Is the upcoming update just software?

Hi all

I'm considering getting a 770  but have read that there is likely to be an update in Q1 (or Q2). Is this update just software related? If it is, then is there any reason to wait for it before purchasing?

thanks

Simon 2006-03-22 21:15

I think as far as anyone knows it is just software. The 2006 version of the OS which should hopefully have VOIP support. I haven't seen any mention of new hardware and I think there is a lot of improvement that can be made with the software on the current device as it is. With the running OS files on the memory card and swap file hacks the machine runs quite well as it is. I'd say get one now!

Agreeing with Simon here...

It's extremely unlikely that they'd send out new hardware to the thousands of users there already are. The 2006 update will be just software...
On the other hand - it's always likely there will be a new version out in the future, with both better hardware and better software...
But since we don't know anything about the latter, I'd agree: get it now! ;-)

They are still working really hard on the software and it would make no sense to developp a new hardware so soon.

IMHO, the sooner a new hardware version can hit the market is Q3 2007. That would say announcing it in Q1 2007.

And, honnestly, I don't believe it is needed. A lot can be done with the current hardware.

ploum: agreed.

thanks all...

now all I need to do is wait for them to come to Canada, or go for a drive!

Canada, that's easy! Try living in NZ. I had to get a friend in the states to get me one and send it down :) I am hoping in the 2006 software they include at least one New Zealand city in the clock so I can set the correct damn time on the thing!

ploum 2006-03-26 21:55

I hope it will support NTP sync ;-)

ploum 2006-03-26 21:58

speaking of the 2006OS, do you think we will have to wait december like for the 2005 one ? Or will they release sooner ?

aflegg 2006-03-27 08:21

At launch, the talk was of Q1 2006. But given that ends in about 3 days and that doesn't seem to have been mentioned recently, I'd guess it may not be as soon as we'd like :-/

Andyke 2006-03-29 09:50

As far as I can remember Q1 will end on April 30th

aflegg 2006-03-29 09:53

12 / 4 = 3 months per quarter;

=> 31st March is end of Q1. 1st April is start of Q2.

ploum 2006-03-29 10:37

Seems to be August : http://maemo.org/pipermail/maemo-dev...ch/003431.html

That could very well be a seperate app. to be released after the OS is online. Of course, if the new OS adds alarm capacity, third party sofware will probably beat it to the line.

Anyway I almost feel let down by Nokia because the device needs massive improvements in stability and memory usage. Whenever my wife loads CNN or People.com the device pretty much locks up at 100% cpu and then either has to have the battery pulled or it reboots itself.

Sorry for the rant, just frustrated.

What firmware are you running? I just loaded both pages with out having to pull the battery. CNN made me nervious, but it was good within 60 seconds. Both pages did spike the cpu, but they didnt' cause any problems besides that.

mrp 2006-04-13 20:30

checking CNN and People

loading CNN and People 95% OK by 770 in Finland. Some sluggishness in opening that abundance of graphical links in P. though. (root extended to mmc along with swap file on mmc)

dandrewk 2006-04-13 21:18

I too have extended swap to mmc, but it did nothing for the occasional freezes.

My hunch is that it is not a memory problem, but a video one. The 770 video processor has trouble keeping up with a flood of graphics/flash in some web sites. I never have any trouble on sites with little graphics.

I hope the new release addressed this issue. It can be a real pain to have to reboot all the time.

Hedgecore 2006-04-13 22:13

I'm not forced into reboots while loading CNN (sometimes convulsions at the rightwing slant/exclusion of things like Bush's plan to bomb Al Jazeera offices) but it's slow. That page is a pig, look at how much data is being sent. Christ, I bet it was made in Frontpage.

lightusr 2006-04-14 04:12

The reboots aren't even consistent. Sometimes they happen after a bunch of other page loads or immediately. I chose not to put swap on my 1gb mmc because I didn't want to put excess wear on it and you shouldn't have to in the first place.

Not an app as such, but just a piece of the software platform - a little stepping stone in the Maemo 2.0 roadmap (and 2.0 is not the same as 2006 OS). So it really has little relevance to how well Nokia is keeping the bigger schedule.
