Nokia N800(810) ART!
2 Attachment(s)
I figure I would start a thread, if there isn't one already, where people could discuss and/or post art they have made on the n800 or 810. So here is a couple simple pieces made with xournal. I loaded the photos as backround images and then did some sketching on top! Actually with the self portrait I took the photo I used with the n800's camera. I just wish I could jump between layers! Does someone know how to do this!
pics: 1. song of myself ;-) 2.song of O'Neill Does anyone know of any good/better apps for art on the n800? I couldn't get Faint to work. I am missing some needed something or others. ;) |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
You're talented. Have you tried installing KDE and using krita?
|
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Thanks!
I have tried kde but krita wouldn't launch :( I have a bunch of things that are going wrong with my n800, software wise, that I don't feel like rolling up my sleeves and digging into just yet. Do you know of an app that can reduce the brightness and contrast of photos on the n800? That would be a big help! Also, it looks like you had some fun with that sketch! Did you try Airx and gimp yet? I have to read up on how in the hell Airx works! |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Well I am going to keep this thread going damn it, even if I have to post replies to myself!
I found that KDE's basic paint program allowed me to adjust brightness and contrast on photos. This could be a work around. Boot into KDE, adjust the photos you want to use in xournal, then shut down KDE and load the photos into xournal. It would be better if you could just paste the photo into a layer in xournal (or some other more appropriate app :) then dim the layer's transparency to half or so, and work right in the native maemo enviorment but alas this, as I can see, can't be accomplished....yet. But...there is still one problem, KDE didn't allow me to save my dimmed images to mmc...thinking back, I don't think I even got a chance to load them, it wouldn't let me do that either. So, while you feasibly COULD adjust brightness and contrast in KDE, you can't load or save them? Anyone have that problem or figure it out yet? |

It had a useful cloning tool too for touching up photos. Also there was some talk on the mailing lists about using the pressure sensitivity of the tablet touch screen to vary brush widths and also using the tablet as an bluetooth pressure sensitive tablet peripheral for your regular computer. But I don't think either of those ideas ever went anywhere. I am hoping that I am wrong. Here is the relevant URL: http://pippin.gimp.org/horizon/ ... I see there is an armel binary but I have my doubts that it would work for OS2008 without some recompiling of the source ... which is also available there. |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
I'm a graphic designer but I only tried a little sketching with the sketch program. Faint is too slow and cluttered for direct artwork on my N800.
I still think the tablet & stylus would make a great, handheld sketching device. But I'm still looking for a fast, simple intuitive program where you could mix, apply and blend colors naturally. Horizon looks promising, but I no longer have my 770. |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Very nice!
|
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Just to be consistent: there is a great app, called MyPaint, which shows real promise for making art on the tablet. Here is the link to that thread, which has discussion and download info: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...d.php?p=150898

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Nice sketches, awe215. Here are a couple I did with the built-in sketch app a while ago.

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Damn! That is some serious ink work! I never considered the built in sketch app for that kind of serious art. Great! ;-)

a horizon dev compiled for os2008 not the best app. but at least it make use of the fullscreen. |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Could you tell us what this app is? An art app?
|
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Check that. For some reason I had to run it from Xterm but it shows promise! Any way to change brushes? It seems like it would make a really great notebook app! I'll draw some with and post it here ;-)

here's a couple I did on mtpaint....

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
I guess those layers are coming in handy ;-)
|
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
no layer usage.....
sometimes i forget i even have layers... and that was the case with this parrot. plus its kinda confusing using the layers in mtpaint. lots of blur tool action... Quote:

using the dotted brushes.... I think Im in love again with my tablet... |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
MyPaint got me excited, but the three screen implementation was so clunky that I couldn't dive in like I wanted. I guess the issue is that I don't "have to" sketch on the tablet, so a half baked UI interaction can dissuade me and leave me to other solutions.
Xournal is pretty nice for notes, but doesn't quite cross the line beyond that. Those sketches above are nice. My sketches (of UI designs and flows) end up being not nearly as elegant. I've just held back and use paper and pencil/pen. But I am really waiting with bated breath for a sketching/drawing solution that makes the tablet shine. So Awe215, I applaud your effort, and the efforts of the folks who have given us MyPaint, Xournal and the others. I'm still waiting, and I am still optimistic! |

The main problem I have been having is: hiccups on the tablet i.e. you draw a line and a second or two later it appears. In real life it is real time, so when the tablet can emulate that, that is when the ball will really roll. I think this maybe a hardware issue i.e. limitation of the tablet based on cpu and ram.
I have just given airx a go. It seems to show some promise in that it gives the tablet a shot at gimp, albeit, not natively. There is a slight lag, like what I mentioned above. I don't know if that is on the tablet or my computer side of things. But, it's alot of fun to play with! I am posting a little 2 minute sketch I did. |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
I've been waiting on a paint app for the longest.
It really doesn't matter if hildon or not. fullscreen was the main thing I wanted, I wanted to use more of the canvas. mtpaint gives me this. I guess if you know what you are doing, its pretty easy to overcome the other slight obstacles. the pauses, hiccups, etc. keep drawing people....we need to flood ITT with digital art. |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
What interest me most is turning the tablet into a sketch book of sorts. I don't think, at the moment, I found the ability to do that. At least with mtpaint, when the painting pauses, it doesn't try and catch up, i.e. fill in what it should have, it just stops. So you don't get the "catch up" problem (or ketchup :P), which I find the most annoying.
Unique311, have you tried airX with gimp? |
Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
nope.
never interest me. Quote:

But here is one I made today. I was experimenting with doing a wash of a mid-tone on the background, then sketching, then using the eraser. Fun ;-) |

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
If anyone is interested.
Xjournal allows you to insert a photo in background and you can draw, color and put text on the photo itself and save as a pdf or xjournal file. I've been making some very cool modern art with my photos and tagging them with graffiti and text. The files are too big to post. When I have time I'll upload to flickr and post. I have a file named Horizon that my works go into(I don't remember if I created it, oh well it works for me). I also use mtpaint and mypaint. Lots of fun. Dan |

mtpaint does what you speak of also.
with layers. open up a picture and make a new layer. draw away.. well similar. Quote:

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
unique311 I discovered that feature before I wrote that post mtpaint is slower than xjournal although it mtpaint has many more features. I prefer mtpaint now that I found that feature, MyPaint does the same. BTW your art is real good!!! Thanks for neogeo. It's an awesome port.Dan

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
you guys are trying to get me killed..
Tak is the developer for the gngeo emu... I just ported and hildoned xgngeo frontend to maemo, for use with the gngeo. as for mypaint...having issues with it.... never really got into xournal much. I was just waiting on mtpaint and mypaint hildonization. and i got it. but mtpaint is the fav. Quote:

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
I can see mtpaint/mypaint being a big hit on the n810....
the chun li drawing, hmm colorpicker is key. does mypaint or mtpaint even have a colorpicker tool? also other key important things are brush opacity and flow settings. if these can be mapped to hardware keyboard, and made available in either mypaint/mtpaint. the chun li drawing can be done easily. Not saying with some hard work it cannot be done right now. A drawing done using what i describe above and only what i described above in photoshop. http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1196077219 Quote:

Re: Nokia N800(810) ART!
Wow. NICE PIC.
I have the colorpicker key mapped to 'f''. You can map it to other buttons in drawwindow.py |

My N800 vs. my "Notepad 800"
Here are two sketches done of the same shell, 20 minutes apart from one another. The n800's was done first. The light is natural i.e. from the sun coming in from the window; although, for the second sketch, done with the notepad, the lighting was better. Hence the further I got with the n800's sketch the darker I made it because at the time, it was. I plan on doing some more of these. I am going to stay with black and white, relatively, and try working on comparisons of sketches from life. note: the n800 sketch was done in MyPaint and I found that, as Uniquie311 had found before, the left side of the tablet was relatively unresponsive. I am going to post in the MyPaint thread about this problem. note 2: The paper sketch is a photo, not a proper scan, that mid tone wash is not the color of the paper or my doing, but I like it! |

A cup, not a vase....
What might be interesting is to use a mix of brushes in one sketch. Come in with a light pencil to lay down a sketch and give it some shape, then use the charcoal to hit the darks and lights; or vice versa. I tried some experimentation on this cup, I know, it looks like a vase. I hid the handle to keep myself out of trouble! |

Here is a some of, well, stuff, the O'Neill is an alternate version of the first one I did, which kicked off this thread, and the other is done in MyPaint. |
