I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
I have searched and searched this forum (yes, really have) and have seen very few posts regarding how unusable this very site is when browsing on the tablet. It was bad in 2007, worse in OS2008. Freezes, crashes, or if you wait a few minutes for all components to load up, it still barely scrolls, click on a topic and wait again. I'm certain it's not a bandwidth issue on my end, I've not come across any web sites this bad on the IT. Turning off images won't work because you lose the top buttons and active topics text is unreadable. Am I the only one who has this problem? If so, is there a fix in some tablet settings?
If not, isn't there some irony here, that the site meant for users of the IT is unusable on the IT? If I get as far as seeing a topic I want to read, I have to go to my desktop to read it. Just because the IT has a wonderful LCD, the site should still be designed for a mobile device. |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Works fine here on both my n770 2007HE (not front page, forums are fine, though) and n810

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Funny, I just got an N810 for Christmas (after having spent lots of time lurking at ITT) and one of the first things I did was to use it to nav. to this site. I thought I had found a bug in the browser or OS as the browser locked up. I had to power off the device to get back!

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
This site should have a specific version designed for the N800. The frontpage is bloated and the links in the forums are too small to click. For instance, if you are navigating a thread with a lot of pages you have to use the stylus to jump from page to page because the numbers ( [1, 2, 3...] ) are too tiny to use the finger.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
I have never crashed because of being on this site, with any browser, even my N800 with os2008.
However, my feeling, speaking bluntly, is that I feel like a SECOND CLASS CITIZEN when using my N800 to read this site. Things just don't work well. It's a big effort, but I use my N800 for browsing in general, and I use it EVEN WITH THIS SITE THAT IS PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT FOR THE N800. Why go into all-caps mode, usually secret code for "I am obnoxious"? Because the constant statements by N800 users about problems with this site have been largely ignored. I'm sure that many small changes have been made, and I appreciate that, but they haven't worked for me. |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Does this link make any difference for you?
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/?styleid=3 I have no problems viewing ITT in my N810 when using above link. This was discussed in http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...66&postcount=8 |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
I having loading page (home page) problems with this site also, using N800 2008. I have to select "Show images-Never" in View option as a work around.

Using Adblock Plus I have no problems using this site on my N800 with OS2008.
I do tend to use the Classic scheme, but the other layouts work fine too... |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Strange, it works absolutely fine for me on OS2008 on my N800.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Really, what makes more sense: having a stylesheet selector in the *bottom* lower corner of the website that lets you select from a few sheets which, while optimized for smaller screens, also remove certain functional elements at the same time *including* the aforementioned stylesheet selector...
Or just making the default stylesheet work for the very audience and the very device the site caters to. That is, unless the site operators enjoy seeing this post over, and over, again -- and the users of the site like pointing out how to "fix" it over, and over, again. Defaults are powerful things in software. Use them. Make the site, by default, work smoothly on the tablets. You'll also make a lot of people happy at the same time. |

I have used the N800 for almost a year, and I think it's an embarrassment that this site doesn't work right on the tablets anymore. Howard |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
The ugly picture at the top, and the ad, take up the whole screen, so you have to scroll every page just to see anything useful. Having to use a mobile version on an internet tablet is simply silly. And the black background is very difficult to read on a small screen. The site designers are simply clueless.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
When the site was redesigned, fairly recently, there were quite a few posts of this nature, but the coolness of the new design outvoted the dissidents, like me. I can see why the designer would be fond of his creation. The only problem is, the old design worked better for N800 users.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
At the bottom of the page there is the style selector for you to pick a mobile theme. Though it looks fine on my n800 in the regular theme.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
This site is a wonderful example of form over function. And of irony for that matter.
|
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
On my N810 this site cannot be viewed well, even if I choose another style. In Style "mobile" or ...II, ...III the threat-history isn't OK, so I don't link to itt on my tablet.

Unless you can detect what size screen, what browser, speed of the link, etc. make the default for the audience IT friendly. Put a warning on the first page screen: This page best viewed on a Nokia N810 using X zoom, over Y network To Change go to: "hotlink to options" And give an example of what each screen may look like. Great forum, great artwork, on a cable connected 20"screen, high speed desktop. Also could you put the New Post link at the bottom of every page? |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
And part of my original point is that I can't even get to the style selector on my 800. If I wait long enough for the entire home page to load up, I can still barely scroll the page. While the crashing seems to have stopped, it just hangs so long as to make it a waste of time to even try to look at this site. What really confounds me is why it apparently works fine for other users. For those who say it works with images turned off, how do you see the buttons? In my case, it hasn't worked after a fresh 2008 install with no restore and no new apps, it hasn't made any difference installing a lot of new apps, and it was almost as bad on 2007. (N800 with 8gb & 2gb cards and max full virtual ram) |

Also, I would recommend doing the pageMoveUp/Down modification outlined in http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...4&postcount=11 To do the latter I installed becomeroot and nano and then from xterm I typed: sudo gainroot nano /usr/lib/microb-engine/chrome/toolkit/content/global/platformHTMLBindings.xml Modified the two lines and saved my changes. I then used about:config to change 'snav.enabled' to false. These two additions transformed the site for me. |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
I am currently using mobile 3 option. How do I start a new thread? Or go back to the options page? Thanks!

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Navigating this site on the N800 is horrible now. As a result, I visit this site less and less. How long can it take to fix this?

However, it misses the point a little bit, and that is that you should not have to change your browser defaults to view a site that is about the very device you are having to modify the defaults on. I find the site usable, but only just on my N800 OS2008. That is a parlous state of affairs. Hell, I find the skylinkweather.com site more usable on the IT than this one. I'm grateful for this amazing resource for my IT, I just wish it was tailored more to it. |

It does mean you need to use classic on your PC... BTW, I've uninstalled Adblock, and I after trying a modified hosts file with fakeweb I am currently using the userContent.css method mentioned on the site (Search for userContent.css). I added trabalfusion to the list of blocked images to stop the ITT top banner images... |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Its sad that I keep seeing advice on changing to an alternate format. Why do we have to adapt to a forum that's supposed to be all about the tablet? I mean, I can see that if it was for some site about cooking or something.

I will agree that the site is overly complex for what is being displayed. The front page images are superfluous and the site could be written in a lot simple manor. The arrangement of elements need reworking when viewed using the NIT into a single column rather than having the elements on the right. This could be selectively displayed depending on the device browsing the site (please add the iphone to the NIT list as I'm spoofing an iPhone for the Google site). |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
IGN with all its crappy flash advertisements loads faster than this site's main page... its terrible.
|
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
I get mixed results, which tells me that the design and content are only parts of the equation... network performance and traffic are obviously others.
And while I wish the site were more tablet-friendly, I also realize that it's basically 1 or 2 guys doing this, on their own initiative, out of their own pocket (not counting possible ad revenue, although my experience is that such income *might* cover monthly expenses, not development time and costs). So I tend to cut them a little slack. I'm trying to make a much smaller site tablet-friendly and discovering it isn't easy for the solo developer... |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
The site works great for the first 10s and the the web browser becomes completely unresponsive and asks to close. What's more, having two windows of I.T.T. open at the same time will fudge the bucket instantly for me. Its a bit of a shame but I cant read news about my tablet from my tablet... well at least I don't have to worry about my n800 getting all egotistical on me while I'm not looking.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
I'm two months away from a trip to the States and a N810. In your signature, you mention using OTG. Is a special cable required? If so, what is its make and model number? Any special knowledge needed for its use?
TIA, Bill |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
i just had the problem myself with the site taking 100% cpu on my n810.
i rebooted and now it works fine. im posting with three other threads open as well as the front page. very odd, but at least 'fixable' (for me, at least) |
Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
Long ago I switched to the Mobile 2 theme for this site and never looked back. The colors are hideous but it's very fast and usable.

Re: I.T.T. site useless on the Tablet
In any case, it is just a matter of a vBulletin template and CSS, there is no secret to it - if anybody really suffers that much, he could easily roll a new layout and donate it...
