Why is it when waiting for UPS they NEVER show up.

I am sitting here panting for my new N800 and while UPS almost always makes their first run through my neighborhood about 10:30am...NOTHING...heck even the normal amount of street traffic is dead.

It's a stinking conspiracy. I might need to get my tin foil hat to help stop the spy satellites from watching me.

I do know the thing is here and should be out for delivery even though the UPS site only shows an arrival scan at our distributation center. So, it will show up today...with my luck it will be the LAST STOP of the day for the driver...

D'OH!! I wanna fiddle with my new toy!! I even made a check list of how to get everything working. Found all the info around here...

Hey, at least be thankful that they normally deliver so early! They don't usually deliver here until between 7:00pm and 9:00pm.

I'm waiting too. Sitting, and waiting. Any minute now. Crap, hope it comes tonight even.

FedEx is worse.

I swear the last 3 places I lived at, the FedEx tracking site would show my package was out for delivery at 6AM, but wouldn't actually be at my house until after 5PM sometimes 7PM. Does the guy take 10+ hours to empty out his truck of packages?

And at one place (St. Petersburg, Florida), despite me putting a sign on my door asking them to knock as I was home, being at home all day waiting, looking out the window every ~5 minutes, they often said that the package wasn't deliverable and they would attempt redelivery the next day! I worked a graveyard shift and I would stay up all day watching the window and the FedEx tracking site just to find out it would be delivered the next day ... after 5PM of course.

I thought they were so fast the snow doesn't melt when they do a Miami delivery.

Yeah, FedEx shipping here. I also live in Florida. Say they left for delivery this morning at 7:00 this morning. I wish they had REAL TIME tracking.

I had that happen to me waiting for my G5. Took the day off to take delivery, waited all day and finally the FedEx truck pulled up at 7:05PM, guy stopped for about 30 seconds and drove away. Checked the website and it was marked as "Owner not home". What a joke! Customer support didn't care a lick.

Re: Why is it when waiting for UPS they NEVER show up.

I waited all day for my N800 to be delivered on January 7th. Now I have another SDHC (16GB!) scheduled to be delivered on Thursday (my "new" 8GB died after 1 month, 2 days).

As I get off work at 4PM, at least I know that the card won't be sitting in front of my door (or stolen) when I get home.

I bet they mainly do all their business deliveries during the morning\afternoon and their residential deliveries later when more people will be home waiting.

It's semi-random here from all private carriers but they usually deliver after 5 pm. Whatever you do, don't watch the tracking-- you will go nuts watching the package go places that make no sense. I like watching my package come to one bulk DC near my house, then go 30+ miles east to a Dallas DC, then back again. Stupid UPS logistics.

When I was a kid the US mail always arrived at our house before noon-- usually by 10:30 am. Now I'm lucky to get it before 4 PM. But hey: they keep that one mail truck busy!

Funny ya say that because yesterday my mail pickup/delivery (same truck) came at 9:30Am instead of the normal 3PM-4:30PM. Needless to say i had to take my shipements to the PO myself as I was not even out of the shower yet...

The reason it's that the drivers get paid by number of trips they do. If they have to go twice, they get paid twice ;-) And they will stop in front of your house to allow the GPS system to detect the stop.

Watch it be like one of those "Bad batches" from amazon or something that goes bonkers on first boot and starts an infinite loop of boot up and restarts. Then you have to send it back and wait two weeks for the new one or order a new one and wait for the return to be credited to your account.

Oh that's just cruel. However, I'm pleased to say mine's working beautifully :)

I think they should start putting reusable GPS-devices on the packages (at a small fee, of course). That way you could see were your package REALLY is. That would be a big step up from the current system. They could make it so that they're like a little nodes that attach to the package, then when they deliver it to you, they just detach it perhaps and use it for another package, kind of like they do with those plastic security tags that are on the new clothing in department stores.

Even an additional cost of a few cents per package would work out to huge numbers for the kinds of scales that UPS or FedEx deals with. This certainly wont be just a few cents, either. For a device that'll get a decent GPS signal inside of a package in a big metal truck, be able to upload its fix to an onboard or remote computer, and last for at least 5 days . . . you're talking big bucks.

Much more feasible would be to simply interface with the truck's GPS.

Well UPS, for example, delivers about 15 million packages a day world-wide. So worst case they would have to have 15 million GPS-trackers. I'm sure they would start out with a lot less while introducing it, say about 500,000 or so. If each device cost them, say, $30 to make that would cost them about $15 million. If they charged $2 to have a GPS on your package, it would only take them 2 weeks to recover their costs, then anything beyond that would be profit.

I agree with your last statement, it would be smart to have the GPS combined with the regular tracking number online, so that when they put it on a truck or plane, where there may not be GPS, that it would additionally give you the location of the truck or plane.

Indeed. It wasn't long ago that UPS made the news for trying to eliminate left turns to save money. On their scale, small costs add up to large figures.

The answer is simple. They deliver large packages first that are at the front of the truck. The smaller packages always get delivered last.

You're kidding, right? Aside from actively plotting the most inefficient course possible, this is about as inefficient as it gets. Aside from the fact that the driver can access the truck easily from both ends, the packages are arranged on shelves either side, so size doesn't really factor in to access.

Assuming a randomized distribution of small and large packages, a delivery route based on size would send the driver all over town and back again. No, the delivery routes are setup to be as efficient as possible—each package being delivered in an ordered designed to minimize driving time and distance as much as possible, regardless of package size.

I was just gonna make a similar thread post. UPS is so full of it. I ordered my n810 with overnight priority am delivery, my package has been in Rockford, IL for the last 2 days. Of course when i'm waiting, they have water delays and the such. How long does that last? Does my delivery have to be on standstill for another entire day. How bad is this "water" delay? My sister is a dispatcher for another company and called them. She said they had no reason why my package was delayed in the first place. I thought they were gonna ship fed ex (usually happens when i ask for priority delivery). Don't they understand the difference between the two companies. UPS brown trucks represents how much "tihs" they are worth.

Re: Why is it when waiting for UPS they NEVER show up.

Well... it sometimes works other way around: I'm expecting my N810 to arrive via USPS, and they actually did try to deliver today when I wasn't at home expecting it. It was sent with signature required and I have to wait until tomorrow to pick it up from the post office.

The good news is that the post office is only quarter mile away from me, and I know I'm going to get it tomorrow! :D
