje "Connect to GPS" is checked. I then go into the "Setting" "Control Panel" "GPS location" and pair with a new device and searches for the new device, so good so far. It then asks to pair using the four digit code. The problem is that the GPS does not have a keyboard to enter the pairing digits. Does anyone have a work around for this basic bug? |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
There is no need to pair gps unit under Linux

Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I have been unable to get either Tomtom 1 ver 3 with BT enable to pair with n800 (2008) or SG289 data logger.
Maemo mapper will not find them and although N800 can see them will not pair...:( |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I don't have OS2008 installed yet, but my BT TomTom GPS Mark I works fine with Maemo Mapper on OS2007. But:
1) There's no need to pair with it (as in pairing in the control panel), and 2) If Maemo Mapper has been set up to work with one BT GPS (it takes note of its BT MAC address) it won't work with another BT GPS (the N800 sees it but MM won't use it). You have to go through MM's BT GPS configuration again. I was bitten by this one when I couldn't get MM to work with my friend's GPS (exactly the same as mine). |

As for pairing the two devices, my GPS reciever is set to 0000, so i just need to type 0000 on the N800, and added the GPS to Bluetooth Devices. Now the N800 finds and connects to the GPS everytime i start Wayfinder. |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I'm on day 2 with my newly acquired N810 OS2008.
The 'map' program is pretty basic GPS program, it doesn't calculate routes or tell you where and when to turn....well I haven't figured out all the stuff yet. When I activate the 'map' program, outside it took like 20 minutes to lock onto 5 SATS, using 3 standard. In my office it has found 6 SATS and not locked onto any. It took about 3 minutes to find the 6 SATS. the GPS program seems fairly decent for the freebie. I have had no issues and I am not using any BT GPS 'modems', just the internal. |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Try to install bt plugin to see if the problem lies with MM, your bt device or with OS2008 system.
There is a number of types of bt devices. Some or most of them require pairing but you can connect bt gps alone devices without pairing ( or some I have already tested). I am writing bt applications and full communication (two-way) protocol is really complicated requiring each bt device to respond with some status and bt type data (pairing on or off). Bt plugin should solve your problem as you can make a selection of a type of bt device you are going to connect to. I am just writing a nice gps navigation appplication based on 2 gps units. Darius |

Do you mean this: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/maemo-bt-plugin/
although it states n700? cheers |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Only problem I had with the latest update was a non responding gps. Had to reboot everything for it to work correctly.

Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I just got an N810 five days ago, and have observed the following about the GPS:
1. When Map starts, the GPS screen always displays "No GPS Connection" for about five seconds. Then it displays the globe with no satellites for about 10 more seconds. 2. 15-20 seconds after starting, the GPS screen first shows some satellites. 3. The amount of time it takes to lock into a position generally varies with the battery's state of charge. With a good charge it can be 30 seconds. With a low charge it's more like 45 seconds. 4. A couple of times it didn't get a fix at all. At one time it wasn't even seeing satellites. This seems to happen with the battery very low. 5. Warm start: Once it's got a fix, if the Map program is closed and reopened, it takes the same 15-20 seconds described in (1-2) above to start receiving satellites. Then it takes between four and 30 seconds more to reacquire the fix. It takes longer if the charge is low. All my trials were with WiFi connected, no Bluetooth, and (I think) nothing else running. |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Have you tested your N810 against external gps unit ?

Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
I compared N810 against a 4-year old Garmin iQue 3600 PDA+GPS combo, and the Garmin is consistently quicker in obtaining a fix. It can take me several minutes to obtain a fix under clear skies with N810, even when GPS has only been off for a few hours. The Garmin averages 35-40 seconds, as normal GPSs should.
The problem is that N810 apparently uses a cheap, low-end, underpowered GPS chip. This thread has more information http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...&highlight=gps |
Re: GPS even worse in new OS2008?
Mayby N810 is some form of A-GPS chip , a-gps solution.
So to get fix quicker it needs to process A-GPS signal. A-GPS is a common solution in some models of cell phones. Darius |
