N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

4 Attachment(s)
What I have done here is take a 4 port USB 2.0 HUB and replaced it's non-OTG Male-A cable with an OTG mini-B. It is a sweet N800 USB hub now. I just plug it in and N800 OS2008 host mode is triggered. I can plug in all sorts of USB devices, which work.

I have successfully used this set-up (see photos) with SanDisk Cruser memory stick/jump drive, a USB Compact Flash, Smart Media, MMC reader, a USB keyboard. Note: Each device worked in the hub fine (without power) so long as the N800 wasn't asked for too much juice. To use the keyboard, USB card reader and Cruzer jump drive simultaneously the hub needed to be powered using the supply in the photos.

Is there any need to make software changes or install any software on N800?

Thanks...

Great Work!
That is exactly what I want for a long time since I bought Nokia N800. Could you tell it in detail how to make this sweet equipment for N800? A circuit diagram will be very helpful.

Thanks!

The circuit wiring is a no brainer. It is described in many places on this site and on the Internet. Basically you tie pins 4 and 5 together on the Mini-B USB plug and wire 1,2,3,4 to the hub's Printed Circuit Board just as it is were a Female A receptacle. The hub gets +5V from a wall wort (see photo above).

EDIT: I got this all working with an external Hard Disk Drive today. See it here:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...6&postcount=18

Also, here is a little pigtail I made: (pins are 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3, 4 to 4, with 4 & 5 on the mini-B tied together). It can be used for low power USB peripherals like keyboards and flash memory sticks.

Would there be any issues just connecting an unmodified USB hub to your pigtail adapter? Seems like you can buy these OTG minib to female usb A adapters.. Someone suggested directron.. and I found this other link:

TIA!

I made a pig tail adapter and connected and connected a regular unpowered USB hub to it. it worked and was able to connect 2 memory sticks to it and they showed up in file manager.

I made one about an hour ago and it worked like a charm.
Thanks xxM5xx for your help.

I conected a powered USB HUB with 2 pendrives a USB keyboard and a 6Gb external disk.

Worked like a charm.

Nice piece of hardware/software this Nokia N800 (OS2008)

No issues connecting an unmodified USB hub to my pigtail adapter. If you buy adapters on Internet it is hard to be certain they will do what you want. Many N800 owners recently bought Mini-B to Female-A USB adapters only to learn they failed to automatically trigger host mode when inserted into the N800. These people still had to gainroot in xterm and type a lengthy command because the adapter they received was missing the pin 4 and 5 connection. Also, beware of sellers saying, "compatible with USB OTG". They say that but the adapter still doesn't have the pin 4 to 5 connection. Frequently sellers don't know what they are selling....this is especially true on eBay.

Someone here on ITT posted some scripts that save you the hassle of typing the command string in xterm to configure Host Mode. That is good, but I prefer that my N800 automatically enter Host Mode when I plug my pigtail or hub into the N800.

Good going ! The thing for people to be aware of about external hard drives and the N800 is that the hard drive cannot be formatted NTFS if you want file manager in the N800 to read and write to the drive.

Re: N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

This was my first attempt to see if HOST mode works.
IT WORKS...

Now... the main purpose for me to try this is:

Can I plug an USB 3g modem to access internet?
I don't have that modem yet, but I will have it this week. So I don't have details about manufacturer.

Very good.

I think I read somewhere that the N800 will not source more than 100 milliamps as USB host. You stuck an unpowered hub and two flash drives (memory sticks) simultaneously on the N800 and it worked? That is good but I have to think you were very close to the threshold where the N800 was going to terminate 5volt output power.

what is the limit of the file system that file manager can read? 32 gb with Fat32?

Well any single partition cannot exceed ~32gig.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184006

I do not know if the N800 OS2008 has any further restrictions beyond this. I imagine you could have one huge drive with multiple FAT32 partitions, but I have not verified this.

It's in the wiki:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi..._using_OS_2008

For me it was easier to use the method of putting it in the osso-statusbar-cpu gui than cutting and soldering wire.

FAT32 Partitions > 32GB possible with third party apps

Actually, you can have primary FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB if you use third party programs such as Partition Magic. Works like a charm when I tried it with a 400GB hdd + usb hdd enclosure connected to a Philips DVD Player with USB support:

DVP5982/37
http://www.consumer.philips.com/cons...yer+DVP5982-37

The above DVD player is cheap.. about $50.. so I presume (but not sure) if the N800 can access > 32GB FAT32 partitions.

There.. my contribution .. though its probably already mentioned elsewhere on the forum..

No, that adapter is not wired correctly to make the N800 automatically switch modes.

No. So far as I know, no one has found a commercially available adapter that does the job out of the box. That's why jolouis, a member of these fora, is planning to sell modified adapters.

Re: N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

Hi, I have done all things about USB-Host and USB- OTG with Mara's guide. I have bought a f-f usb adapter and plugged in one side to the nokia dke-2 cable and plugged in to cable to the n800. Then switched device to USB-Host mode and plugged in my bigboy 2gb flash memory to the f-f adapter but it didn't worked,no light appears. After this I tried another flash memory Twinmos 512mb and it worked like a charm. Since I thought Bigboy needs more power I bought digitus powered usb hub and tried with bigboy but nothings happened again and it didn't worked. When I connect the usb hub "usb hub not supported" message appears. What can I do for fixing this problem? Is there any usb hub driver etc. for n800 OS2008 that I must install? Because, n800 didn't recognize the usb hub. Am I doing something wrong or missing something?
Thanks in Advance

Re: N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

I have been gone for many weeks (illness in my family) but I'm back. Today I plugged my 4 port USB hub into my N800 and inserted a new 4G Kingston pen drive/flash drive. The N800 was able to read the Kingston drive.

Some people have commented seeing error messages upon inserting a hub like mine. I see the error message also, but I ignore it. The error message is in error because although "USB hub not supported" appears, the hub does work properly. I just ignore the error message. A second error message appears which is "Unable to connect, no file system available". I ignore that one also. Clicking "OK" makes the message disappear.

I proceeded to play ( stream ) a movie from the Kingston drive thru the hub to the N800. I used Mplayer to view the movie directly from the external hardware. The system became unstable. I suspected the hub and 4G drive might need external power assist after all. Upon applying ext. 5 volts to the HUB and retrying to view the movie streamed from the 4G drive all went well. So, it seems the hub and Kingston 4G drive is at the threshold (actually over) of what electrical current the N800 will source out the USB port.

Enjoy,

M5

Edit:
I removed the hub and connected the Kingston 4gig drive ( with the movie ) directly to the N800 using the blue and white adapter shown here http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...52&postcount=5 and the movie streamed fine. The N800 had enough to power the Kingston drive (so long as the hub was not in the loop).

Re: N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

Hey I am posting this here also just incase you care.....

News to all that care ( and even those who dont ) I have the 4port power-injected hub all done. working and happy. As I am moving 87.12 miles away the next 2 weeks of my life are going to be booked. But then I will make another more streamlined version (this one has bits of melted plastic and just look like *** But it works.) so Along with that I will do step by step photos along with a cost sheet. And then I can either build you one (5 bucks over cost +s/h cuz face it it is a pain in the rear to make) or you can build your own, I am pretty happy with mine Cant wait to try it out on some really fun stuff!!! woooo! lata. Feel free to E-mail me if you find you can not wait 2 weeks for this...

Re: N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

Would anyone care to identify wire colors with pin numbers. (I searched around for a while and couldn't see this info) I'm going to hack a mini USB keyboard by removing the standard USB cable and adding the MICRO end of a Nokia cable so I won't actually break into the plug itself. (If there are even standard colors). I'm also going to do the link to get OTG plug and play. Thanks for any assistance.

I think, though, that standard colors differ by
  • Magenta -> Red
  • Blue -> Black

Re: N800 USB 2.0 HUB (direct connect)

It's pretty straight forward:
1) Get cable with MiniUSB on one end. Chop cable in half.
2) Get cable with full female A on one end. Chop cable in half.
3) Join cables together colour for colour (cut cables to make desired final size) using solder and heat shrink/B-Connectors/Electrical tape (depending on your level of expertise and available materials).
4) Plug in and enjoy. Use the USB Control package to switch between host/client through software, or
4b) Bend open miniB connector, short pins 4+5 using a tiny dab of solder or some other conducting material, and fold connector closed again. This will cause the tablet to automatically switch into host mode when the cable is connected.

Alternatively if you wait a day or two and keep an eye on the forums I'm going to be offering pre-OTG'd mini-B pigtails (one end's the miniB described in 4b, the other end is just the wires) that you can cut/join it onto whatever you like.

Thanks!
