Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
What exactly do you mean by 'hard reset'? Will removing the battery for >10 secs wipe it back to factory state? I thought you had to flash the device for that. I was planning on picking up a spare battery but hate to be on a short time limit if I'm switching it out for a fresh one.

To better answer the question, no I don't believe that it will reset to factory if you remove it from power for that long. The type of storage it uses should be non-volatile which means it can retain data without being powered (similar to a memory stick, and the opposite of RAM). |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
A fix for the newer, smaller, but nearly unobtainable connectors used on the n810
MicroB to MiniB connector - for much less than Nokia charges (also allows host mode mod http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=14092 ) They also have a power adapter (the ultra-tiny to the old Nokia power connector which is much more common): (I updated the links - these work for me) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...T21EQ&v=glance http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...T21EQ&v=glance In case these break again, The Amazon ASINs (do search in cell phones) are: B000Y032X8 B000F0PHV2 (Note handling is charged once, so it is cheaper to get multiples to save on shipping). |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
i still dont understand the switch to micro usb , if you look at the ends there isnt a whole hell of a lot of size diference , and if the were concerned about internal space , how about knockinf off the dedicated power plug and charge via USB like should have been done since the 770

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
If you slide the display up, the micro-B takes about 40% of the available thickness, 60% for the slot. A mini-B wouldn't fit. Same with the power connector. It also has to mount to the circuit board and be bonded strong enough to not break off if someone tries to push the cable in upside down.
The n810 is THIN. Perhaps too thin, but they still have the n800. |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
i never said it had to be mini , but just pointing out the piss poor thought behind the design in general , why have two separate plugs , when one can accomplish both uses... sorta like a guy havin two johnsons , one for urination and one for procreation.... just doesnt make sense
|
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
The switch from mini to micro makes perfect sense. The overall physical envelope IS a little smaller, plus this change represents a consolidation of connector formats in the industry. Several companies that had previously relied on proprietary connectors and/or a mix of types are now reducing that nightmare down to micro usb for the most part.
As for having both micro usb and a separate power plug, I can't speculate much on the benefit of any information, but given that it should be cheaper for a company in the long run to consolidate those as well, I'm guessing there was some sense to the decision to keep both. And :D at your analogy. |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
Could you add to the tips how to access the memory card of the n810 from a Windows PC via Wi-Fi ? Still haven't figured this one out.

I went to BestBuy and bought the Nokia cellular phone charger (it came with two adapters, I used the tiniest adapter). It cost $10 + tax. You do have to screw the adapter cable all the way down the threads to make perfect contact. iGo has them too, but the iGo is modular and is not very sensible to buy for just one device. |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
Hey tz1, none of those amazon, or the itT links worked for me in your thread. Can you double check them? The amazon ones might have an issue if you are linking while you are logged into your amazon account, not sure though.

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
Yeah, terminology.. a 'hard reset' in the mobile world usually means 'back to factory setting, delete anything installed by user'. Anyway, removing the battery while the device is up and running is _not_ a good idea, unless you're forced to do so e.g. because the device is unresponsive to buttons. It's like pulling the power chord on a desktop PC - you may end up with corrupted flash and memory card. Better shut down the operating system first.

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
I quite like the "Standard" Nokia charger. It lets you use the same charger wherever you are for both the Nokia Phone and the N810. Very conveniant.
I guess they could have included an option to charge through either port. Have seen this on other devices, where the USB lets you charge as well as the main adaptor, though more slowly. Zuber |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
i just dont like the little pin connector for the power , it wiggles around and seems very fragile , seems like ill damage it when using the device when plugged in

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
A tip;
if you got those cut to fit screen protectors put one over the camera lens so it doesnt get scratched when you put yo n810 in the car mount ..... |

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
Anyone got any tips on a good case? What do you think about this one.

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
it is nice if you plan on putting it a jacket pocket. I have ordered a belt clip case made from the same manufacture.

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
1) I found it handy to make an html file with the 20 links I use most frequently. These are arranged (short names, important at the left) for fastest access using the D-pad. This page is the home page for the browser.
2) I fire up the browser, email (currently claws), and terminal, AND leave them running. This way I can do 99% of my activity using the swap/esc button without touching the screen (or the "pen"). 3) I wish I knew how to activate the application menu using the keyboard (alt-shift-tab under bluetooth). Then I would never have to worry about beach sand under the "pen" scratching the screen. (Wifi at the beach here.) |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
Hello all! I am a tablet newbie and this is my very first post here.
I have had my tablet for a few days now and already flashed my tablet to the newest version (with my tablet being shipped with the 42-19 version). I learned a couple things in doing this and thought to share them with you. The first is common sense but use the backup/restore utility to backup your existing version. I failed to do this and the first day I got my N810 I loaded it with my contacts and when I upgraded to the 50-2 version I lost all those settings as well as the user settings (language, country, Wifi connection settings). I have a Kingston Mini SD 2 gig card and I have it installed in the tablet. It works fine in my testing and now I perform my backup to to that drive. When you restore you can select or deselect the items you want to restore such as contacts, emails without restoring the software version. When I backup to the external memory I can move my backup to my desktop for safe keeping I also perform a new backup with the new version. The N810 utility allows you to have multiple backups just remember to name them accordingly. I can also vouch that removal of the battery from the N810 for extended times does not cause lost data or lost settings. When running Vista on my desktop and connected to the N810, the two memory drives show up on my desktop. I can move data between the desktop and the N810 as well as between the internal and external memory. While connected via USB you can not access the files on either internal or external from the N810. Even file manager will not show the files. It took me a while to find where my files went to using the N810. Once the USB was disconnected lo and behold the darn files show up. I have had numerous problems with the email client. I can setup accounts just fine but connection is very slow and when I close the email window it won't open again without powering down the N810. It is kinda frustrating and I don't know what the cause is but accessing email from the Contacts or Communication tabs. I got pretty frustrated with the email part that I installed Modest (in Beta) and it works perfectly now I wish I could learn if it possible to change or remove the list in Contacts. Under that tab it has email but it opens the N810 default program, I have to go under My Selection/Communication and there it has two emails, the second one is Modest. I select it and Modest starts up. I wish to also clean-up or remove other tabs that I don't use such as Skype, Rhapsody (even though I didn't install them these are just the program tabs). I've tried researching Maemo for how to on menu or tab customizing but I haven't had any luck. Searching brought me here to this site. Sorry this is so long but I thought if someone had a trick to doing this this is where it would be found and it gave me the opportunity to share my tips. Thanks in advance for any help. |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
1. The final version of Modest is supposed to replace the built in email client completely. This should solve your troubles. For now I think you just have to hang in there.
2. Changing the menu is easy. In the control panel there is an option at the bottom called "panels" . Open it and select the Open it and click the "organize" button next to the Applications icon. Change and rearrange to your hearts content. Cheers, James |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks

The changing of the menu part I had down it was the deletion that I wanted. Delete is the shaded out option when in panel organize. I heck I could create a new category but you can't delete a category as long as there is content in it and you can't delete the content i.e. Skype. Lets just say you want to remove Skype from any list (program or application). Even though it is not "installed" how can you make it dissappear alltogether? |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
This is probably in the manual somewhere, but...
The keyboard has shift and control keys and they do what you would expect with selections. Control-tap adds, Shift-tap selects a range. Also Control-C/X/V will do copy/cut/paste. And there are shortcuts like control-q for close which appear in the menus. If you have an external (e.g. bluetooth) keyboard Alt-Tab brings up the app switch, and there are many other shortcuts or things that work just like a typicall Linux (or mac/win) install. |

OK, got it. Basically that is what I was thinking but wasn't certain what was out there in programs or hacks. But to re-iterate, I never installed Skype or Rhapsody but there are the icons in the "My Selection" folder I go to the and under installed programs I do not have these two programs but they are in the library if I want to install them. Seems like Nokia must have gotten some contributions from these folks to embed their icons. Thanks again. |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
If you are comfortable at the command line, there are ".desktop" files located in /usr/share/applications/hildon. They are are used to define the menu items availabe.

- Go to the Control Panel->Bluetooth Keyboard. - Select the "Shortcuts" tab. - Double click "Task Launcher" - Hit the shortcut you want on your N810 keyboard (there's some restrictions, I use Fn-Chr as the application menu shortcut). In this menu you can map a lot of different functions to the N810 keyboard, even the hardware buttons on the top of the device. |

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
Here are a few things that I've been glad to discover in my first few hours of using my brand spanking new N810 that arrived today:
- Can increase amount of time before screen dims in control panel. I was having trouble reading all the text on the screen for some web-sites before the dimming started. - Hold the "down" direction on the d-pad for a few seconds, and it will scroll down the web-page (so glad I discovered this). |
Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
You always can use Space for PgDn and Shift-Space for PageUp in the Web browser.

The N95 has a new kind of charger (that's even different from some Nokia's US phone chargers that is the very same as my Nokia BT headset charger [350mA]). So far, then, I've seen three different Nokia chargers: our bulky one (the fastest), the US Phones(some)/BT headset charger (350mA, less bulky) and the N95 one (200mA, smaaaaaaaaaall)... |

Re: N810 Tips and Tricks
I was playing around with changing the background image on my new N810, and I eventually figured something out that may be non-obvious to other noobs (or maybe I'm just dumb). To get a right-click menu in the web-browser, tap with the stylus and hold it down for a few seconds. The right-click menu will pop up, and there's an "Image" sub-menu in there with a "Save As..." option. Maybe one of these days I'll take a look at the manual. :)
