Just got my n800, please help me.
Hey guys! I just got my N800 today. Circutcity shipped it out in 1 day, wow.
I've been reading these forums since 2 days ago and I got convinced into buying the N800 from this forum. I'm so excited and love the device. I really need some help though~ I have a 1gb SD card that I bought for $30 for my camera. I already put the 128mb card that the Nokia came with, into the device. I don't know where to put the 1GB card, and I don't know if I'm supposed to install something on it first. Where is the devices OS installed? the 128 card? I tried setting up the email, but it asked for info that I knew nothing about...Is it possible to register my MSN e-mail account on the phone, or what? it asked for some server names n crap. I read not to install OS2008 yet, where can I find the latest updates on its beta progress? Well, I don't know much about the SD cards it takes. Where do you all buy them? I heard someone saying 1GB for 3-5 dollars! I spent $30 on mine. =( now I'm going to look around these forums and decide what programs to install! |
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Hey, I just picked one up about 4 days ago, and im glad I did. I dont know much, but one memory card slot is behind the battery cover and one hidden behind the upright stand. The OS is installed on the phones memory bank its self.
Im not too sure about MSN email but there is a guide on google on how to set up Gmail which is straight forward, with step by step instructions. Here is the guide btw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlV4Hj7XfdA As for the OS2008, its official from Nokia and I just updated it, you can get the software to update it here: http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4321027 As for memory cards, im in the UK and use My Memory Hope this helps :) |

Have you tried the Internet Tablet School website? It has video and discussions on a variety of topics that are useful for newbies (like me!)

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
@Kotonokia: You can get memory cards from many places. I got my 8gb from newegg.com and it works just fine. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208293

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Is the Nokia N800 compatible with 16GB cards? If not, will it ever be?

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
It seems as 16gb works: http://internettablettalk.com/forums...ad.php?t=10949

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
I just ordered my N800 yesterday from CiruitCity also and got it this morning... Yahoo I have already installed the OS 2008 on it. Now have to go and install programs, but how do you install programs to the SD Cards. I have installed a 512MB card and a 1GB card that I had. Also is there a way to copy my book marks and put them on the SD card and have it transfer over to the N800 book marks; I have a lot of them and wanted to see if there was a easy way of doing this. I also paired it with my Blackberry 8830 with bluetooth for on the go web acess.

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
This may sound stupid, but whats a card reader? Well once I had a computer that didn't have any SD slots like my new one, so I bought a card reader so that I could upload my pictures from my digital camera to my computer. but..reason I ask is because when I look for SDHC cards online, people say that they aren't compatible with their card reader. Why wouldn't they be compatible? If I bought this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208293
then would I just need to take it out of the package and use it? Or do I have to install something? I don't know what a "kernal" is/does. I haven't used my 1GB SD card yet since I'm not sure if I have to do something first. Don't want to break it. At FYE (some mall store) a 1GB SD card was like $30. Whats the difference between SD and SDHC and why are SDHC cheaper? Do these things corrupt easily or something? What screen protector should I buy? Does the n800 have an official one? annnd, how do I use the backup feature on my N800? Sorry, first device I've ever owned. |

Glad to see you chose wisely and got in in so fast. Mine was a gift but like you, I researched like mad to get something that will work for me. Then I asked the wife for it :0) Quote:
Either slot is fine, just be aware the internal one isn't meant to be "hot swapped" meaning you shouldn't just pull it out when the device is running. The external slot under the stand can be removed on the fly, but I never hot-swap that one either, to ensure the card doesn't error out or hang a system daemon. One gig cards are truly cheap now- about ten US dollars for one at some places (walmart always has a sale for cheapies) but you can also get a 4 GB for under $50 if you look around online (like Newegg.com for example.) I don't use MSN, but you should be able to get to it from the web browser. I've used online email "Webmail" for work, my own server, and Comcast. MSN should be the same. Just log into your account right from the browser. Quote:
2008 will most likely be necessary to view your email online, the newer OS really makes a difference in what you can browse to- with more support for Java and Flash sites too. As you have heard it's no longer Beta either. Stop installing applications now because you'll just have to reinstall them again after the upgrade. And for elCamino, just export your bookmarks onto a card or move them over to the n800 with USB, then you can use File Manager to get to them. Quote:
Have fun!:D |
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Kotonokia,
Lots of questions bud. :) First the cards, you need them. Go to google type in 2,4,8 or 16gb sdhc cards and at upper left you will see shopping click on that and presto it will show hundreds of vendors selling sdhc cards. You can also go to www.pricegrabber.com and type in 2,4,8 or 16gb sdhc cards and it will bring you most reputable dealers selling at lowest prices. Read every comment about vendor before you buy! Next download the latest and greatest update os2008 and install it. If you can't take it to a computer store and for $30 they will install it for you. If you live in NYC or Chicago go to the Nokia store and they will do it for free. Play with it for a couple of days checking out the apps that come with os2008 and then go to www.maemo.org and get lots more apps to make your new tablet humm. Then start reading these threads and ask questions when you get stuck. Hope this helps bud. Dan lol :) |

Once mine is too scratched I'll probably just leave it off. The HP RX3715 I had for two years, never used a protector at all and the screen was nice enough to sell on EBAY as nearly new. Quote:

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
I've been playing with my n800 for the 3 hours of charge that was on it. Then I got a low battery warning so I shut it off, and plugged it in for 3 hours. now it wont turn back on! =( and I tried taking out the battery and putting it back in but I seriously can't/don't know how to get the battery out. Killed my finger nails.

If that doesn't work, pull all the cards and try again removing the battery. Plug in the charger after replacing the battery and hold the power button in. If that doesn't work, you've got a bad n800. EDIT: I hope you exchange it they are really great once you get through the teething process. WTH turns into WTF turns into WOW. |
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
It's not turning on! :( I bought it from Circutcirty online and now don't know how to exchange it.
I really just want it to turn the **** on. |
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Kotonokia, thanks for the info on the book marks. I managed to copy them to one of the SD Cards and can see them using the file manager but how can I paste that to web browser on the N800. If I click the exported file it opens a list of all the favorites from my Vista IE7 browser. Does this mean I have to click on each and add to favorites or is there a way to access N800 web browser from the USB cable to find where the web browser book marks are at. Thanks for your help on the export.
Sorry Zeusenerg I typed the wrong name. So thanks for the info on the bookmarks. :o |
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
uhoh, i bought mine from circuit city on the 25th, hope it doesn't do this too. i got mine 5 hours ago so i just mite be safe.
|
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Mine did that at first and did what one of the members above said to hold the power button down for a few. Also I pressed the on and off button several times like on and off and that started up. I also ordered mine from Circuitcity yesterday and got it this morning.

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
There are a few threads on this topic. Don't worry, I'm sure nothing is wrong with your tablet. I would unplug the charger, remove the battery for about 30 seconds, then put the battery back in. Leave the charger unplugged. Push in the power button until the blue light illuminates from around the D-pad, then release the power button. It should boot up.

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
I DON"T KNOW WHAT THAT GREEN THANKS ON THE FORUMS DOES...BUT THANK YOU!! I was crying and so pissed off because well, I thought it was broken. Omg I'm so happy! I had the battery out for 30 minutes along with the 2 SD cards.
What is this Mini SD card it came with? Are mini SD cards those with under 1GB of space? Well, Since 1GB is my largest card, Im going to stick it the internal slot (while the device is off) $45 for a 8GB SDHC seams like a great price. I think it said 12.5mb's of read and write speed. I don't even know what the speeds of my 1GB SD card are. Ok, so I guess I'm going to install OS2008 now. Too bad I already downloaded a bunch of applications. I'm getting discouraged because I see a bunch of acronyms/technical words on the forums that I have no idea what they mean. For the OS2008 upgrade, do I connect the n800 to my computer? I THINK I downloaded the right thing on my windows Vista. Thank you all for contributing to this informative thread! |
Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Makesure that you turn off the N800 then connect it with USB cable then hold home key and power it on. you must have the Nokia wizard installed that will tell you how to install the new OS. i pointed to the desktop where i had downloaded the new OS 2008. It only took like a few minutes to up date. I was surprised that it did it so fast I didn't have anything installed so that could why.

You can do just that, click the links and save them as favorites, or just leave the list alone and update it occasionally to have a separate list of desktop favorites. It's your choice. There is probably another way to do it, but I haven't a clue how. <Not a Linux guru here> |

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Unless the price difference is substantial, I'd usually advice anyone getting a new SD/Mini SD card now to go for a Micro SD card instead along with an adaptor.
Gives far more flexibiity in terms of what devices you can use it with. Might even be the way to go for Sony's MemoryStick (that will teach Sony to keep coming out with pointless propriatry standards just for the sake of it). Zuber |

But I digress on the MiniSD choice. I have nothing that uses it, and if I did it would be a phone. That phone would never get used as a media player and a single card is enough for the phone if it even has a decent camera to transfer pix from, which you can use in the N800 anyway with the included adapter. Besides, isn't MiniSD still only available cheaply in small (2GB or less) capacities? |

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Actually, I was refering to using MicroSD not Mini SD. and I did mention price...
Quick web check. Looking at 8Gb cards, I'm seeing £33 for SD (Integral), 42 (with bundled 2 card readers) MicroSD. You would still need an adaptor. Pays your money, makes your choice... I just think it is more flexible. e.g. Someone with an N810 or a MicroSD mobile says can I have a copy of file x. You can hand them the card and they can grab a copy. Yes I know you can bluetooth it. My daughter want's me to download an MP3 for here DS, no problem. You replace your current device with a new one, better chance of just using the same card if it's a microSD. etc. Worth thinking about before taking the plunge. Sony do wind me up by the way (though I'll still grudgingly buy there stuff it it's that much better). They will deliberatly cripple their product if they have to, just so they can keep you hooked. I get the feeling Apple is in the same camp. iPhone is an MP3 player and phone, but you have to still buy ringtones instead of using existing files. Sorry, end of rant. Zuber |

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Seams like all the applications I download go straight to the flash memory instead of the 2 SD cards I put in. How do I do this lol?
Want to put MP3 and short videos on my 1GB until I get the 8gb SDHC. Does it make more since to put the larger capacity card in the internal slot, or the smaller capacity card? When you put MP3's and video on them, you don't need to take them out of the N800 right? My nokia keeps playing dead any time I shut it off. Then I have to wait 30 minutes with the battery out. Ima update it to OS2008 and hope the problem goes away. IF I do need to return it, can I just drive to Circutcity and ask for an extange? Or do I really have to ship it out to Nokia or circutcity? Seams like a few other peoples devices do the same thing though.. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=8274 |

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Applications don't take up much space, and will be installed in the builtin memory. Being a unix operating system, applications typically go into directories like /bin, /usr/bin/, /usrl/local/bin, etc. You can't easily move these directories onto your SD cards.
It's your media files that will typically reside on SD: music, videos, pictures, maps, etc. I've had my N800 for a little over a week now. I immediately updated to OS2008 as it had just been released, so don't know how the N800 operated with OS2007. I do not have a power problem. You don't have to shut it down when you are done as it uses very little power when running. You can put it in offline mode (turns off wifi and bluetooth) to save more power if you want. On my N800, I press the power button briefly and get a pop up menu. Offline mode is one of the options. You could also lock the screen so that it doesn't turn on if accidently touched. I only shut down if something isn't working right and I want to reboot. After shutting down, leave it alone for 10-20 seconds before trying to power it back on. Also, I've heard people have trouble with it powering off and on with it plugged in, so I do this from the battery only. Funny little device. It definitely has it's wierd quirks. -steve Quote:

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Yea it just died again. =( I emailed Nokia for the hell of it. Reason I turned it off was because I wanted to put in the 2 SD cards. Lol, will never shutting it off kill it for good? I don't think it gets very hot but still...
I deleted all the videos,mp3s, and pictures that were on it with the OS2008 installation since they took up space. So is the flash memory built into it enough to hold tons of applications without slowing down the device, or should I somehow put all the programs on one of my SD cards? Right now I'm looking where to get Pidgin for OS2008, and trying to figure out how to convert video files into a playable format and resolution. Hmm, will the screen turn dim in the 1 or 2 minutes even when watching movies? |

Re: Just got my n800, please help me.
Been messing with my N800 all day. Finally added a video to the 1gb SD card, along with some songs and 1 picture.
Then I only had 128mb left..I found something in the memory section named virtual memory. It asked if I would like to convert some of my internal cards space into more memory. So I told it to do that to the remaining 128MBs figuring I can always take it back if I wanted to. Well, does this make the device go faster or something? and if so, couldn't I just buy that 8GB SDHC card and use all 8gigs for virtual memory if I wanted to lol? Finally my device has no media on the built in memory, and has 2 SD cards equipped to it which are filled with media. ^^ For a minute, I didn't think my headphones would fit in the jack. Had to put some force into it to get them in. lol same with the power adapter slot. I did the update for )S2008 but when I check about product, it says: "Internet tablet OS: maemo Linux based OS2008 then under it it says: Version 2.2007.50-2, is that right or did I screw up? Lastly, Is it possible to download more themes, or use one of my pictures as the wallpaper? |
