Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
I don't know how I missed it all this time (possibly b/c usually on my mac) but last night I just saw that you can browse Windows file shares in Filemanager in 2008.
What through me off was seeing the Samba stuff was not installable, so I guess I figured it was "on the way" and not here. I did notice that the only way to refresh the shares seemed to be by reloading Filemanager, but perhaps I missed something. So, I posting this because maybe someone else missed it and just needed a heading that was a little different. THIS is a very useful feature. |
Re: Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
Are you able to see all of the shared directories on your Windows machine? I'm asking because, while I can see the shared drive (and access it), it's empty (i.e., all I can do is open the drive -- I can't actually see any other folders/files).

Re: Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
I can see all the shares on my Xp box. I just got browsing my XP shared folders working a few days ago. My issue was that my Norton firewall had to be configured to allow the N800 to access them. Before that I could not see any shares, not even the computer.

possible thread hijacking...
would samba on linux show differently than shared drives on a windows machine in FileManager? how do i set up FileManager so that i can see my shares? i think i read that user authentication is not supported as of yet. is this true? |
Re: Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
Tim, I can access the shares on 1 XP 64 PC and 2 Vista PCs. Vista took some configuring, of course.

Samba on linux will show as well providing your shares are set up correctly to allow anyone's access.

What I'd like to know is how to access my memory card folders from a Windows PC via wi-fi... Can it even be done ?
|
Re: Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
Yup , it can be done via Putty (a ssh client)

You cannot browse shared folders that require authentication. Hopefully, that will change in time.

Re: Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
Viewing and browsing windows xp-shares on my N810 worked from the beginning with the inbuild filemanager. I have copied some files from my xp-notebook over wifi.
After having installed some applications, it isn't possible anymore. I have tried often, but don't work. Pinging my xp-pcs was and is no problem after becoming root on N810, but the filemanager doesn't see the shares anymore. Any adice? |

During installation, it will ask for a root password. That's all you have to do on the tablet end. You now have a SSH server and client installed. Install Putty on your PC - this is for command line access to your tablet from a Windows PC. To setup the connection you enter either the hostname of the NIT or its local IP. You login as root, and can execute commands in the tablet. You can browse to your memory cards by: cd /media/mmc1 or cd /media/mmc2 For something more sophisticated (GUI), I think I downloaded EngInSite DataFreeway once to try out. I don't use my XP box to SSH into my tablet often, I do that mostly from my Ubuntu Server. |
Re: Browsing Windows Shares in 2008
We have two windows computers on our network and I can see shared files from XP but not from w2k. I can see the shared w2k computer from File manager but it says (no files/folders) when accessing it.
I'm not sure if it's because of the OS or the firewall (Sygate). Any ideas how can I get this work? ... I can answer this myself. It was the Sygate firewall. |
