Reclaim some of the internal memory
 

Browsing around on my N810 I have identified a number of items that you can safely delete on your OS2008 to reclaim 10-20 MB of space:

/home/user/MyDocs/.documents
-contains a subfolder with the Handbooks in various languages
-contains a file osso_software_copyright.pdf

/home/user/MyDocs/.images
-contains the default images for the "Images" application (especially the Pine_forrest.jpg - which Nokia might have forgotten to resize when putting it into the firmware... it is 3 MB, at 1600x960 pix, while all other images are 800x480 at 300-400 kB)

/home/user/MyDocs/.sounds
-contains the promo music

/home/user/MyDocs/.videos
-contains the promo videos

(If you use the File Manager to do this, just select your device name, then browse through the localized subfolders such as "Documents")

Yup, this goes for ANY internet tablet. The OS's always come with a bunch of crap (a song or two, pictures, those .pdf's, etc.)

There are maps in there you may not use, some are 100gb

Thank you, but the thread title seems misleading because these files are stored on the 256MB Device Memory, not the 2GB Internal "card".

You're correct. Mea culpa - Looks like I've troubles adopting to the new concept of "internal" memory on the N810!

Well the two new music videos are stored into the internal 2Gb "card" for a total size of more than 40Mb :p

Is it is possible to upgrade the on-board storage memory of the N800 from 256MB to say, 4 or 8 GB? That would make for an interesting project

The 256Mb is on the TI OMAP chip itself AFAIK and that can't be touched at all.
What can be changed, but you need professional tools for that, is the internal 2Gb of the N810.
But you're talking about the N800, so I'll stop here stating it can't be changed, again, AFAIK.

What 'professional tools' and steps does one take to replace the internal 2GB in the n810? I have not opened mine up yet (other then the battery compartment and looked around briefly).

It is very frustrating on the n810 and n800 to only have 256 MB of program storage, even with the inclusion of the 2 GB onboard, as the 2 GB is FAT formatted. I think that is one of the main reasons that people clone their OS to SD and boot from that instead. I've hit the wall a few times and it is frustrating. At the same time, I see Nokia's desire to have the NITs act a USB mass storage when plugged into a Windows/Mac box.

I am really hoping the next NIT has more ram and flash and a return to full size SDHC slot(s) or at least Micro instead of Mini Slots.

BTW, if you were thinking about just using a soldering iron and slapping some higher capacity chips in place, don't bother. You need access to expensive surface mount rework equipment, higher density pin compatible chips to replace the ones you remove and there are probably software changes that would need to take place as well. There is one company I know of that specializes in doing this sort of thing. They are called Pocket PC Techs and used to do a lot of ram and flash upgrades on Win CE PDAs.

Engadget shows how to make a tool for SMT rework here, so you could try if you really wanted to. Not recommending it, but where there's a will, there's a way.

Anyone? No options to replace the internal mmc card? I assume it is an SD card of some kind (looking at 'mount' it still shows up as /mnt/mmc1 does it not?

By 'internal mmc' I *don't* mean the 256MB flash where the OS resides - I'm talking about the 2GB storage where all the GPS maps (and other junk) resides :D

Check out the dual boot stuff the KDE folk have been doing.
Some of them are booting from the internal card.
Lots of room to move around in, if you're looking for program storage.

This might be off topic, but for my n800 I'm running ext3 partitions on my 512M internal card and on my 8G secondary card. No extra OS parts were needed to have these partitions automounted. The 8G file system was created while my tablet was USBed to a Kubuntu machine, but I think e2fsprogs and such are in a repository if that is your preference.

I'm not looking for program space. I want to replace the internal 2GB 'card' (if there actually is a card?) and drop in an 8GB card. This along with the external card would give me 16GB of storage for music/videos. Once miniSDHC cards goto 16/32GB a card one could upgrade one or both to increase storage :)

Good for you. Me, I'll just wait for bigger MiniSDHCs for my N810.
The OP, however, and several of the replies,
were looking for more program space.
