Can anyone recommend a calc like EasyCalc for palm?
 

Hello there!
I'm a new n800 owner, and so far I've found this website to be the most useful resource for any problems with my n800 that I've had so far (and I've had many, mostly hardware problems).

I have owned Palm series devices for the last few years, and I've been recently started working on developing mobile software for myself, but I've found the Palm OS to be too limiting and hard to work with so I bought myself a n800.

The only one thing missing from my n800 is a calculator.
On my Palm TX I had EasyCalc installed, and I've loved using it--but the n800 doesn't have any calculators that work like EasyCalc does.
I know there's the Garnet VM to run EasyCalc in but it takes a while to load and isn't very efficient with the screen real-estate on the n800.

I would like to know if there is an equivalent to EasyCalc for the n800--or if there's a similar Linux application that performs similarly to EasyCalc that I could port.

What is it about EasyCalc that you need? Never seen the program so hard to know if I can recommend a replacement.

I'm not the OP, but I have also been looking for an alternative to the default calculator in OS2008. I basically want a decent scientific calculator, which must have an ln/e function. Multi-line display would be useful. I don't need graphing, but the OP might be looking for that (lybniz might work for that, if he needs that)

What I don't like about the built-in calculator is that you can't enter a long string of commands. Perhaps it is just a different (European?) style of calculator, but I find it very awkward to use. I am used to calculators like the TI-30XIIS, where you punch the full expression that you want and it shows up all on one line, then you hit "=" to get the answer.

I imagine that ANY other calculator that has been built for Maemo will be better for me than the existing one, so I'd just be interested to know what is out there.

Sorry if I am hijacking this thread, but hopefully this will also help the original poster.

Galculator looks very promising. I especially like the "paper" mode (screenshot http://galculator.sourceforge.net/im....3.0_paper.png)

Is there a port available on OS2008?

After searching (Technut would be proud!), I found another application that might serve the needs of the original poster as well as my own. MathJinni is billed as a "simple function calculator and plotter" on the Maemo site. http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/mathjinni/

Free42 is lurvely (http://www.tajuma.com/hp/) - rpn input takes a bit of getting used to after being used to algebraic input, but it's worth it IMO. It's working on OS2008 now as well.

DBlank- Thanks for the link, but I'm afraid I'm a little lost on what to do with that file. I saved it to the tablet, opened it in Application Manager (using "install from file"), but it gave an error message "Unable to install galculator. Incompatible application package". I am running OS2008, if that makes a difference.
(Confession: I'm a newbie and have only installed apps with one-click installs so far.)

I'm not sure why you get the error, is there anything under Tools -> Log?

I generally stick to the command line when installing things.

Try installing "becomeroot" from the application manager, then open up an X terminal, type "sudo gainroot", and finally change to the directory you saved the .deb file to (example: "cd /media/mmc2/downloads"), and type "dpkg -i galculator_1.3.1-1_armel.deb"
(without all of those double quotes)

I think the original poster isn't necessarily looking for a new or different calculator - but doesn't know where to find the default calculator on the N800 - Look in the utilities menu....

dblank: the problem will be that the package's Section in debian/control doesn't have a prefix of "user/".

This kind of Maemo-specific customisation is one of the many things which mud-builder helps with when porting:

First of all, thank you all for replying!

Bizshop - No, I know where the default calculator is, but my problem is that I really like the method of entry in EasyCalc -- almost exactly like galculator's 'paper' mode.

The only one problem I have with galculator that I've installed on my n800 is the fact that not all of the buttons are visible (some get cut off) and the popup keyboard gets in my way all the time.

The other thing that I'm not sure if galculator does or not is graphing.
I'll check out the link that slip sent me, that MathJinni program and let you all know how it works out.

DBlank - Thanks for your help with installing galculator. It took a while for me (first time using xterm and becomeroot, so I had a steep learning curve) and then had to go and find a more recent version of libglade.

I like the flexibility of galculator, with the different views, etc, but one thing that might make it not suitable for my purposes is the way it handles the constant "e". I often need to insert e into a formula, since I am often exponentiating beta coefficients from regression models (I'm an epidemiology student). There doesn't seem to be a way to insert e into an equation---it appears to just give put the value (2.718...) into the answer box.

MathJinni actually has a button just for "e", which is great for me. I find it annoying on my TI30x that in order to enter "e" you have to hit the 2nd key first (kind of like hitting CAPSLOCK). For that reason alone, I might stick with MathJinni.

It would be great to have a special handwriting input mode that emphasized mathematical terms, but I imagine that is more of a pipedream.

EDIT: By the way, does anyone know if Tim Teulings is a member of InternetTabletTalk? I was thinking of doing a mock-up of some visual design changes to the primary calculator interface (such as enlarging or changing color of "=" button, increasing text size of numerals)

So the application manager fails to install if Section is "unknown"?

That's lame :)

I just tried installing via the manager on mine, and it installed fine, but then I realized I was in "red pill mode", so it seems red pill mode, or manually using dpkg -i don't care what the section is.

I guess I'll start setting the category properly for all those "blue pill" application manager users!

Well, it's a limitation to stop all the lib* etc. showing up in the UI.

Personally, I can find better ways of doing it - but then many things with Maemo seem sub-optimal to me (but having worked in large organisations I can see where they came from).

I just downloaded MathJinni, and the first thing I noticed was that the expression:
returned an error, whereas in EasyCalc it would have returned a proper '6'.

Oddly enough, expressions like
don't work either...

Does anyone know why this would be?
I should probably contact the author and inform him/her about this problem.

Other than that little blip, I think I've found my maemo calculator!

I guess the developer hasn't built it to interpret that as a multiplication expression. If you put 3*(4-1), it will give you the correct answer of 9.

You could also try Garnet VM and run Easycalc like that.
