Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Hi all,
I'm hoping to connect thumb drives and other assorted media to my N810 while I'm out and roaming. I'll be living out of my backpack for 6 months so weight is a big issue for be as is bulk. I'd like to find a USB micro-male to Type A female connector or very short (like 5-10cm). So far I haven't had any luck. Does anyone here know where to get one? I'm looking for the opposite of this http://www.vastercable.com/images/17602-V-1.jpg Cheers, Craig |

Not exactly what you want but should do the trick when combined with a readily found female-to-female USB adapter. I am ordering one right now. /Mike |

I'm also on the hunt for a USB Male - Nokia 2mm converter. My idea is to charge the N810 from the wall via a USB power brick and also from a solar charger. Keeping one plug type means I can connect three power sources (wall, solar panel, Solio) to each of three devices (iPod, GPS data logger, N810) depending on what source is working. |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Nokia CA 101 I think : USB to 2mm
or brando has it ... |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Ahh, the CA 100 is the job, I'll look around for a knock off of that with a really short cord

Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
To get from micro B to mini B, http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-micro.../dp/B000Y032X8
miniB to USB-F is common (and the above cable can be modified to switch into host mode for USB keys - a switch between the brown and black wires inside makes it an instant A/host adapter) The mini-B to USB-A-Female adapters are also common. I found a retractable usb to nokia charger cable at a truck stop / travel center (Pilot, I think), but the ccm accessories (via Amazon, save a bit on shipping) also has a normal to tiny charger adapter: http://www.amazon.com/CA-44-Nokia-Ch.../dp/B0009RFX24 I have some other accessories that use the larger charger, so this allows me to charge the tablet too. |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
So you're saying that is I use this device - "ZIP-ADP-C09", and coupled that with an F-F USB cable, I could use external USB devices connected directly to my n810 without modifying the cables?

Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
I just happen to have spent half the night searching and trying to figure out the exact adapter, among other places Amazon has it listed for $ 5.99 US.
It's called a USb 5 pin mini male to USB A female. This is the adapter needed for the N800, not sure if N810 has the same output. |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
No, the N810 uses a micro.
|
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
The n810 needs a MICRO-B male, or the one you listed plus the mini-to-micro I listed.

dang, you got me all excited then.
|
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Just so I am clear, the cable that comes with the 810 is insufficient to use with a female to female adapter to get out to a thumb drive because the pin settings are wrong?
|
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Correct, but you can probably use USBControl to switch between master and slave
http://konttoristhoughts.blogspot.co...-easy-way.html It's impractical for me because of the size of the cable too. |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
The pins of the original cable are right, but it does not throw it into host mode automatically. The scripts work, or get one of the micro-b to mini-b adapters, scrape back the insulation and shielding and solder a small switch between the black and brown wires. The switch "on" (shorting) makes it an "A". Then get a retractable mini-B to USB A - the whole thing will be more compact.
http://www.x-tremegeek.com/templates...categoryID=308 has shorty cables and camera lanyards that turn into miniB to usbA. |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Thanks IntreidAnitpodean2 for the USBControl Link. It works great and I didn't even have to modify the cables. I used the Motorola SKN6252A Micro USB-B Male to Mini USB-B Female adapter coupled with the mini USB-B Male to USB-A Female adapter.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y032X8 BTW, I have a N810. The USBControl program is simple and it just works without any X-term typing so even a newbie like me can use it. I have gotten the USB thumbdrives to work and also a USB keyboard. It's so cheap to buy these adapters, I bought 3 and modded 1 with the soldering method. It works, but not very professional looking. I would suggest you buy extra adapters and play around with them since it costs next to nothing. |

Dang, so close:
USB A Male to Micro B Male Adapter http://www.cablesunlimited.com/produ...roupcode=I3648 USB A Male to Micro A Male Adapter http://www.cablesunlimited.com/produ...roupcode=I3647 With a f-to-f adapter, this is the closest to the single-piece for micro to A female that we've been looking for. And which should I go for, Micro A or B? |

The second is a pair of plain solar panels I got from SparkFun.com. They run through a voltage regulator a friend made up to make sure it doesn't bust out more than 5v (USB spec). Last year I had those panels mounted on the top of my pack (wrapped around my sleeping mat) and charged my GPS for 6 months straight. |

Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Sorry dude, I never even installed USBControl, I don't like the way it
is packaged with UKMP and I haven't got a suitable cable set up yet. You'll have to try on the forums or ask the author. ~Craig On 9/02/2008, at 6:08 AM, jorthodoc @ Internet Tablet Talk Forums wrote: > This is a message from jorthodoc at Internet Tablet Talk Forums ( http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/index.php > ). Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
I think I've read about 3,000 posts about USB cable adapters and haven't really seen anything completely clarified yet. I admit to being a little confused on whether I need micro B or micro A, but that's mostly after reading about USB on Wikipedia.
Anyway... Will this work: http://www.cyberguys.com/product-det...roductid=33062 It seems to me that it would, but only if what I want is micro B (which I assume it is since that's what my OEM USB cable is. I already ordered it, so if no one knows I will in about a week. To cover all my bases I also ordered the simple female to female coupler from the same site ($2.50), but I'm hoping the adapter will work. I'm looking to use this with a variety of things -- keyboards, card readers, memory sticks, even USB hard drives. Sorry if this was covered somewhere else. I haven't been able to find it. |

Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
This works without needing usb control, and I like the cable version better than the big plug version:

So far I've tried and successfully used: 1. USB hard drive (external power). 2. 4GB memory stick 3. 8GB SDHC card in a card reader 4. nMediaPC wireless RF keyboard/mouse (the mouse doesn't work, of course, but the keyboard works great!) 5. Panasonic FZ50 digital camera Once my teenager returns home with the car, I'll pull the GPS tracker out of it and try it in USB mode (like a GPS mouse) to see if I can get a faster link on an external GPS. Anyway, it works if you want to go that route. It's kinda nice having it just be a plug, but I could also see how a short corded dongle would be nice, too. -- Chris |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Hey guys --- just upgraded from the N800 to an N810. So, I'm a bit confused on the usb host mode and wiring and all for micro usb. On the N800, I always used the app to switch to host mode... am I understanding that with some cables/ adapters, this happens automatically? I don't mind getting an adapter and switching the N810 to host mode.
Thoughts on this topic are appreciated. |
Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
With a standard cable/adaptator, you need to switch manually, with an "OTG" cable, you just need to plug, and the N810 will switch automatically. At least that what I understood. Go to ebay, and look for "N810 OTG" One Chinese dealer sells a specific cable for 8USD, including shipping. Many people here bought it, and it looks to work flawlessly.

Re: Micro male to type A female? (USB plugs)
Perfect! That makes sense. I will probably go for the ultra small adapter that was on here a few posts back... either than or a micro to mini! Thank you! :)

USB A Female - USB micro
This searched on ebay works wonders. You can find direct adapters which are more convenient than regular cables ;) |
