I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Hey there. I'm getting my new n800 tomorrow. I've used this board a couple times in my search for answers before buying, and had a few tricky questions about it. Since the 'waiting for my toy to get here' angst is building up.
1. If installed Firefox or used the built in brower, can I use it to upload photos I just took with the built in camera? 2. Can I use bluetooth with a Samsung Stripe (T-Mobile) for cellular internet? 3. Can it play Flash animations/applications? 4. I read that i can use other nokia chargers and batteries for the 800? 5. What are ya'll favorite apps for the n800? Thanks, Deadpan.. eagerly awaiting his new tool. |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
1. Keep in mind the camera produces low quality photos. However, it is possible to capture images for uploading to hosting sites via the built in browser (microB).
2. probably 3. yes 4. umm... not sure what you mean here...? 5. Other than the preinstalled stuff I like rdesktop, EightyOne (sudoku), Battlegewld, mauku, pidgin, and a few others i can't think off offhand. |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
I mean. If I wanted to get a second charger for the 800 do I need to get it custom or can I use a standard nokia charger and/or battery.
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
4) Yes, you can use a normal nokia phone charger... also true for batteries however there have been complaints about poor quality knockoffs and even rumours of them exploding, so it may be best to buy from a reputable source.
5) Vagalume, Canola 2, Video center, OM Weather, Transmission, Mplayer, Pidgin, ScummVM are a few off the top of my head. |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
I think all/most Nokia chargers are the same. I know all the internet tablet chargers and batteries are the same (n770,n800,n810). They battery they use is the BP-5L.

Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Yay for spare parts then.
Yes, beware fake Nokia batteries. Not only do they suck, but they might explode in your pants. .... now if only I could get custom faceplates for it as well. Another question, what do you recommend for IRC? Still Pidgin or something specific? |

As for chargers, and 2mm Nokia charger will work (AC-4 and DC-4). So any Nokia phone you might have used from 2006 on would give you a spare charger. Gotta love standard off the shelf parts. :) |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
And... just for laughs.
VNC can be used to log into my PC, not /just/ the other way around, right? Just want to make sure. I'm sure the anwser is yes but I can't find any results on it. Just "oh look, I can use my PC to log into an internet tablet!" :D |

Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
The smaller Nokia chargers (390mAh or thereabouts) work fine, but it takes longer to charge than with the larger ones (and the NITs come with a large one) rated to 890mAh.
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Avoid buying "high power" battery from Amazon. Scam. Get a lower rating non branded phone batt. Ok it fits and works but not as long as OE.
Yep this fool did :) |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Replacement non-original batteries are mostly junk (not just for Nokia, for all devices using brand-name lithium ion batteries). Due to the total lack of standards, testing, or reliable ratings, suppliers are free to put whatever rating they want on a barely-functional battery made as cheaply as possible, with the expected results. Given the huge disparity in cost between original brand-name batteries and replacements, it may still be worth experimenting. But until we see some reliable standards, your chances of finding a good replacement battery at random are pretty slim.

Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Deadpan, did you ever get your n800 paired with your Samsung Stripe? I've not been able to do so.
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
I found a couple of good replacement cheap batteries; in other words, every one I tried was good (except for a Nokia battery).
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
No. It would appear the Samsung Stripe does not have data modem capaiblity. GRanted. I got it cause I just wanted a phone, and it works great as a phone, but it's only rally supports earpeices and handsfree devices.
Oh well. |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
GET A CASE FROM EBAY AND A SCREEN PROTECTOR
yeah sure sure many people will say "i havent had one for a year and im fine" BUT on the chance that some stupid thing happens (like mine, which fell on the angled edge of a dumbell, on its screen, and now the touchscreen wont work), u'll be glad. |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Ummm, no. If that particular stupid thing happens, I'm pretty sure it's toast either way. But, yeah, buying a screen protector probably makes sense for the lesser stupid things; I haven't had one on my N800, and won't get one. But when I get my N900, I'm buying one.
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Benson, has your screen held up well? I was wondering about a screen protector, but am not sure. I am very consicentious about devices, so on my behalf, there probably won't be any issues. I intend to keep the one that comes pre-applied on the device for as long as possible anyway, hehe ;)
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
Well, except for the time I shoved it in the pocket with my keys without it's leather pouch. :( Poor thing got a scratch out of that. Other than that, it's been fine. I consider myself conscientous, too, but had an attack of stupid when thinking about something else.
Anti-glare screen protectors are said to help with reading in daylight, and protect from stupid stuff, so when I get a shiny new device, I'll get one. The one that's pre-applied is not a regular screen protector; if you want a screen-protector, get a real one. That one is not very wear-resistant at all, and messes with the touch, too. |

Maybe I'm too precious about the original battery. |

im pretty sure if i had a protector and a jacket on it it'd'of bounced right off |
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
A screen protector, and it lands on the screen on a corner? Ooookay... I don't think it would have survived with touchscreen intact, but short of slapping a screen protector on mine and dropping it the same way, I can't prove it. And I ain't doing that.
You say with a jacket now; I guess I assumed you were using it when it fell, in which case you'd have had it out of the case. Sure, a padded case would stand a good chance, but... I don't drop mine when I'm not using it, as a rule. <shrug /> |

Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
A question but not worth to start another thread: Can I use my AC-3A (Australian charger. For you American's: AC-3U) with my N800? It outputs 5V and 350 mA's. I just wanted to know because the one I bought off EBay comes with the AC-4U American charger. Gosh why can't the world have a universal power system :S
|
Re: I get my n800 tomorrow, a few silly questions.
If your charger has the small pin of newer Nokia chargers (2mm I believe), then yes, you can use it. But 350mA is a bit underspec'ed compared to the standard charger (890mA), so it'll take more than twice as long to charge it. I.e. 4-5 hours instead of a bit above 2 hours.

OK I'm going to buy a AC-4A because I need this one to charge my 6300. I think I'm too noob to hack it :P
