CA-100 spitting out 6,5V. WTF??

I got a soshine USB battery pack and a ca-100 charge cable. The soshine works fine on everything i charge with it, but with the ca-100 it makes a very unnerving sound even if the cable is plugged into the pack onloy and not the n800. It sounds like a mini tesla coil, small constant spark sounds, but i opened it and everything looks fine. I took apart the ca-100, and saw it has a small cuircuit. Why in gods name?? the nokia charger is 5V, so is USB! The cuircuit apparently upscales the voltage as the ca100 spits out 6,5V form the soshine, while a normal USB cable spit out 5V like it should. I cant make heads or tails of this as it seems illogical to up the voltage to more than the ac charger. The soshine outputs up to 1000mah so it should even be able to handle the 890mah of the nokia... any sane explenation is welcomed!

If you actually measure what the '5v' nokia AC-4U/E adapter gives you it is in fact ~6V too. I've seen like 5 of these adapters, some above 6V some slightly below. I guess the voltage may go down when there is any current draw but did not have chance to measure it while connected and charging. It is a mystery to me too why they label it 5V. So the reason why it gives 6V is that maybe some Nokia phones might actually need those 6V.

you should first understand difference between mA and mAh. It is highly unlikely you can get AAA rechargeables that can give you current of 890mA like the AC adapter, most probably they give you below 500mA so charging will be slower. On the other hand they may really have capacity of 890mAh (which is not enough to charge the 1500mAh battery fully).

The rechargeable AAA's are 900mAh, in my head thats about an hour of charging fully but im not too into transfer rates and whatnots.

Good thing the 6,5V is normal though, but still doesnt explain why the battery pack is making that sound. Might be a damaged ca100, or something that just doesnt work somewhere. I have ordered more of the ca100 so will try with those

The 6.5v, remember, is when the supply is under no load (no current draw to cause voltage drop). You'll need to hack it up, but try checking what the voltage is when it's actually running the N800.

It charges fine when plugged in... but the noise is seriousely bothering me, it simply cant be right. Here's an audio recording of the sound the battery pack makes when charging the N800:

Look at this thread:
Quote:

6.1 Charger voltage measurement

When a charger is connected to the mobile device, the device's system will start the charger-recognition procedure by checking the charger voltage with 1 – 2 mA current. Identification is based on measured average voltage and waveform: 4.65 V – 5.20 V is identified as a special charger and 5.5 V - 9.3 V is identified as a standard charger.

doesnt explain why the battery pack is making that noise -.-

Re: CA-100 spitting out 6,5V. WTF??

No, but it explains why the ca-100 steps up the voltage. According to the comments on dx it seems the output is not regulated, so the usb plug probaby goes straight to the batteries, and that makes the sound even more strange. I can't explain it, sorry.

Re: CA-100 spitting out 6,5V. WTF??

i dont think thats the problem, as 4 brand new non rechargables are ~6-6,5V, and same issue with those. but in the end i think all i can do is get a different USB battery

Is it really the battery pack and not the chip inside CA-100 usb plug?

when i took apart the ca100 now it sounded like both -_- tried to pinpoint it but either it really is both or i have no idea

edit: wondering about http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3060 - looks nice
