aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum.

If you want to chat with your msn friends on Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE, you can do that with amsn right now and even with the webcam ! :D

Original thread here : http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3659

Ok, the new point is that you can chat with the webcam with other people without asking them to install Gizmo which is actually the only way for video chatting.

It's a fact that a lot of people use the Microsoft Windows Live client, so I think it's pretty cool.

I tried Gizmo project it's fine but it's not open source.

I tried Google talk but only voice is working. Google talk add festoon plugin at the time but now it seems to be dead. I see some videos of video chatting on youtube with google talk, I assume it was with this plugin.

There is the project telepathy-butterfly. It does not have yet the webcam support, but work is being done on that.

For now, I think if you want to do video-chatting with your msn friends, amsn is the only mean.

Maybe I missed something but the search button does not help me in this way.

I saw the thread of the guy asking for the porting of amsn on N800 but like this point is also related to N810 I decided to create a new thread in the general section, but maybe it can be moved in the apps section.

Sorry for my english

I tried installing amsn, i am using os2008 n800...says incompatible......shouldnt it work?

lokidor 2008-01-07 00:12

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

Try to download all the packages and install them with the command line:
dpkg -i "xxx.deb" (be sure to be root with "sudo gainroot" before)
in this order : tcl, tk, tcltls, libsnack2, amsn
I got this problem and mention it to the developer on the amsn forum.
I think you do better to post directly on the amsn forum, the developer needs some feedbacks and for the moment I have not seen anybody else than me to posts comments.

Tried what you told me says i need to be a superuser , once i put in sudo gainroot, it said enable rd mode if you want to break you device, didnt enable rd mode was i suppose to that?

I posted my problem in amsn forum see what they got to say

Hi,
Gadget25, I answered you on the amsn forums.
Thanks lokidor for submitting this here and allowing more people to know about aMSN.
For others, aMSN is the only open source msn client that supports webcam and voiceclips, and it works pretty good on the maemo platform (although it's a bit slow...)
Voiceclips are not correctly working but it will get fixed... for now you can receive them without problems.

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

Can someone post screenshots of aMSN in use ?

kakaroto 2008-01-07 20:16

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

Hi Kozzi,
I took the time to take a few screenshots for the pleasure of your eyes :
http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/~kakar...0/screenshots/
There are 22 images showing you many of the different features of aMSN and how they work on the n810 (webcam, tabbed chat, tray icon, offline messaging, file transfers, hide/show menus, event log, audio/vidoe assistant, drag/drop contacts, etc...).
If you feel I forgot something, tell me, I'll screenshot it :)

By the way, can anyone try the packages and tell me if it says incompatible .deb files or not ? and if it does, does anyone know how to fix it?

Gadget25 2008-01-07 21:25

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

Ya let me know when you can fix it because i cant use the command line i tried doesnt work for me

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

hhaaa, gadget25, I have a solution for you! I still don't know yet why it doesn't want to install but I now know why it installed on my n810 without complaining about the 'incompatible application package' error. You just need to enable the red pill mode. This is much easier than gaining root access.. here's how you can do it :
1 - open application manager
2 - click on the menu then 'tools' then 'application catalogue'
3 - Click on the 'New' button
4 - in the 'Web address' field, delete the 'http://' and write 'matrix'
5 - click on the 'cancel' button
6 - a popup will appear asking you "Which pill?" and two buttons, one "red" and one "Blue". click on the "Red" button.
7 - now close the application catalog window
8 - go to http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/~kakaroto/n810
9 - install the packages in this order : tcl8.4, tk8.4, tcltls, libsnack2, amsn
10 - go back to step 1 and when asked to choose which pill, click on the "blue" button this time and you're done!

p.s: I'm still trying to understand why it's incompatible when not in red pill mode.. if anyone can help.. please.. tell me.

Gadget25 2008-01-08 00:45

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

WoW thats awesome with the matrix thing never knew that part, what is the difference between red and blue if i may ask? BTW Your the man, thanks it worked woooooooohooo , I have no friends on Googletalk so if you want add me whoever wants to add me Gadget111@gmail.com or add me on msn.. Ymets2k02@hotmail.com :oD

Thanks so much again kakaroto

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

hehe, cool Gadget25, glad you made it work! :)
I'm no 'red pill expert', but as far as I know, red pill means 'advanced mode', the only differences I've seen so far is that :
1 - in red pill, when you click on the 'info' for a package, you can see its dependencies
2 - the check for compatible packages is disabled...

kakaroto 2008-01-13 11:37

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

As explained on aMSN's forums thread : http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/v...ic.php?p=26901

Quote:

Update : I fixed the problem with the 'incompatible package'. It was as you suggested from the start, the Section of the debian control file should be user/xxx. Once I changed that, application manager was able to accept the deb files I created.
I updated all the packages in the usual URL, so you can install them all without going into red pill mode.. I also added the following packages :
cabextract, gnash-common, gnash, libswfdec, swfdec-gnome.
Install cabextract, libswfdec and swfdec-gnome if you want to be able to receive winks. You will need to go to menu account->select plugins->winks->configure and set the 'swf player command' to 'swfdec-player' and empty the arguments field. You can also try to install gnash but it runs SO SLOW on the n810 that it's not worth it at all. I wrote all that in the README.txt file with some more info.

p.s: Note that you can hide/unhide the menus with the binding Ctrl-M. That could be useful if you don't want to see tk's menubar in your window.

Greetings:

With my N800 using 2008 OS, I tried to install amsn and it states that I'm missing these files: in this order : tcl, tk, tcltls.
Where do I the package for these files.

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

hello guys
hope you are all well...

i tried posting this yesterday but the post disapeared on me???
so here it is again...
i am new to linux & the n800
i followed kakaroto instructions but iīve never done this before.
its not installing.
1.)
i downloaded the files (tcl,tk,tcltl & amsn)
from the link to MyDocuments folder
2.)
tried installing but i got a message from the application manager saying it was incompatible.
3.)
so i proceded to x terminal and typed:
dpkg -i tcl8.4_8.4.13-1bora1_armel.deb
x terminal replied :
superuser priveleges required
4.)
so i entered :
sudo gainroot dpkg -i tcl8.4_8.4.13-1bora1_armel.deb
x terminal replied:
root shell enabled
and it ended saying /Home/user #

so these are my problems...
A.)
i still havenīt installed non of the programs.....(they simply never opened....)
B.)
what am i supposed to write (word by word)

I would really really apreciate it....
thanks in advance...hugs

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

yeah I saw yesterday where I messed up...
it was with the red pill

(I did it wrong by not deleting the http) so I figured I was at the red pill mode

and my second mistake was since I have the n800 when I read the thread, I thought the download link ;
http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/~kakaroto/n810/
was for the n810 and not for my model.

so I was installing the wrong files...

Thanks Xunil99
and yes it rocked
:o:):p:D:)

@kakaroto
can you setup a maemo repository with your packages?
it's easy. put your deb in dist/chinook/user/binary-armel dir
and run
dpkg-scanpackages dists/chinook/user/* | gzip > dists/chinook/user/binary-armel/Packages.gz

you can also create a .install file.
if you need some help about this contact me by mail at gnuton( n o ZS p a m )gnuton.org

cheers

Once I got it up and running last night the speed was OK. It's an easy way to transfer files from my PC to my NIT (and visa-versa).

Love the video conferencing with myself. (Me too. ;))

Many thanks, brilliant job. Very easy to install.
What happened to the wink .deb's? They are no longer on download page.

Well, for one thing it requires going into Red Pill mode to add some of the packages. These packages can't be added by default by the Application Manager.

This post by Kakaroto is a good tutorial on installing aMSN: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...9&postcount=12

Re: aMSN on maemo - Nokia N810, N800 and N770HE

I have a N800 with OS2008. I am able to see the video of the other person and they are able to see me. However, we can't hear each other. When I ran the "Edit audio and video settings" wizard the first time, I was able to hear a sound clip, and I was able to make a recording. However, now when I run the wizard again, I get an error message: "An error occured when trying to play the sound: could not open default or write." It also gives me the same error message when selecting "plughw:0" I also get an error message, "An error occured when trying to record the sound: could not open default or read." What is causing this? I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but I still get the same error message.

I noticed what my image and the image of the person i am chatting with is on two different windows. Is there a way that both video images are on the same window?

where can I find the libswfdec in order to speedup aMSN as described?

Quote:

There is also gnash if you want, but it will not work correctly, uses 100% of cpu and is so slow you can't see the wink playing...
swfdec is much much faster and works great so far!
To make winks work, after installing aMSN. go to the menu account->select plugins->winks->configure. Enter "swfdec-player" for the swf player, and no argument.
Note that swfdec doesn't know when a flash animation finishes, so it will run in loops, you will have to close it yourself manually.

Click the zoom key on your tablet, you should then be able to click the Next button. If that doesn't work for you, you can also click the checkbox that says something like "use low resolution web cam" and then click the next button once the image gets smaller.

I got aMsn working last night with Video (though my microphone isn't found, it give me an error though works in other apps like Skype)

It appears that the aMsn video stream is 10 seconds behind its input (e.g. I clap my hands on my laptop end of the chat and 10 seconds later I see myself clap my hands on my tablet in aMSN.)

1) Any thoughts on how to improve this performance?
2) Any thoughts on fixing the microphone input?
