Weather app(s)?
Other than OMWeather, I'm a little surprised that a more robust weather app hasn't been developed/released. (unless I just haven't found it yet...)
I use My-Cast on my mobile phone (scp8400) pretty much constantly, especially during times of severe weather, and the NIT just begs for a similar type of app. Does anyone know if any 'larger' weather apps are in the pipeline anywhere? |
Re: Weather app(s)?
Why don't you like OMWeather?
What does it lack? |
Re: Weather app(s)?
As a widget-type app, OMWeather is great and I like how it's always available right there on the desktop. Using MyCast as an example to compare to however, it lacks a number of things.
No GPS support. No severe weather alerts. No severe weather info. No radar loops. No informational maps such as windspeed, dew points, lightning strikes, etc... Pilot MyCast goes even further by adding a number of items pilots need such as raw metar and taf data, wind speeds aloft, icing and turbulence maps, etc |
Re: Weather app(s)?
I personally found OMweather to be a very nice program. The only thing I found is that I don't think it showed actual "current temperature", just the highs and lows that had been 'forecasted'. Am I incorrect in this?
|
Re: Weather app(s)?
- IIRC, when i tap 'update' on the first icon on my desktop after the update, the tooltip dialog has the current temp: "Now xx"
- on my desktop or notebooks, forecastfox is used in the browser, so it's always available... - however, on the IT, i don't think everyone keeps a browser window open, so it makes sense to use the desktop? (IMHO, omweather is a 'must have' for my tablets! but yes, alerts would be nice) |
Re: Weather app(s)?
totally off topic, but I never got the love for weather widgets/apps/status stuff...
I just look outside the window... |

Doesn't recognize Dubai, UAE, so I can't get weather updates from here :(

Re: Weather app(s)?
@ghoonk: If you click "Add Custom Station" and put in AEXX0004 for your "Station code" it should work fine. :)

and added it to my list. Weather has been updated. No problem. Version of OMWeather 0.19.5 Vlad |
Re: Weather app(s)?
For some reason, I don't get to choose country and stations. Country drop down box is greyed out. Same for State and Station.
I can add Custom Station though. No idea why. I'm on 0.19.5, downloaded from the developer's homepage |

This is interesting. What version of OS is installed on your device? Can you show me files in /usr/share/omweather. In xterm: ls -la /usr/share/omweather Vlad |

Thanks for the continued work on OMWeather :) |

I've got that greyed location combo issue several times, but each time I've got it working just fine when I rebooted, connected to the net manually and tried again. Maybe omweather doesn't properly detect network availability when wifi connection has been initiated because of it - I'm not sure what's the faulty scenario here. |

Forecasting however is what I'm most interested in. Again, using MyCast as the example, I can see precipitation radar loops of my area or the whole country. I like to see what's out there and possibly coming. A icon showing clouds and snowflakes with tomorrow's date doesn't quite give enough info. But paired with a map showing a huge area of green and white radar bounces that stretch across 3 states moving your way... Better make sure there's gas in the snowblower. Same with the lightning strike loops and wind speed indicators. What's exactly going on in that big patch of red and yellow on the radar that's going to be here in an hour or so? And although I don't travel too much, when I do I like being able to pull up the current turbulence maps and radar for the areas I will be flying through. Unfortunately the extent of my coding skills doesn't reach much past the 'hello world' stage (and I usually screw that up. :) ), so I'll just patiently wait for another fellow 'weather nut' who can put one together. |
Re: Weather app(s)?
Reinstalled, rebooted, and it's working fine now. Had uninstalled it earlier, so I wasn't able to check for error messages.
Thanks, guys :) |
Re: Weather app(s)?
My beef with OMweather is that it uses weather.com as its source. NOAA.gov (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is a much more accurate source with very detailed forcasts and severe weather warnings.

First. Install icon sets from web pages of project: http://omweather.garage.maemo.org/icon_sets.html Second. Install from Application Manager Third. Manually install to directory /usr/share/omweather/icons directory with icon sets. For example you can take various icon sets from liquid project http://liquidweather.net/icons.php Then don't forgot to change "icon set" in preference of OMWeather. Vlad |

Re: Weather app(s)?
Maybe you could give us novices a little help with how exactly to get the new icons to the correct folder. I tried to copy it there in xterm and it wouldn't let me. Here is what I typed after gaining root and navigating to the mmc2 card (internal on n800):
cp 7even /usr/share/omweather/icons/ '7even' is the folder extracted from the 7even.tar.bz2. Do I have to leave it in the .tar.bz2 format? Thanks. |
Re: Weather app(s)?
I would also like to know how to add icons there. I get Access Denied when I try.
|
Re: Weather app(s)?
Why not just get it via Application Manager? That's what I did, and it's so much easier.
|
Re: Weather app(s)?
ghoonk, are you saying that you dl the .tar file from liquid weather then installed it via the app mgr ?
|
Re: Weather app(s)?
No, I'm saying that the liquid weather icons are available in one of the repos, that's how I downloaded mine -- from the App Manager, not using a wget -install from XTerm

Small instruction. (I do not bear any responsibility) 1. load xterm 2. Change user to root "sudo gainroot" 3. apt-get install wget bzip2 4. Change directory "cd /usr/share/omweather/icons" 5. Download for example POD iconset 'wget "http://www.liquidweather.net/phpmv2/phpmyvisites.php?url=http%3A//mirror1.liquidweather.net/Pod.tar.bz2&id=1&pagename=FILE:Icons%3APod"' 6. Unpack bzip archive "bzip2 -d Pod.tar.bz2" 7. Unpack tar archive "tar xf Pod.tar" 8. Move files from Pod/large_icons directory to Pod directory "mv Pod/large_icons/* Pod" 9. Rename N/A icon "cd Pod;mv na.png 48.png" 10. Change iconset to Pod in OMWeather settings 11. This the end. Good luck Vlad. |
