Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
When I upgraded my n800 and the n810 arrived - I noticed it arrived with a Facebook link pre configured. The commercial video for the n810 also mentions Facebook a few times...
With this being the case I would have hoped that the device would have full support for facebook and the offical applications which come with it. Using the standard site works great and I have no real complaints. However, when it comes to Facebook video there are issues with both watching and also recording... Viewing When attempting to view a video from the facebook mobile application I was prompted to update my flash player http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2418/...288ee0.jpg?v=0 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2398/...6036f6.jpg?v=0 This is very annoying - embedded YouTube videos within facebook can be viewed perfectly. Recording Facebook Video has the ability to record video using a computers webcam with the help of flash. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2418/...288ee0.jpg?v=0 The facebook video application could not detect the n810's built in webcam - this was also the case even though the camera was enabled and active (also obviously tried without) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2398/...6036f6.jpg?v=0 When I checked in the flashplayer settings, neither the camera or microphone appeared as attached devices. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2196/...321826.jpg?v=0 The help guide just advises to use the latest version of flashplayer... What is the real issue here? I would expect the cam & mic to appear n the settings of flashplayer... Is this really a issue with the version of flash that the os2008 has preconfigured or is it that the drivers for the camera and mic are not connected to the flashplayer API? Any help or pointers would be greatly received - I would love to be able to view and also record video to share with my friends and community via Facebook. |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Well, the camera has never shown up as a flash device on the Nokia and OS2008 isn't any different. Youtube has the same sort of app to record via flash and I'm sure you'll find some posts on that. I seem to recall it coming down to the version of video4linux being used, but I could be wrong.

Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
The problem is that Flash on Linux only supports V4L1 webcams - even though V4L1 is not included in the kernel anymore. Modern webcams on Linux - including the N8x0's and the entire Logitech line - all use V4L2 modules.
Anyway, the guy behind the Linux version of Flash - and it's webcam support - blogs about it here: http://www.kaourantin.net/ Hopefully him and his bosses will eventually realise how important V4L2 is and it'll make its way into a future version of Flash. |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Looks like someone already raised this as a bug.
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1889 By the sounds of things we will need an update to the flash player before this will work... :( |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Unfortunately the onus is still on Adobe to get V4L2 support into Flash; as of v9.0b3 it's still V4L1-only, and the webcam routines libflashsupport.c are never called so we can't fix it ourselves.

Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Greetings:
Just a couple of hours ago Bill Gates made his last Technology speech at CES 2008. In his speech he spoke about voice recognition intergration into 2008 hardware. I find that V4L2 support in flash is important to implement into Linux. Think of the advantages N800/810 users will have in recording live video directly into their blog sites or social network sites. Reports/Journalists can videoblog their stories in realtime from their MID's. I believe that we(Nokia N800/810 users) should continue writing about this bug and help the developers to make this plugin into Linux possible. The ability to Videoblog your story gets more attention than Voice recognition on a blog page. Keep the comments coming, lets get this done!!!!!!!! Regards Robert |

Here is a video of what could be done if Flash would work with Linux Using a OQO UMPC, and the Flip Video Camera. Enjoy the video: http://www.gottabemobile.com/CES2008...nkingBags.aspx Regards Robert |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
I don't really see the point of getting this working at all. Even the regular camera apps have MAJOR problems just using video with the camera, so even if support was added to Flash for it, you can expect it to be completely unusable and to freeze the tablets repeatedly.
No thanks. |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
^ agreed with above.

Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
I actually do see a reason to fix this... Recording to Facebook (or any other online app) via the IT would be pretty cool -- and a huge reason for people to buy an IT in the first place. (Facebook works pretty flawlessly after just plugging a webcam into a desktop computer.)

Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
I do agree that there is some valuable *potential* here (with the disclaimer that I loathe facebook per se)... I think it would be best though to wait for future (read: improved) hardware.
|
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
I would love to have this, but when the hardware just can't handle it... there's no point in trying to add it just to get more people complaining that it doesn't work afterwards.
|
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
I'm interested to know why you think the hardware can't handle it... Isn't it just a straight video throughput to the video collection app? If the camera is transmitting 12fps of Flash video to an online app, I don't see any reason why it couldn't be captured adequately. And, if it can't, drop it to 8fps... Most people use these sorts of things for communication purposes anyway (e.g., Facebook), not for capturing high-quality video.

Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
The hardware can handle it under the best possible circumstances at the lowest possible threshold of general acceptance. IMO a better margin of tolerance is called for, one that will likely call for increased onboard ram and CPU horsepower.

I can see an N900 being able to do it, possibly. |

Greetings:
Comments from people who program against people who are marketers. This is what I see here. You will be pleased to know that I am a marketer, and can't write a linux line of code. As a marketer this feature on the Nokia N800 would sell very well. I understand that video quality is important, but I've heard people who used Gizmo video on the N800/810 and they state the video is acceptable, not poor. So I state, let the marketers take care of selling the feature, and tell the coders to go ahead and develop it. Also, ZeroJay and Texrat, two Canadians I believe, Canada is a country of doers. Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Greetings:
I'm putting attention back into this Post because other Internet Tablets have more features. This week at CES(Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas many bloggers were using either OQO model 2, or HTC Advantage, and they could have done a live video, sit somewhere on the exhibition floor and within seconds post a blog with video on their Blog pages. This can not be done with the N800 at this moment, unless I stand corrected. I actually tested a Asian SD flashcard Camcorder making a 1 minute video and then transfering the SD card to the N800, MediaPlayer could not read the video I had just made. Second I used my Canon S5 Digital Camera on Video mode, made the same 1 minute video, again tranfered the SD card to N800, MediaPlayer still can't read the video file. Yes, I know there is a video converter apps for maemo, but this is too much work. With the 2007 OS firmware there was a maemo apps that was called Camera, and it had a video recording feature, at least you could have used this feature to do a short video and post it on your blog. Now for 2008 OS firmware, the apps Camera can only take pictures, what happened? This is why someone must develop linux flash for the N800 webcam to work directly with YouTube intergration. If Nokia wants to be competitive it must keep listening to its users and what they want. Regards Robert |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Isn't texrat from the land of the Deciders.
but zero, you should give peekaboo a try, video stream on that works pretty well and it too building The VLC for that. so flash might do well with the camera also. |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
Greetings Unique 311:
Thankyou very much for posting the apps called Peekaboo. At present I can't seem to load the maemo garage page, maybe later it will. With Peekaboo can the video has been made be saved and sent to a Blog page. Hopely a group of developers will look into this and develop an apps that will work. Nokia N800 really needs it. Regards Robert |

Salut ZeroJay:
I just checked, videocamera project work on 2007 OS, but it won't work with 2008 OS. Please develop a videocamera program for 2008 OS. This is one feature that will make the difference with the N800. Regards Robert |
Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone
While video recording is a cool capability that needs to be looked into for the next tablet version, what I've seen of the N800 camera (which is indeed very little, as support for it is poor) tells me that no one that cares about the look of their blog would try to videoblog with it. The N8x0 camera just does NOT have the quality to be a good choice for blogging. I would also worry about trying to run a video capture program in 128MB of RAM; it might work for the current camera (which has no resolution to speak of) but the next tablet will need more memory and processor to deal with the better camera. (If indeed the next tablet has a better camera, which I have no knowledge of.) Interesting idea, but N8x0 just wasn't designed for videoblogging.
