Leafpad

As requested by several people, leafpad has been ported to OS2008:

This is leafpad 0.8.10 with hildonization modifications from Eduardo Lima

It's available in the repository given in my sig.

Modification where done to configure.ac and to hildon inclusion to fit to new OS2008 libraries.

Hope it's usefull!

Many thanks!!

It hasn't appear up to now. I can see your other apps but not this one.
I used to have your previous version and I've uninstalled it just in case there were a conflict but it didn't change anything.

Could you have a look or sent a direct link please?

Re: Leafpad

It works fine for me now.

Comparing this with the version we've had in os2007 seems to be missing a couple of features that were nice. For example a desktop icon (now you need to launch it from xterm) and the connection to fullscreen button.

Anyway, those are minor stuff and I guess will be added over time.

Thanks again..

Try re-booting your tablet. This happened to me the first time I installed this leafpad, but subsequent refresh installs were OK.

Re: Leafpad

Yes, don told me via PM that buttons have no effect.
From the source code I don't see the F6/F7/F8 so it looks like I'll have to recode it...

For the menu, try to reboot. Maybe it will appear. Usually packages will update the menu after installation but sometimes the update doesn't work.
At boot, the update-menu is run so it should create the entry.
If after a reboot, it's still not present then it's a bug.

Could be that my repo is suffering too much downloads..
You'll have to retry several times.
For some it works, for others, it's a pain..

In the worst case, you can try from command line in xterm (this has a lot more chance to succeed)
sudo gainroot
apt-get install leafpad <-- redo this step until it succeeds

Ok, it finally worked via app manager after many attempts, once installed rebooting device ensures leafpad icon is available via extras menu. thanks!

Re: Leafpad

You can go to full-screen mode from the Hildon menu, but once you are full-screen then you have to use the menu hardware button to get a menu back up to get out of full-screen mode.

Ok, I have the debfarm repo enabled. It does not show up in my app manager and if I type in "apt-get install leafpad":
Quote:

E: Couldn't find package leafpad
I browsed the repo manually through firefox on my computer and I cannot find the leafpad deb there either.

Any way of me getting the OS2008 version please?

Thanks & Best Regards.

Yes because I have removed it. Poor quality if I remember.. Well, that's my opinion. I'll put it back in a minute, try it and see..

Wasn' t there somebody else working on leafpad?

Re: Leafpad

Hum I have version 0.8.10 and 0.8.9-2.
I think 0.8.10 contains hildonization.
As a repository can only reference one version, it will be the 0.8.10.
But if you want to give a try to the 0.8.9-2, click here:

Thanks :)

Re: Leafpad

Thanks for this.

It has a nice icon in the app manager, but then no icon in my app list. Too bad...the little green leaf would look good in the simple launcher desktop applet.

Re: Leafpad

?
I have an icon.
Although it was awfull, I made it a bit better with the help of gimp.
(probably you need to uninstall and reinstall as I don't want to make it a new version)
Do you have it in the menu after a reboot?

Re: Leafpad

I tried the hildonised version and the non hildonised version.

IMHO the non hildonised version is much more better. I find the top bar easier and it seems to work with running from command line with file as argument (The hildon version gives out some weird error) and the default gtk file browser is more powerful than the hildon one.

Both versions (not installed at the same time) appear in menu after reboot.

Ok, I admit I didn't even try the new version..

Yes that's true that's annoying

I think the same. I used it 10mn ago and had the same thought. All my documents are in /home/user/docz and the filemanager widget can't access it.. BUt you know, it's a user-oriented thing, not a geek-oriented thing ;)

But I guess the new version doesn't handle the keyboard? Or it's just hw keys missing and full screen?

Gonna have a look..

Re: Leafpad

Version 0.8.10-1 available, update your application list.

Hardware keys:
  • - / + : Change font size
  • Fullscreen with middle button
  • Curved arrow is arbitrary mapped to "Find next"

Cheers

Just did a quick update and it looks pretty good to me. Certainly usable:)

Little nits:

I am using a BT keyboard and the keyboard mappings probably need some attention.

The green leafpad icon in the 'Extras' list is pretty fuzzy, and the icon is not used in the running programs list on the lhs of the screen.

When you save something it is difficult to enter an all lower-case filename using a keyboard. The first character defaults to UC and has to be typed and then deleted to get a lc character. Is this is a Hildon/GTK issue rather than Leafpad?

Yes the icon was made bigger because I had no internet when I updated this (I'll try to find one of this size on inet if it exists) and then enhanced it with a bit of gimp magic. I don't find it that fuzzy, much less than before.
For the lhs I'll have to look how to do this

Yes, that's a Hildon/GTK global setting.
Configuration panel->Text input->Case modifiying (fuzzy translation to english, don't know the exact names)

Thanks for feedback

I've been using pygtkeditor instead of leafpad and I think I'll stick with it, especially for on device python development as it offers a full toolbar, source code highlighting and the ability to launch the current program from inside the editor.

Good for you.

Some people (including me) have been begging for a working port of leafpad.

Thx for the update.

It seems that the double icons problem in the apps menu has been solved too.

About the lhs icon (mentioned by Dont), if I'm not wrong, it was appearing in the unhildonised version and for sure in the 2007 one. Maybe it helps.

Thanks Saturn.
Yes I know that it existed. Unfortunately a lot of little things changed from 2007-2008. Will look into this.
Also I have to find how to launch leafpad from the filemanager. It was not working in my last tests.

Re: Leafpad

Hi free,

Just tried the non-hildonized version of leafpad. I was mainly interested in the ability to open from xterm with a filename as a parameter. Anyhow, it's giving me this warning:

leafpad[1286]: GLIB WARNING ** GLib-GObject - gsignal.c:1019: unable to lookup signal "activate" of unloaded type 'GtkEntry'

Not sure how serious it is since it works, but I just thought you'd appreciate the heads up.

Thanks again!

Re: Leafpad

Quick reply...
Leafpad 0.8.17le.
Serious and reproducible (at least, for me) bug (it's possible it's a system bug triggered by leafpad; in any case, the same actions in vi don't reproduce the problem).
1. open X Terminal;
2. sudo gainroot (rootsh must be installed);
3. cd /etc/xdg/menus/
4. leafpad hildon.menu
5. edit something in the file (add a line, for instance)
6. menu->Save
7. UI is frozen; you cannot switch windows; you cannot close leafpad; Ctrl-Backspace doesn't go to thumbnails of windows; power key menu cannot be seen; you can charge the device and see the LED; you can slide the keyboard and see the lights turn on; slider works; power key allows you to shutdown.

The file is saved, as can be found after shut down - start up.

I have tried command
echo "$(leafpad hildon.menu)" > /home/user/echo
while reproducing the bug, but the echo file is empty after restart, no additional information.

What's wrong with my setup? I have updated to PR1.3 over the air, and all applications "just work", without problems.

How can I log more information about this lockup?
