3G on N800
in the future is there a chance that instead of Wi-fi hotspots, there'll be 3G hotspots?
and in more current news, Will 802.11N replace the dominance of G? i've seen a lotta new lappys with N support - or WiMAX perhaps? i think there should be a mass movement within this forum, for someone SOMEBODY to develop a USB-in connector - either via external device, or something - that will allow us to do somethings like adding 3G Wireless adapters (if that becomes standard) ,and adding Wireless-N or wimax support (also, if that becomes standard) seriously though, USB in would open SO many new doors. USB host, and video out may actually become a reality if someone perfects this theoretical USB in device. |

802.11n is the next revision up from 802.11g, so yes, N will replace G in time just as G replaced 802.11b. The key is interoperability (i.e. why 802.11a failed to gain much traction at all as it was not interoperable with other standards as it operated at 5.8 Ghz instead of 2.4 Ghz). It's hardly a new thing. Old modem technologies always eventually superseded previous standards, and it took years for 802.11g to supplant 802.11b (I was running a B network back in ... 1999?). WiMAX will see only limited support at the integrated hardware level as it is reliant on a carrier/provider/ISP of some sort to give you WiMAX service. I would never buy a laptop that required me to sign up with Company XYZ's WiMAX service to utilize hardware someone felt like shoving in my laptop. It has it's uses in devices like the OQO, but you don't see those flying off store shelves. Demand isn't there for such an expensive, locked in product. I don't even know if I'd want WiMAX as my at home internet service. The need for a USB interface to connect to an adapter to connect to another service is a bit redundant. If you already carry a 3G cell phone, both devices are already fully equipped and capable of connecting over Bluetooth. Yes, eventually Bluetooth will become the bottleneck (if it isn't already) and we'll crave something faster, but by then these devices will have evolved well past their current iteration and likely have all of those things you want. |

Would be nice for me when I'm on the go and not to purchase another phone as mine is just fine without bluetooth. I'm sure in the future all phones will be equipped with bluetooth or something faster but for now id like to see if this would work with the n800 i'm purchasing soon! |

Re: 3G on N800
I recently tethered my HTC Mogul (Sprint) to my N800 through WiFi. There is a way to hack the Mogul so that it acts as a router and accepts incoming connections from multiple sources, bridges them to the EVDO-Rev A radio and out to the internet. It's just an ad hoc Wifi connection just like Bluetooth, but obviously it's not Bluetooth.
Google "WMWifirouter" or "Windows Mobile Wifi Router" which works on a few different types of WM phones. I was actually able to put the Mogul in my work bag, connection the N800 to it with Wifi, and stream Internet radio while driving at 60 MPH on a bus. Not one single hiccup. |

I would have used Bluetooth, but the DUN profiles are stripped out of the Mogul by Sprint, so Wifi was the easiest choice. With the Sprint SERO plan, I basically have a portable 500-800 kbps (constant bit rate per DSLReports.com speed test) router with me at all times for only $30/month (comes with unlimited text and 500 mins as well). Once the EVDO Rev A upgrades are complete it should be over 1 mbps. Can't beat that unless you stay home all day. |

To the OP: In theory, using USB OTG mode on the iT, you could hook up an external radio device such as a WiMax receiver or an EVDO modem (if one exists) via USB, but you'd still need drivers to make it work |

Re: 3G on N800
Can someone please inform me as to what 3G-capable handset on the market doesn't have Bluetooth? I'm not trying to be daft, but I seriously can't think of a 3G handset that doesn't have Bluetooth.

Re: 3G on N800
Fact is, MOST of them have. I cannot recall any 3G-enabled handset that doesn't have BT, and seeing that I'm not totally familiar with handset models in the USA, I didn't want to come to any conclusions about whether the phones you guys have there even come with BT.
In EMEA and Asia, most 3G phones come equipped with BT as well. |
Re: 3G on N800
or if you cannot get your USB 3G (either HSDPA or EVDO) modem to work with your N8x0 then consider a Cradlepoint PHS300 ( http://www.cradlepoint.com/ ) with a USB EVDO modem.
There is another thread in the Newbies section about this or at least it was steered that way... http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=10770 Actually I no longer need a cell at all. Well, I keep a throw-away with an unactivated prepaid card around just in case everything else takes a dump. Otherwise I use Skype everywhere thanks to the Mobile Broadband data plan (in my case EVDO) I have with Millenicom (http://www.millenicom.com). One of my desires of from the N8x0, if I decide that is the device, is to use that service and the CDU680 EVDO USB modem I have. If I cannot get it to work with the tablet directly then I might consider using that Cradlepoint router. Google a bit and it will make sense. The router supports EVDO USB modems and acts as a Wifi Hotspot. So you can connect to the router using the tablet's wifi and viola instant 3G MBB connection to the web no overpriced and redundant cell phone needed. Plus with the router option I can be using one device and my better half can be using another and we can share the connection while we sit and have coffee somewhere or even are sitting under a tree in the park. See that router also has a Li-ION battery. Kinda cool... I am not sure there are pocket/travel routers for HSDPA but I would imagine there must be some by now. And for the near future forget WiMax unless you live in a beta test area. And how useful is that for a "mobile" service? 3-years and we'll see something faster like WiMax... |
