How long to charge the N800?

Hi all will have N800 wed from circuit City for 199.

Question i took back a Archos 605 mainly 8 hours to charge battery way too long.

I hope Nokia more like a cell phone near 2 hours? Also I see I can have a spare battery charged ready to go.

I'm thinking three hours, but I've never timed it, to be honest.

I would say between 3 and 4 hours...but did not time it neither...

It usually takes about 30 minutes to recharge my n800.

Bzzt.

You should try and keep it as charged as possible. The lithium-ion batteries in the tablets don't take well to frequent discharging (since they have a limited number of charged-discharged-charged cycles).

Basically, you want to try and balance between two extremes: Discharging it as little as possible, and keeping them cool. Cool is more of a problem with laptops as they generate a lot of heat. Since the tablets don't generate much heat, you'll tend to shift more towards keeping it charged.

I've owned both a 770 and an N800 since their respective release dates, and keep them both plugged in whenever I'm at home and at my desk. I haven't noticed any significant drop in battery life on either device, so charging overnight is obviously not the harmful practice that Nokia's documentation and many people here make it out to be (this is something that dates back to the NiMH days and does not apply to Li-ion).

Mines take about 2 hours to charge.

Re: How long to charge the N800?

I virtually never plug mine in and rotate a real Nokia battery with two cheap eBay Hong Kong batteries. I have been doing this for almost a year and haven't noticed any significant dropoff, though I imagine there has been some. I bought a $10 battery charger from eBay as well, and that's what I use for the charging.

I think that more than one battery + a charger is the way to go. Then you don't care how long it takes to charge. And if one of the batteries starts getting weak, I'll just buy another one.

your taking advantage of the quick charge feature of lithium ion batteries.

Due to their nature, they are able to accept high discharge and charge rates, but in order to prevent heat buildup and safety issues, the fast charge only works up to 80%, the last 20% the voltage drops dramatically and the battery is filled much slower.

if i have to assume 1 hour to 80% and then 2 more hours to 100%, but lithium ion batteries don't like to be discharged like TheGeneral was saying, however, i'm sure even if the unit did die out (not able to turn on) the battery TRUE state of charge should be around 30%, because anything below that and the cells are damaged. Your capacity will drop dramatically

however, the new age of lithium batteries such as phosphate solves this safety, charging times, life and hopefully one day cost. Bank on the electric cars to evolve that segment.

using 2 battery is a good idea.

only if you are using the device full blown time without barely access to a plug, (like wifi for 8 hours a day). Simply because current lithium ion ages throughout its time and after 3 years of shelf life its capacity will drop dramatically.

However that's, "current" lithium ion, the future holds much promise for this chemistry.

I just got my 800 all seemed fine I charged it first thing for about two hours. Then I upgraded to 2008 played for it a couple hours battery was down to one hour left. Here is issue I turned it OFF then charged it and still at 8 hours says charging? Turned unit on says I have two hours of use? I can charge it up while turned OFF correct? any Ideas why 8 hours still not charged?
Does it matter if n800 is on or off while charging I had mine off first nite
from 9 pm till 5 am still sadi charging
thanks

Re: How long to charge the N800?

With the N800-provided 890mAh charger it takes about 2 hours or a bit more to charge from low level to full (I prefer to charge it way before it drops that low but a couple of months back I had some situations where it accidentally discharged overnight due to rogue applications). With some of the smaller Nokia phone-chargers (390mAh I think) it takes an hour or two more.

@trido:
It sounds like something happened with the unit's charging control. And yes, you can charge it while it's off, and while it's on, and you can use it while charging (although when running battery-intensive applications or streaming internet radio you'll see it charging for a very long time).

Try stopping the charging. Use it for a while then try again. If that doesn't fix it then it sounds like something happened to the device and it may need a repair. It could be OS2008 though, but as there aren't other reports.. well, it could be worth trying a reflash.

Re: How long to charge the N800?

i am wondering iif anyone else has noticed this same problem...
since i upgraded to OS 2008 on my n800, it seems to have VERY short battery life! its killing me... it used to be so good for a day or two of moderate use with 'sleep' mode when not in use.
any advice?

Re: How long to charge the N800?

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth before sleeping it (eg. pick Offline mode). Make sure there aren't any CPU-hog apps left running. Flash apps/ads in a browser window can also be CPU hogs.

I fell asleep with my N800 fully charged streaming Internet music last night. The battery power was used up completely. I applied the N800 charger, and set my timer(s). My N800 took almost exactly 2 hours to charge to the point where it stated "Battery full". Hope this information proves useful. M5

Re: How long to charge the N800?

I'm having the same problem as Trido was having. Yesterday I left it on the charger for about 5-6 hours at work. End of the day it still said it was charging, but I unplugged and the battery charger said full. Used it for about a 1/2 hour on the way home and then put it away for the night.

This morning it was totally off and wouldn't turn back on. I've had it on the charger at work since 9am this morning and it still says charging 7 hours later. I did try the suggestion of taking it off the charger using for a few minutes and then putting it back on the charger. Did that about an hour ago and it still shows charging.

i had a similar problem - it inexplicably went away when i disabled the free memory and disk free size applets - my battery life more than doubled too

Are these applets that would come with OS2008, or are they 3rd party applets that I would have had to install myself? I've only had the N800 for about a month and haven't installed many extras yet

Re: How long to charge the N800?

they are 3rd party - but anything that routinely probes either your hardware or the network will quickly drain your battery faster than you might think

Seems like there is something running in the background causing the CPU to run at max speed. You can check it by installing an applet like osso-statusbar-cpu to see the running processes and the cpu load. Do you have a large SD card installed and have you to tried disabling metalayer-crawler?

My battery seems to be flaky and its stock/ OEM. Like other people, sometimes it "charges" for well over 8hrs and is not done yet, but per the posts above, it could be due to this "load applet" that I have installed that monitors process, HD usage, and takes screenshots. I really just needed it to do screenshots. Anyhow, I can't get more than 24hrs of standby out of my N800; and I'm assuming standby is just locking just touch screen and keys, right?

Anyhow, just "unchecked" it from my applets list and will see what happens. I hope this is enough and that I don't need to uninstall it too.
